Introduction

For seven years, I told myself James wasn't cold; he simply loved quietly. Then my car died after midnight, and he told me to call a cab. When I earned the promotion I had chased for two years, he forgot my message. But when his ex said she felt sick, he left work with medicine in one hand and her exact coffee order in the other. That was when I understood: my husband knew how to care. He had simply never chosen to care for me. By our anniversary, I would stop waiting, leave his gift on the table, and move out. Only then would James begin to love me—and by then, it would be too late.

Chapter 1

At 11:47 p.m., my car died beneath the yellow lights of an empty grocery store parking lot.

The engine coughed once, then the dashboard went black. Rain tapped the windshield hard enough to blur the closed storefronts. I tried the ignition again, although I already knew it would not help.

My phone showed nine percent battery.

I called my husband.

James answered on the sixth ring. "Claire?"

Relief came so fast it embarrassed me. "My car broke down on Mercer. I think it's the battery, but I'm not sure. The store is closed, and there isn't anyone around. Can you come get me?"

A keyboard clicked on his end. James worked late often, and I had spent years treating the sound of him typing as proof that his distance had a practical explanation.

"Call a cab," he said.

I looked through the rain at the empty road. "It's almost midnight. Could you at least stay on the phone until one gets here?"

He exhaled. Not worry. Irritation.

"Claire, I'm in the middle of something. Use the roadside number in the glove box. That's what we pay for."

"I already called. They said forty-five minutes."

"Then wait in the car and lock the doors."

I pressed my thumb against the wedding band on my left hand. "James—"

"I have to finish this tonight. Text me when you're home."

The line went dead.

For a few seconds, I held the phone to my ear anyway.

Then the screen lit with the call summary: one minute, twelve seconds.

Seven years of marriage, reduced to instructions I could have found on a safety website.

I locked the doors.

The tow truck took fifty-three minutes. During that time, two cars slowed near the entrance before moving on. Each set of headlights made me sit straighter. I kept my phone in my palm, volume up, expecting James to call back when the urgency in my voice finally reached him.

He did not.

At twelve-twenty, my battery dropped to four percent. I opened our text thread and scrolled past grocery lists, flight numbers, and reminders I had sent him about his mother's birthday. There were no messages asking whether the stranger walking past my car had frightened me, or whether the rain had gotten inside when I checked the hood. I typed, Are you coming? Then deleted it. He had already answered that question.

The driver who arrived was a woman named Rosa with silver braids tucked beneath a knit cap. She tested the battery, shook her head, and asked whether someone was coming for me.

"My husband is working," I said.

Rosa glanced at the dark parking lot, then at me. She did not say anything.

Her silence felt kinder than James's voice.

She waited until my rideshare pulled in. Before I got out of the truck, she wrote the name of a reliable repair shop on the back of the receipt.

"Don't let them overcharge you," she said. "And message somebody when you get home."

"I will. Thank you."

I texted James from the rideshare.

Tow truck came. On my way home.

The message showed Delivered. No reply appeared.

Our townhouse was dark when I arrived. His car was in the garage, which meant he had been less than twenty minutes away the entire time.

I stood in the mudroom with rainwater dripping from my coat and told myself the same things I had told myself for years. James carried pressure differently. James did not panic. James showed love by providing stability, not reassurance. James had never been good with emotional emergencies.

The explanations came easily because I had polished them through repetition.

I hung my wet coat, wiped the floor, and found him in the study.

He sat before two monitors, sleeves rolled to his elbows. One screen held a spreadsheet. The other showed a basketball game with the sound off.

He looked over when I entered. "You got back."

Not Are you okay?

Not I'm sorry.

Just confirmation that the problem had solved itself without costing him anything.

"The battery's dead," I said. "I left the car there."

"We can deal with it tomorrow."

"I was scared."

His attention returned to the spreadsheet. "But you're fine."

I waited for him to hear what he had said.

He did not.

In the kitchen, I made tea I did not want. I set out his mug too, because habit moved faster than hurt. When I brought it into the study, he had turned the basketball game up.

"Thanks," he said, taking the mug without looking at me.

That small word almost rescued him. I hated that it almost did.

I slept badly and woke before six. James was already dressed when I entered the kitchen, knotting his tie beside the counter. He had finished the coffee I programmed every night and left the empty pot on the warmer.

"Morning," I said.

He glanced at me. His eyes paused on the shadows beneath mine.

For one foolish second, I thought he was about to ask whether I had been able to sleep after sitting alone in a dark parking lot.

Instead, he frowned.

"You look exhausted," he said. "We're having dinner with the Carters next week. Try not to look this miserable then. People notice."

He picked up his travel mug and walked out.

The front door closed before I could answer.

My phone lay on the counter between us, silent since the message marked Delivered.

My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.

But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.

In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.

"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.

"Who the fuck is Jason?"

My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.

I ran away for my life!

But weeks later, I woke up pregnant with his heir!

They say my heterochromatic eyes mark me as a rare true mate. But I’m no wolf. I’m just Elle, a nobody from the human district, now trapped in Brad's world.
