Introduction

I was supposed to con the billionaire. Instead, he caught me—and made me his.

Sienna Sinclair has one final job before she can disappear for good: infiltrate Blackwell Logistics, become billionaire CEO Kade Blackwell's trusted personal assistant, and steal the Meridian Protocol File before anyone notices she was ever there. Playing the perfect assistant should be easy—until Kade catches her in the act and gives her an impossible choice: go to prison, or become his fake fiancée for the next three months.

He's cold, guarded, and clearly hiding secrets of his own, but Kade sees far more than she'd like. And the longer Sienna spends wearing Aurora Jett's name, the harder it becomes to remember which parts of herself are real. Then the break-ins start, followed by threats she can't trace, and a conspiracy that ties the Meridian Protocol File to the accident that killed her parents nine years ago—proof that this job was never as simple as Helen claimed.

Kade's uncle Magnus wants Blackwell Logistics for himself, and Sienna is caught in the middle with nothing to protect her but a lie, a ring, and secrets that could get them both killed. But the deeper she digs, the more dangerous the truth becomes. The people behind the conspiracy are closer than she realizes, and escaping her old life may no longer be enough to keep her alive. Every step closer to Kade makes deception harder to maintain. Every clue pulls her deeper into a past she thought was buried forever, while trusting him may become her only chance of surviving the truth.

Because Kade was supposed to be her last con—now he might be the only man she'd risk everything to save.

Chapter 1

Sienna Sinclair smiled across the polished desk and watched Mr. Bellamy slowly arrive at the decision she had wanted him to make.

Afternoon sunlight poured through the tall windows of his office, turning the glass walls of the building opposite them into sheets of pale gold. Somewhere beyond the closed door, a printer whirred and stopped, followed by the muffled rhythm of footsteps along the corridor. The room smelled faintly of coffee and polished wood, the kind of expensive office where everything had its place and nobody was supposed to make mistakes.

Sienna had made none.

She sat with her back straight and her hands resting loosely over the leather folder in front of her, wearing the composed expression of Natalie Reed, the investment analyst she had spent three weeks creating.

Mr. Bellamy had spent the last fifteen minutes explaining why the financial records she wanted were confidential, and Sienna had listened without interrupting. She had noticed only what mattered: the way his thumb moved over his wedding ring whenever he became uncomfortable and the repeated glances toward the office door whenever he considered refusing her.

He didn't like breaking rules, but he liked appearing unhelpful even less.

“I completely understand your concern,” she said, allowing a hint of disappointment into her voice. “The last thing I want is to put you in a difficult position.”

Bellamy's shoulders relaxed.

His gaze dropped to the folder.

Then he sighed.

“The Holland Imports records aren't normally handled by my department.”

“Then perhaps I should speak to someone else.”

Sienna reached calmly for her handbag.

Bellamy's hand lifted.

“No, that's not necessary.”

She stopped and looked at him.

He hesitated before glancing toward the filing cabinets behind him.

“I can let you review the older records, but some of them haven't been properly indexed.”

“That would be very helpful.”

Her smile was warm enough to make him feel generous without making him wonder why she wanted the records so badly.

Bellamy picked up the telephone.

A few minutes later, his secretary entered carrying a thick folder. She placed it on the desk and left without a word.

Sienna waited until the door closed before drawing the folder toward her.

The paper inside carried the faint, dry smell of old files, and several pages had softened slightly at the edges from years of handling. She turned through them at an unhurried pace, occasionally making a note in the pad beside her.

The records concerned Holland Imports, just as she had been told. Invoices, transfers, supplier payments, correspondence, names and figures filled the pages, and she studied each one with the detached concentration expected of someone conducting a routine financial assessment.

Then she noticed a transaction that didn't fit.

A supplier had received a substantial payment, then transferred almost the same amount to another company less than forty-eight hours later.

Sienna made a note and continued.

Two pages later, she found the same pattern again.

She kept her expression neutral while her mind followed the numbers.

There was something underneath the paperwork.

She couldn't pursue it beyond the mission, not yet.

This was her fourth job for Helen, and perhaps that was why the familiar satisfaction of getting close to information no longer felt the way it once had. She had become good at stepping into places where she didn't belong, learning the history of women who didn't exist and making strangers trust her enough to hand over information they would normally protect.

The skill had once made her feel powerful.

Now it mostly made her tired.

Sienna wanted her own name again.

She wanted to wake without checking her phone for Helen's messages. She wanted to walk into an acting audition carrying a script with Sienna Sinclair printed across the top instead of wondering which identity she should use. After graduation, perhaps she could finally build a life that didn't require another name every time she walked through a door.

The thought warmed something inside her.

She turned another page and forced herself back to the work.

By the time she had gathered everything she needed, the sunlight outside had begun to fade.

Bellamy looked up from his computer.

“Did you find everything?”

Sienna closed the folder with a satisfied smile.

“Yes. I think I have enough.”

He nodded.

“Good.”

“Thank you for your help, Mr. Bellamy.”

She collected her handbag and the folder, then walked out of the office.

Only when the elevator doors closed behind her did she allow the carefully constructed smile to disappear.

She leaned lightly against the wall and watched the numbers above the doors descend toward the lobby.

One mission left.

Then she was done.

At least, that was what she had been telling herself.

---

The hotel room was cool when Sienna returned.

She locked the door, slipped off her shoes and placed her handbag on the small desk beside the window. The curtains were half drawn, allowing the last gray light of evening to spill across the carpet.

She should have showered and packed.

Instead, she stood looking at the folder she had brought back with her.

Something about the records bothered her.

Perhaps it was the pattern in the transfers. Perhaps it was the gaps between them. After years of relying on instinct, Sienna had learned not to dismiss the feeling that something was wrong simply because she couldn't explain it.

She sat at the desk and opened the folder again.

The muted hum of the air conditioner filled the room as she turned through the pages more carefully. One transaction led to another, one company appeared beside another, and a few handwritten notes had been added to older documents in faded blue ink.

Then she found an audit.

Her eyes moved over the entry.

She stopped.

Phillip Sinclair.

Her father's name.

For several seconds, Sienna simply stared at the words.

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the paper as she leaned closer, reading the name again.

Phillip Sinclair.

There was no mistaking it.

For nine years, she had trained herself not to linger on memories of him because memories had a way of opening wounds she had no idea how to close. Yet the moment she saw his name, one rose without permission.

His hands on the steering wheel.

The faint scent of his aftershave when he hugged her.

The sound of his laugh when she had insisted, at twelve, that she was going to become a famous actress.

The warmth of his palm resting on her head.

Then the memory broke apart into headlights, rain, metal and darkness.

Sienna blinked hard and looked down at the document.

The audit was dated months before the accident.

She read the entry again.

Phillip had reviewed financial activity connected to Holland Imports. There were references to irregular transfers and related entities, but the document didn't explain what he had discovered.

Her pulse quickened.

Why had her father been investigating Holland Imports?

She turned the page.

Nothing.

She went back.

There were more references to the audit, but no conclusion. Only dates, company names, figures and handwritten notes that stopped just when they seemed about to become meaningful.

She searched the surrounding pages.

Still nothing.

Sienna sat back slowly.

For the first time since entering Bellamy's office, the mission itself no longer mattered.

Her father did.

She looked at the name again.

Phillip Sinclair.

Nine years of silence had reduced him to memories she carried carefully, touching them only when she was brave enough. Now his name had appeared in a file she had opened for an entirely different reason.

It couldn't be coincidence.

Or at least, she couldn't convince herself that it was.

She reached for her private phone and positioned the page beneath the desk lamp. The camera focused, and she captured the audit reference along with the information beside it. She checked the image, then took another for clarity.

When she was satisfied, she transferred the photographs to an encrypted account Helen didn't know existed.

Her finger hovered over the screen.

This wasn't part of the mission.

She knew that.

Still, she created a folder and placed the images inside.

Then she locked the account.

For the first time, Sienna had deliberately kept something from Helen.

A strange heaviness settled in her chest.

She closed the laptop and sat back, staring at the darkened window.

She didn't know what her father had found, or why his work had been buried inside those records. She didn't know whether Holland Imports had anything to do with what happened to him.

But she knew she wasn't ready to hand this piece of him over to anyone.

Not yet.

Her phone vibrated.

Helen.

Sienna stared at the screen for a moment before answering.

“I'm done.”

“Good.”

Helen's voice carried its usual warmth, the kind that could sound comforting until Sienna remembered how much of her life had been shaped by that voice.

“Did you get everything?”

Sienna glanced toward the closed laptop.

“Yes.”

Helen discussed the mission and arranged for the documents to be delivered. Sienna answered when necessary, keeping her voice even and giving nothing away about the audit she had secretly copied.

When the call ended, she remained seated for another moment.

She looked at the laptop.

Then at the private phone.

Phillip Sinclair.

The name seemed to echo in the silence.

Tomorrow, she would decide what to do about her father's name.

Tonight, she needed to leave.

---

By the time Sienna reached the airport, the sun had begun its descent, painting the sky above Miami in pale gold and soft coral.

Inside the terminal, the air was cooler, and the constant movement of travelers filled the space with the rattle of suitcase wheels and overlapping announcements. Somewhere near the check-in counters, a child complained loudly about having to surrender a toy while the smell of roasted coffee drifted from a nearby kiosk.

Sienna moved through the crowd without hurrying.

She had become very good at looking as though she belonged wherever she happened to be. Today she was Natalie Reed, a corporate compliance specialist finishing a business trip. Her clothes were conservative, her movements measured and her expression appropriately unremarkable.

Nothing about her invited a second glance.

At the gate, she settled into a seat and watched the aircraft waiting beyond the glass.

She should have been thinking about the mission.

Instead, her thoughts drifted to next week.

Her final year of college.

After that, graduation.

Perhaps auditions and acting.

Her own life.

For years, she had learned how to become other women so convincingly that sometimes even she forgot which parts of them had never belonged to her. Natalie Reed had a voice, a history, a wardrobe and a carefully constructed past.

None of them were truly hers.

Acting was different.

That was something she wanted.

She wanted to walk into an audition carrying a script with Sienna Sinclair written across the top of the page. She wanted to hear her own name called in a room where she wasn't pretending to be anyone else.

One more year of college.

Then she would see what came next.

The boarding announcement sounded overhead.

Sienna rose and joined the line.

---

The flight was almost full.

She found her row and paused while the passenger already seated by the window shifted his legs aside to let her through. He had a book open in one hand and was looking out at the runway, where the last of the evening light reflected across the glass.

“Excuse me.”

“Of course.”

His voice was low and calm.

Sienna slipped into the aisle seat beside him, placed her handbag beneath the seat in front of her and secured her carry-on in the overhead compartment before settling back.

The stranger turned toward the window again.

She barely looked at him.

Her mind was still on the hotel room.

Phillip Sinclair.

The name had followed her all the way to the airport.

Around them, the cabin filled with the familiar sounds of a flight preparing for departure. Overhead compartments slammed shut as the last passengers hurried to settle in, while a flight attendant moved down the aisle checking seat belts and reminding someone to stow a bag.

Sienna adjusted her handbag against her side and glanced toward the window.

Miami was beginning to glitter beneath the darkening sky.

For the first time all day, she allowed herself to relax.

A few minutes later, she remembered the sleep mask tucked into her carry-on. She had planned to use it once the plane reached cruising altitude, but with the cabin lights still bright, she decided to retrieve it.

She stood and reached into the overhead compartment.

The stranger shifted slightly to give her room.

Sienna pulled the bag down carefully and placed it on her lap before unzipping it. The sleep mask was buried beneath her notebook and a small cosmetic pouch.

She reached deeper.

At that exact moment, someone hurried along the aisle behind her.

A shoulder struck the edge of her seat.

The impact was unexpected.

Sienna's hand jerked, and the open bag tipped sideways. Her notebook landed on the floor, the cosmetic pouch rolled toward the aisle and the sleep mask slipped free beside her shoe.

Two identification cards slid from an inner compartment.

Sienna's stomach tightened.

She reached for them immediately.

So did the man beside her.

He picked up one card before it disappeared beneath the seat in front. His eyes fell briefly to the photograph and name before he handed it to her.

“Thank you.”

He gave a small nod.

Then he retrieved the second card and passed it over.

Sienna slipped both into the deepest pocket of her handbag.

The stranger gathered her notebook and held it out.

She accepted it.

“Sorry about that.”

“You weren't the one in a hurry.”

There was quiet amusement in his voice.

Sienna glanced toward the aisle. The passenger who had knocked into her was already several rows ahead, apparently unaware of the small disruption he had caused.

She turned back to the stranger and managed a faint smile.

“Thank you.”

“You're welcome.”

His gaze lingered on her for a moment before he returned his attention to the window.

Sienna gathered the remaining items, checked the inside of her bag and pulled the zipper firmly closed. Her pulse was settling again, but she kept one hand over the handbag as she placed it beneath the seat.

The engines deepened beneath the floor as the aircraft began moving toward the runway.

She turned toward the window.

Runway lights stretched into glowing lines against the darkness, and Miami shimmered beyond the glass, beautiful and distant.

Her thoughts returned to college, to graduation and to the possibility of finally living as Sienna Sinclair.

Yet beneath those thoughts remained the qu

estion that had followed her from the hotel.

Phillip Sinclair.

Her father's name.

She closed her eyes as the aircraft gathered speed.

She had no idea that the quiet stranger beside her would soon become far more than a nameless passenger from a flight home.

And she certainly didn't know that, one year from now, the life she was dreaming about would look nothing like the one waiting for her.
