Introduction

I spent a month pretending to be a coward in a mercenary cannon-fodder camp.

A recruit shattered my nose with a punch and ground his combat boot into my face; the instructor cut off my water during drills in forty-degree heat, waiting for me to drop dead from dehydration. To prevent the military AI surveillance overhead from catching my tactical muscle memory, I forcibly locked down my combat instincts and swallowed blood mixed with dirt.

They thought I was just a sluggish forty-two-year-old drifter, unaware that in the Pentagon's top-secret sealed files, I am a former Joint Special Operations Command "Tier 0" Ghost Operative.

Until that day, when heavily armored mercenaries raided the camp, and an EMP grenade paralyzed the entire surveillance grid.

Staring at the extinguished infrared indicator lights above, I snapped an enemy's neck and picked up a rifle from the ground.

"Alright, restrictions lifted."

Chapter 1

——

On the Middle Eastern border, I sat at the edge of a mud pit, back against a crooked wooden post, legs submerged in the muddy water. My old knee injury throbbed a dull ache in the scorching heat, a souvenir from the Hindu Kush mountains ten years ago. I stared down at my reflection—scraggly stubble, puffy eyebags, dried mud caked on my cheekbones, and a crooked bulge on my nasal bridge, the unswollen aftermath of being smashed broken just yesterday. Forty-two, looking fifty-two. Exactly how a drifter should look. But if someone dug to the very bottom page of the Pentagon's archives, they would find a completely different name: Ivan Petrov. Former Joint Special Operations Command Tier 0 Ghost Operative, traitor, with a thirty-seven-million-dollar bounty and a global arrest warrant covering seventy-three countries.

Black Steel's selection camp had no background checks, at least not the legitimate kind. "Vetting" here simply meant confirming you had paid the deposit in full and checking if your arrest warrant was valid in at least three countries. All around me were desperados with no way out—Syrian deserters, Somali pirates, Eastern European human traffickers, and men like me who carried our lives on our shoulders. This was the perfect blind spot to hide from the military's dragnet. No one would give a second glance to a worthless drunk named Ray, and certainly no one would connect an old man who choked on his own drinking water with a Ghost Operative.

But that didn't mean it was safe.

The instructor, an ex-SEAL known as "Butcher," stood on the raised platform, his combat boots rhythmically tapping against the iron railing. He clenched a thumb-thick cigar in his teeth, its smoke shredded by the heatwaves and carried toward the dunes. He wasn't tall, but his frame was as broad as a door. Both arms were covered in tattoos, and his exposed skin was a crisscross of blade scars and bullet wounds. His gaze swept slowly over the two dozen recruits by the mud pit. It was a look I had seen far too many times—he was selecting a sacrifice. It would be a slaughter to make an example, a theatrical display to establish absolute dominance over this fresh batch of meat.

I felt his line of sight pause on me for half a beat. I was too old, my entire body as slack as soggy noodles. My hands rested on my knees, trembling slightly, my gaze unfocused. A natural pushover.

Viper clearly thought the same. The heavily tattooed man stepped out from the crowd, rolling his neck from side to side with a loud cracking of joints. A striking cobra was inked across his chest, its dark blue-black lines gleaming under a sheen of sweat. His muscles weren't the useless bulk built in a gym; they were dense mass forged in street brawls, every inch screaming the word "violence." He stopped in front of me, his towering shadow completely enveloping me.

"Stand up, old bones."

I didn't move. I glanced up at him, my eyes dazed and glassy, a trail of un wiped muddy water hanging from the corner of my mouth. The crowd around us started jeering. Some whistled; others clapped. Viper's mouth twitched into a sneer of pure contempt—disgusted that I lacked even the nerve to stand.

His right fist suddenly tore through the air, howling as it barreled straight for my face. Sloppy footwork, center of gravity pitched too far forward, core entirely exposed. The punch was fast, but stupid.

0.1 seconds. Time slowed in my field of vision. In the instant the neural signals arrived, my cerebral cortex completed holographic calculations for five counterattack routes: step in at a forty-five-degree angle and snap his ulna; drop low for a sweeping kick to shatter his patella; strike the larynx with the heel of my palm; shoulder-check to break his balance followed by an elbow to the temple; or simply dislocate the shoulder joint to cripple the entire arm. Any one of these would turn this street brawler into a twitching corpse within half a second. The nerve impulses transmitted to my fingertips; my muscles were primed and ready to contract.

0.3 seconds. My peripheral vision swept the tactical steel towers at the four corners of the camp. Those four black hemispherical cameras were blinking with faint red lights—the Pentagon's AI behavioral analysis system. Networked and active, they were running high-speed comparisons against every tactical movement signature in the global special operations database. My kinesiology, muscle memory, center of gravity shifts, breathing rate—if even one of these was captured, a drone armed with Hellfire missiles would turn this stretch of desert into glass within fifteen minutes.

The killing intent froze to ice at the bottom of my eyes. I pushed it down, down into my stomach, deep into my spinal cord.

0.5 seconds. I forcibly severed all defensive mechanisms. My tensed core muscles instantly relaxed, the drawn bowstring collapsing into a puddle of mud. No dodging, no blocking, no counterattacking.

Crack!

A muffled sound of bone cracking exploded over the mud pit. Viper's fist smashed solidly into the bridge of my nose. Agony surged through my facial nerves like a high-voltage current. The crunch of shattering cartilage was audible through my own skull. Warm liquid instantly flooded my nasal cavity and throat, salty and metallic. I let the momentum carry me backward, limbs splayed out, crashing heavily into the muddy water. Splashing mud pasted my eyes shut. The foul stench of sludge filled my mouth and nose as my body sank in, like a corpse completely drained of life.

Piercing laughter erupted all around. People were stomping their feet, shouting curses, and exaggeratedly mimicking the way I had fallen. This was exactly what they wanted to see—a piece of trash knocked flat on his back, like a dead dog.

Up on the platform, Butcher exhaled a cloud of cigar smoke and retracted his gaze in satisfaction. He turned and walked down the iron scaffolding, his combat boots thumping against the steps, rapping the railing twice to signal that the show was over.

A mud-caked combat boot stepped onto the side of my face. The tread of the sole dug deeply into the skin over my cheekbone. Viper ground my head down from above, the toe of his boot twisting against my broken nasal bridge, forcing more muddy water and blood into my ear. He threw his weight onto it, my skull groaning and clicking under the pressure.

"That all you got? Trash. Don't even have the balls to fight back?"

I lay facedown in the mud like a dead dog, eyelids drooping. Blood drained backward into my throat. My Adam's apple bobbed once—I swallowed that mouthful of blood and grit down into my stomach. My fingers sank into the sludge without a single tremor. Humiliation and pain spread through my body, but I endured it expressionlessly, like a stone being trampled into a riverbed.

The red lights on the towers blinked steadily. The behavioral analysis system had classified me as zero threat—lacking any tactical proficiency, extremely poor physical conditioning, and possessing no counterattack instincts when assaulted. The data was recorded, archived, and flagged as "Low Risk," before the system shifted to its next target.

Phase one, cleared.

I thought I was waiting for love. Instead, I got fucked by a beast.

My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.

But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.

In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.

"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.

"Who the fuck is Jason?"

My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.

I ran away for my life!

But weeks later, I woke up pregnant with his heir!

They say my heterochromatic eyes mark me as a rare true mate. But I’m no wolf. I’m just Elle, a nobody from the human district, now trapped in Brad's world.

Brad’s cold gaze pins me: “You carry my blood. You’re mine.”

There is no other choice for me but to chose this cage. My body also betrays me, craving the beast who ruined me.

"Big Kai?"

He didn't respond but moved his eyes around the room, scanning the place.

"Wha...what are you doing here?"

His icy blue eyes returned to me, sending shivers down my spine. Then further dropped to my dress and then back to my eyes.

"The shit going on downstairs, what does it mean?" he asked, making my legs as weak as they are eager to flee.

"It's....it my wedding,"

He scoffed darkly. "Excuse me?"

I swallowed. "I am......getting married,"

He let out a humorless laugh, looking away and giving me lesser comfort. He looked at me with a demonic frown.

Terror washed me.

He reached for the back of my head and pulled me up just enough to reach my neck. When his fangs slid into me, the pain was instant, electric. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. My hands found his shoulders, clawing for something to hold. My legs kicked. Tears streamed down my cheeks.

He moaned against my throat as he drank, and the sound was devastating.
