Introduction

After the apocalypse, I built Dawnlight Base.

On an outside run, I died in an ambush—blast, fire, bullets. I watched my blood sink into the sand and thought it was over.

Then I opened my eyes five years later, living in a stranger’s body.

On a transport truck, I was locked in an iron cage with guns trained on us. The others told me who I was now: a bottom-tier gate guard, “cargo” being sold by Dawnlight to a mining camp.

They said after my death, my girlfriend took the command room, promoted her own people, broke up my old crew and stripped their weapons. Mismanagement followed. Mining rights were pawned off. Then they started selling the living.

I escaped and slipped back under the wall.

The quarantine corridor at the North Gate had collapsed and no one repaired it. A long line waited at the ration point, bowls filled with water-thin gruel.

And my girlfriend was signing papers—inviting an outside warlord into the city to “share governance.”

A week later, his convoy rolled through the gate. From the command building’s second-floor window, I flipped the signal switch.

The gate dropped behind them.

When gunfire erupted from every direction, they finally understood—

I was back.

Chapter 1

I was back.

————

The truck bucked nonstop, like someone was hammering my temples again and again.

The first thing I tasted when I came to was rust.

Sand and wind poured in from outside, dry and dusty, carrying that stale dirt smell. Far off, scattered howls rose and fell—half animal, half human—dragging on too long.

I blinked. My vision wobbled before it finally steadied.

This wasn’t the command room. It wasn’t an outpost convoy. It wasn’t the last wall of fire I remembered.

It was the bed of a modified truck.

Steel bars had been welded into a full cage over the cargo bed. Wind slipped through the gaps, and so did sand. There were only five or six of us inside—not packed tight enough to be immobile, but with no space that could be called comfortable. Someone had their face buried in their knees, sucking air. Someone was shaking. Someone stared out through the bars at the yellow wasteland, unblinking.

We were cargo in a cage, rocking as the wheels hit every rut.

Outside the cage stood a guard. His boots were planted on the narrow step along the bed’s edge. A canteen, a knife, and a ring of keys hung from his belt. He held a rifle, and the muzzle kept sweeping across us. He didn’t need to climb inside; standing out there was enough to control everyone. Now and then he knocked the bars with the butt of his gun, a reminder not to move.

I tried flexing my fingers. The joints were stiff, like I hadn’t eaten properly in a long time.

My chest felt tight too. Every breath came with a sharp sting, as if I were inhaling grit.

This body was in terrible shape.

But worse than that—somehow, I was still alive.

The moment the thought surfaced, my mind snapped fully awake. Memory tore open like a split sack and spilled out all at once.

My name is Kael Vaughn.

I founded the Dawnlight Base. I wrote its rules. I was the man everyone called “Captain.”

The year the world ended, radiation storms swept through the cities. Power grids failed. Communications died. People didn’t just starve—they got infected in shelters that were supposed to save them.

Radiation turned some of the infected into mindless walkers. They were drawn to noise and the smell of blood. Slow in daylight, but at night they moved like something was pushing them.

Back then there were no heroes, only choices: stick together and live, or scatter and die alone.

I pulled in whoever I could. I fixed whatever could be fixed. I held whatever ground could be held.

We grew from a camp of a few dozen into a walled settlement of hundreds. The field teams cleared routes and hauled in salvage. The production crews held stable resource sites and kept basic materials flowing. The workshop repaired and modified, turning scrap into tools and weapons…

More people kept coming. In eight years, the camp became a base of nearly three thousand.

And threats never stopped. The dead were just the loudest one. Shortages killed faster: water, food, fuel, medicine—lose any one of them and the base would start choking.

Worse were the roaming warbands. They’d started as scattered raiders, then grew by hitting convoys, taking out outposts, swallowing smaller settlements, until they became armored caravans on wheels.

No flags. No laws. They could talk business, but if the deal soured they’d shoot. They could sign agreements, but those agreements only ever bound other people.

Brick was the worst of them.

He didn’t hold territory. He drifted like a wolf pack across the wastes, living on extortion and kidnapping, trading captives for supplies.

We’d fought him more than once. Both sides bled. I’d always treated him as a problem that had to be dealt with.

And then I died.

That last field run was supposed to be simple: recover a batch of generator parts and cable reels.

I’d scouted the route myself. The timing window should’ve been safe.

But less than half a day after we left the walls, we were hit under an abandoned overpass. An explosion took out the lead vehicle’s axle. The rest of the convoy slammed the brakes, formation collapsing in a heartbeat.

Then came suppressing fire—bullets drumming on metal like heavy rain, sparks flying.

I jumped out and organized a counterattack, tried to force a breakout, but they’d planted blocking vehicles and used bait to drag a horde in our direction.

That was when I knew we’d been set up.

The last things I saw were my people splitting apart under pressure, the outline of Brick’s caravan rolling through dust in the distance, and a burning bottle smashing against the ground—fire surging toward us.

Then the world went black.

I thought that was the end.

But now I was waking up in a cage, like someone had hauled me out of a grave and crammed me into another man’s bones.

“Hey… you awake?”

Someone beside me offered a canteen, black with grime, its mouth dusty with grit.

I didn’t take it immediately. I looked at him first. A man in his thirties, lips cracked, eyes still clear. He kept his voice low, like he was afraid the guards would hear.

“Drink,” he whispered. “If you don’t, you’ll die on the road. They’ll just toss you off.”

I took the canteen and swallowed.

The water was warm, metallic, but it eased the raw burn in my throat.

I handed it back and kept my tone flat. “Where are we going?”

The man gave a bitter half-smile. “You really slept through it… The mines. Brick’s mines. We’re being delivered to work.”

My stomach dropped, but my face didn’t move. “How long?”

“Two days if we’re lucky. Three if we’re not.” He glanced toward the guard outside the cage. “This run stays off the main roads. They don’t want other caravans stealing the shipment.”

“Shipment,” I repeated.

He didn’t answer. He just tipped his chin toward the rest of the cage.

Fresh rope burns marked wrists. Blood showed where chains had rubbed ankles raw. We weren’t hired hands. We weren’t prisoners of war. We were inventory.

At the far end of the cage, a younger man suddenly choked on his words, voice trembling. “I didn’t steal anything… I swear I didn’t. They said it was a field job collecting scrap equipment. Two full meals, that’s all. I went with them… and at the meeting point they tied me up and threw me in here…”

Someone snapped at him. “Shut up. Crying won’t do anything.”

The young man lifted his head, face gray with dust. “Then… will Dawnlight come get us? The base has walls. They have guns. They have rules.”

“You still don’t get it,” an old man beside him sneered. “That’s why you got sold so easily. Dawnlight is the one selling us to Brick.”

Something tightened in my chest.

The younger man shook his head. “No. Dawnlight has rules.”

“Had,” the old man said. “The rules died with Kael. After he was gone, everything changed.”

I kept my breathing even. “Kael… how long has he been dead?”

The old man studied me, like he was trying to read something off my face. “Five years. You didn’t know? You not from Dawnlight?”

I didn’t answer. Five years was long enough for rot to spread through anything.

Once the talking started, it didn’t stop. Like people had been holding it in for too long.

Someone said after Kael died, Vera didn’t lead revenge—she backed Marcus instead. Someone said Marcus had sold Kael’s route to Brick and that was why the ambush happened. Someone said they lived off stored supplies at first—guns and grain in the warehouse, a perimeter that still held. Then management turned to chaos. Patrols became Marcus’s private men. Field teams kept getting hit. Losses piled up like interest.

“The ration line gets thinner every week,” the man with the canteen muttered. “Up top, though, they still drink and eat meat. Look at us—you can tell.”

“The mines went bad too,” the old man added. “Ore used to be the base’s lifeline. Now half the mining rights are pledged to Brick for food and ammo. When that wasn’t enough… they started pledging people.”

“Not openly,” someone hurried to say. “Most folks inside don’t know. They think it’s labor assignment, or ‘field accidents.’ The ones who know… don’t talk.”

“Because if you talk, you disappear,” the canteen man said, swallowing hard.

I stared at him. “Then what about Kael’s people? Raymond. The old field squads. The workshop hands—where are they? How did they let this happen?”

His eyes flickered, a reflex like he wanted to pretend he hadn’t heard. Then he looked away, careful to avoid the guard’s sweeping muzzle.

The old man stayed quiet for two beats before letting out a cold laugh. “Where would they be? Broken up. Kael’s people wouldn’t bend to Marcus, and Marcus wasn’t going to keep them whole.”

The canteen man checked the guard again, then leaned closer. “At first it was ‘reassignment.’ They called it restructuring. They split Kael’s people into scattered groups, shoved them into different shifts, cut their ranks again and again.”

“And then?” I asked.

“Then it got simpler. Frame them—‘hoarding ammo,’ ‘dealing with raiders.’ Anyone who wouldn’t bow got thrown into the holding cells. When they came out, they weren’t patrol anymore. They were labor.”

The old man added, “Today you carry crates in the warehouse. Tomorrow you haul stone to patch walls.”

I didn’t press for more.

My people hadn’t died. They’d been stripped down, teeth pulled one by one. Dirtier than killing them outright—and exactly the kind of thing Vera and Marcus would do.

I filed every detail away.

I stopped asking questions.

Right now, the only thing that mattered was getting off this truck alive.

I had to get back to the base, find the old guard, figure out what had happened, and rebuild the system.

Otherwise Dawnlight would be sold down to the bones.

But first I needed to confirm one thing: who was I now?

I looked down at the uniform on my body. A gate-guard’s jacket, worn nearly white, with crude patches sewn into the elbows. On my chest, a strip of cloth had a name stitched into it, stained yellow with sweat but still readable.

Nolan Reed.

I let out a slow breath. I’d been shoved into Nolan’s body.

A gate guard, sold off as collateral to Brick—meaning he either crossed the wrong people, got framed, or was simply easy to dispose of.

The original owner probably hadn’t made it. He died somewhere on this transport, and I woke up in his place.

I pushed the conclusion down. There was no room for pity, and no room for rage.

Only action.

Run.

I had to run.

I lifted my eyes past the bars and started reading the convoy’s rhythm.

Through the blowing sand I could make out two more trucks—three modified rigs in total, spread out. Mine led. The other two ran behind, one to the left, one to the right, each with the same welded cage and a guard standing outside with a gun.

On both sides of the road: sand flats and broken stone, the occasional collapsed billboard, rusted-out car shells.

Terrain like this could let people scatter—if there was confusion. If the guard’s attention got dragged away.

The confusion came quickly.

Out in the sand ahead, shapes lurched into view—one, then two, then a line of them. They moved stiffly, but fast enough, rushing toward the convoy.

The guard tensed instantly, raised his rifle, spat a curse, and fired.

Bullets punched into the bodies. Some dropped. Some staggered and kept coming.

They weren’t close yet, but there were more and more of them.

The guard kept shooting and yelled toward the cab, “Horde! Don’t slow down! Push through!”

The truck didn’t get hit, but the jolting became worse as the driver accelerated. The tires smashed over rocks, the entire cage vibrating, steel bars buzzing. Inside, people were thrown into each other. Someone clung to the bars to keep from falling. Breathing turned sharp, panic spreading like sweat.

“They’ll use us as bait!” the young man rasped.

The guard snapped his head back, muzzle leveling through the bars at him. “Say another word and I’ll toss you out right now.”

But in the middle of the chaos, I felt calmer.

This was the window.

AN AGE GAP, FORCED PROXIMITY, BLACK FLAG ROMANCE

Vincenzo Valentini is a man who sees the world as a business counter and human beings as merchandise.

The owner of an empire built upon corpses and submission, he is the reflection of pure perversity.

When fate places Andrew Thompson, the son of his greatest rival, into his hands, the plan was simple: use him, break him, and discard him like a toy that has lost its appeal.

What Vincenzo did not expect was that, beneath the youthful skin and the appearance of innocence, Andrew hid the same abyss as he did.

Vincenzo never wanted redemption. He never wanted someone to save him from his own darkness. He was seeking a mirror. And in Andrew, he found the partner who, upon seeing his blood-stained hands, does not recoil in terror, but trembles with desire.

In this perverse game, the "little toy" proves to be the perfect executioner. The mafia leader found someone who not only accepts his cruel side but cultivates it, feeding the monster Vincenzo has always been.

Where there should have been fear, lust emerged. Where there should have been hatred, a perverse loyalty was born. Andrew Thompson is the dark reflection of Vincenzo, the soldier the underworld did not see coming, and the man who proved that, for some, paradise only makes sense if it is in the middle of chaos.

Vincenzo opened the doors to his empire, but Andrew was the only one capable of invading his heart.

They are not heroes. They are hell on earth.
