Too Busy Hiding to Notice He Loved Me
Hachimitsu · Ongoing · 11.2k Words
Introduction
She called him, and he rushed to the hospital. When he saw me, he hesitated for a moment.
He stayed with her while I had my tests. Afterward, he asked, “How much did you have to pay?”
“A hundred and ten.”
A notification appeared on my phone a moment later.
Husband sent you $150.
I stared at the screen. We'd kept our marriage secret for three years, and even when I miscarried, he hadn't come to see me in the hospital. He'd hired someone to look after me and left a message.
I'm away on business for a week. Get some rest. Ask the aide if you need anything.
This was the first time he'd ever stayed with me for a medical appointment.
A nurse came over. “Your chart says you're married. Have your husband help you at home. With that leg, getting around is going to be difficult.”
I came back to myself and turned off my screen.
“That would be a little awkward. We're getting divorced.”
Chapter 1
The woman Evan Cole had never gotten over hit me with her car.
She called him, and he rushed to the hospital. When he saw me, he hesitated for a moment.
He stayed with her while I had my tests. Afterward, he asked, “How much did you have to pay?”
“A hundred and ten.”
A notification appeared on my phone a moment later.

The nurse looked uncomfortable for a second, then let the subject drop.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Evan turn toward me without a word.
Beside him, Claire Morgan suddenly widened her eyes.
“Oh, wait. I remember you. We went to college together, didn't we? Same year, same small degree program.”
She gestured between them. “I'm Claire. This is Evan. Do you remember us?”
In college, you hardly ever heard one of their names without the other. Whenever our friends ran a cutest-couple poll in the group chat, they won by a mile.
They were hard to forget.
I nodded slowly. “Right. I remember.”
“I'm really sorry,” Claire said. “I only just moved back to the States. I'm still getting used to driving here again. I didn't mean to hit you.”
I was sitting on a bench, waiting for my results.
“It's okay.”
She sat down beside me and made conversation.
“Did I hear you say you're getting divorced?”
Evan stood with his hands in his pants pockets, watching me too.
I nodded again.
“You really have to be careful who you marry,” Claire said. “There are some real creeps out there.”
She tipped her face up to Evan, teasing him.
“Hey, I heard you're still single. Are you that scared of ending up with the wrong person? Or have you been waiting for me?”
Before Evan could answer, the nurse came back to tell me my results were ready.

My gaze snapped to his. He was smiling, causing my heart to skip a painful beat. Before I could respond, the music began, and my body instinctively reacted to the sweet melody.

The crowd gasped as Lex pulled me into a more intimate position, his hands roaming over my body in a seductive manner.
The experience was both terrifying and magical, allowing me to feel every longing emotion through the dance.
I soon found myself lost in his arms.
When the music finally stopped, my arms were wrapped around his neck, his hands resting on my back, our noses almost touching. He gazed deeply into my eyes.
The ballroom fell silent.
Was he about to kiss me?

Of me saying I want to climb him like a tree.
And he just. Texted. Back.
It's the dog's fault, really.
If this untrained Great Dane I'm walking had any manners at all, I never would've ended up here:
With my leash wrapped around the most gorgeous man I've ever seen.
Lucky for me, the guy is a good sport about it.
(Although his joke that “Dogs take after their owners” hits a little too close to home when Rufus starts humping his leg.)
He leaves me with his business card and a smile that makes my knees weak.
I'm still pinching myself as me and the bestie resume our walk.
“Methinks you had a little crush on him,” she accuses.
Not thinking and a little flustered by the whole experience, I reply, “I’d wrap my legs around his waist tighter than that leash.”
THAT'S when she reveals that she'd been recording my response.
THAT'S when she gives me the most devilish grin I've ever seen and says, “You're welcome.”
And THAT'S when she hands me my phone and reveals...
She sent the recording to him.
My heart is in my throat as those three little dots appear…
Then a text.
“PROVE IT.”

“You’re soaking wet, Genevieve. Tell me, was it me that made you this way or him?” his voice told her to be careful with her answer. His knuckles slid down through her folds and she threw her head back as she moaned. “Weakness?”
