When He Chose Her Over His Son
Zara Thorne · Completed · 7.3k Words
Introduction
Leo hung over sharkinfested open sea, waiting for his father, Mafia Don Dante Moretti.
But Dante never came. He stayed behind to comfort Bianca, the woman he believed had saved his life. He had handed her complete control over the family’s armed forces, cutting off every possible way for me to mount a rescue.
A ghost from the past returned and exposed every buried truth.
Dante crumbled under the weight of his guilt, consumed by regret. He begged for my forgiveness. But by then, my son was all that mattered to me.
Chapter 1
It was a rainy night over the international waters of the Pacific.
My four-year-old son, Leo, hung suspended in mid-air from a heavy-duty crane. Beneath him, the dark water had been chummed with flesh and blood, drawing several great white sharks into endless, churning circles.
A ten-minute countdown ticked away in the top right corner of the screen.
The kidnappers demanded no ransom. Their only condition was that Dante show up in person; otherwise, the mafia heir would end up in the belly of a shark.
I dialed Dante's private line like a madwoman.
"Elena, stop this childish play for attention. Bianca was just bumped into outside. Her heel broke and she's completely shaken up. I have to stay with her."
He even had the audacity to comfort me with absolute, arrogant certainty. "Relax. I'm the one they want. They won't touch our son until they see me."
Bianca's voice drifted in from the background, soft and agonizing as a splinter beneath the skin. "Dante… I'm so scared…"
"Don't be afraid. I'm here," he told her, his tone shifting instantly.
The line abruptly went dead.
On the live feed, a massive shark launched itself from the water, shredding the little white sneaker on Leo's kicking foot.
As my hands gripped the steering wheel, my mind blurred. A memory flashed back to a late night when Leo was two. The great mafia don sat quietly by the crib, staring at his sleeping boy for ten solid minutes.
He pulled me into his arms. "My greatest fear is losing you both."
Those old vows rotted straight to the bone. Now, they were nothing but a sick joke.
I slammed my foot on the gas pedal. The engine roared, tearing through the pitch-black, rainy night.
Behind me was the shore. Ahead lay the unforgiving ocean.
Dante.
Your son could no longer wait for you to save him.
Rocco sat in the passenger seat and slammed his fist against the dashboard. "Ma'am, someone sliced through the family's encrypted channels. They're dead serious."
Torrential rain hammered against the windshield, falling so violently that the wipers could not clear the glass even on their maximum setting.
I swiped open the encrypted terminal. Leo dangled from the crane over the open sea, while the dorsal fins of sharks sliced through the surface beneath him. The timer ticked mercilessly: 09:47… 09:46… His piercing screams crashed through the tiny speakers. "Mommy!"
A mechanically altered male voice echoed from the device. "Bring the Godfather. Otherwise, get ready to collect a corpse."
Rocco stared at the screen and cursed under his breath. "Fuck."
He usually never swore. In the ten years I had known him, it was the first time I had ever heard him curse.
I pressed the emergency override line again. It connected exactly three seconds later.
"Dante—"
"Elena, someone is tailing Bianca. I have to get her to a safe house first."
"Leo is suspended over the open sea! He's surrounded by sharks and the kidnappers are only giving you ten minutes—"
"I'm the one they want." His tone grew icy. "They won't touch Leo until they see me. It's basic logic. Do you not understand that? I'll head out as soon as I drop her off."
Bianca's sickeningly delicate voice drifted in from the background. "Dante… maybe you should just go… I'll be okay on my own…"
"How can you be okay on your own? I'm taking you," he told her, his voice instantly softening, before aiming his words back at the receiver. "Elena, wait for my call."
He hung up.
I stared at the screen. The countdown jumped to 08:00. A giant shark leaped from the surf. The little white sneaker on Leo's foot was already gone. Barefoot, he curled up frantically at the end of the swaying rope.
Driven by sheer panic, I dialed my mother, Caroline.
Her voice on the other end was unnervingly calm. "The kidnappers are using an old, decommissioned family frequency. Whoever they are, they know our inner workings inside and out. I can't track them any further. At the old docks, your father left a boat. I'll have someone bring you the keys."
There were no reinforcements, no shortcuts. That boat was the only fading glimmer of hope left in this absolute despair.
My cell phone vibrated again. It was a text message from my father, Enzo. It contained a single line:
"If these old bones can trade for Leo's life, just say the word. The boat is ready for you."
I did not reply. I tossed the phone back toward the passenger seat.
I glanced down at the passenger side. The toy dinosaur Leo had left in the car lay there next to Rocco. It was small enough to fit in the palm of a hand. Its unblinking, shiny plastic eyes stared right at me.
That was exactly how Dante had looked at Leo that night by the crib.
I reached out, flipped the toy over, and stopped looking at it.
Rocco's gruff voice pulled me back to reality. "Where to, ma'am?"
To the open sea—the thought surged forward as pure instinct. I had already pictured exactly how I would carve through the storm and charge straight beneath that crane. But a second later, I crushed the urge entirely. Rushing in empty-handed would accomplish absolutely nothing; I would only be throwing another life away.
"Command center first." I wiped a frantic mix of sweat and rainwater from my face and cranked the steering wheel hard. "I need men, I need guns, and I need everything we have that can float. How much time is left on the clock?"
"Seven minutes and twelve seconds." Rocco glanced down at the screen.
The brutal storm raged on, and the countdown ticked down mercilessly, second by second. Out on the open ocean, the sharks continued to circle flawlessly beneath a little boy's dangling feet.
