Introduction

To complete my undercover mission, I accidentally had a wild night with my target—Claire, that supremely powerful man.
I fled in terror, but left my wallet behind.
He tracked me down following the clues, but mistook my ambitious roommate Cathy for me.
Faced with the choice between becoming his woman or receiving millions in cash, Cathy didn't hesitate to lie and steal everything that should have been mine.
Meanwhile, I was inexplicably transferred to work beside him as his most inconspicuous assistant.
From then on, I was forced to watch my former roommate dressed in luxury brands, riding in expensive cars, enjoying his ultimate devotion.
She flaunted her power before me, trampling me underfoot.
And that man—while indulging his "fake" lover in every way, would always study me with probing eyes when no one was around, slowly tormenting me, closing in step by step.
"Your scent is very familiar."
When the truth was finally revealed and the impostor was exposed, he realized he had been cherishing the wrong person.
The entire city was locked down as he held me captive in his arms, his eyes red: "Susan, after playing me for so long, where do you think you're going now?"

Chapter 1

My head was splitting.

I opened my eyes and found myself in a hotel room bed, with a man sleeping beside me.

When I saw his face clearly, I froze completely.

Clair.

The man in control of Rand Corporation, the real master of this city's underworld, and the first name I'd memorized during my two years undercover.

Blood rushed back from my limbs to my heart, then surged to my head the next second.

I looked down at the suggestive marks on my body as fragments of last night's memories came flooding back.

Company party, champagne, someone handing me a drink, dizziness, heat, someone holding me up through the blur... then this face, so close to mine in the dim hotel corridor lighting.

I actually slept with him...

Cold sweat trickled down my spine.

Rumor had it that Clair was ruthless with every woman who tried to get close to him—none lasted more than three months by his side.

I had to leave before he woke up.

I carefully slipped out of his arm and got out of bed.

Clothes were scattered all over the floor.

I quickly grabbed my jacket, my hands shaking so badly I could barely fasten the buttons.

My underwear was nowhere to be found, but I couldn't worry about that now.

As I picked up my purse, I felt around briefly, made out the shapes of my phone and keys, and didn't dare stay any longer. I pulled open the door and slipped into the hallway.

The moment the door closed, I gasped for air, my legs so weak I could barely stand.

By the time I got back to the apartment, it was already bright outside.

"Susan? You're back?" Cathy came out of the kitchen. She was wearing the T-shirt and shorts I'd just bought her, her long hair casually tied in a ponytail, concern on her face. "Where were you last night? I called you several times."

My heart tightened again.

"Working late," I heard myself say, my voice reasonably steady. "Just crashed on the office couch for the night."

"Working late again?" Cathy frowned, handing me a cup of coffee. "Your company is so exploitative. Wasn't the party enough? They made you work all night, too?"

I took the coffee, the scalding cup burning my fingertips, but it made me feel somewhat real. "Yeah, had some files to handle."

Cathy sat down across from me, curling her legs up on the sofa.

We'd been playing this act for two years—two young women sharing an apartment, close as can be. It explained why we were always coming and going together, why there were traces of another woman's life in my apartment.

It was a perfect cover for undercover work.

But actually, Cathy didn't know my real identity.

She just thought I was an ordinary office worker sharing rent to save money. And she never asked too many questions. That was our unspoken boundary.

"You look terrible," Cathy stared at me. "Go take a shower and get some rest."

She stood up. "Oh, and Susan, thanks for the clothes you bought me. They're really nice. You're always buying me clothes. I feel bad about it."

I smiled faintly. "Don't feel bad. You help me out a lot, too. And please, don't use your credit card to buy me stuff anymore. We don't need to keep score like that."

Last week, when we went shoe shopping together, she'd insisted on paying with her credit card, but I knew things weren't easy for her right now either.

Cathy smiled too. "When I have money, I'll buy you things."

I nodded. "When you have money, I won't be shy about it."

Cathy's expression darkened a bit. "Who knows when that'll be. Right now, I can't even find a decent job. I wish I had a rich boyfriend."

"If I really went looking for a rich man, would you laugh at me?"

I patted her shoulder. "Don't overthink it. If the guy truly loves you, then be with him. Otherwise, there's no point in making yourself miserable. You can live well on your own. Don't forget, you've got me behind you."

Cathy shrugged and turned back to her room.

I watched her door close, then slowly slid down against my own door until I was sitting on the floor. Last night's chaos and Clair's face surfaced again.

My heart pounded heavily in my chest.

I squeezed my eyes shut.

Just treat it as an absurd dream.

He definitely wouldn't remember.

He absolutely couldn't remember.

At the same time, in the hotel's penthouse suite.

Clair was fully awake.

He sat up, the silk covers sliding off to reveal his muscular upper body.

A faint fragrance still lingered in the room. Then he saw that patch of dried dark red on the sheets.

He narrowed his eyes, his gaze falling on a black wallet by the nightstand.

He got out of bed and picked it up.

An ordinary woman's wallet, containing over two hundred dollars in cash, several credit cards, and a shopping receipt.

The receipt was dated last week, from a mid-range mall in the city, for a purchase of women's shoes.

Just then, there was a knock at the suite door.

"Come in." Clair's voice was flat.

The door opened, and his assistant walked in, stopping respectfully a few steps away.

Clair handed over the receipt.

"Find out who this belongs to," he said, his tone revealing no emotion.

My parents wouldn't even look at me. "This is your fault! None of this would've happened if it weren't for you!"

"Get downstairs and apologize to your sister. If you can't, pack your things and get out."

They threw her a party at a downtown hotel while I died alone in my room.

I thought they'd be relieved. Maybe even glad. I thought they'd just move on like I never existed.

Zachary didn't hesitate. "Let Valerie go," he said.

He actually chose to save his sister-in-law! In that moment, even the baby in my belly seemed to stop kicking.

Later, they locked me in the basement. Drugs to delay labor were pumped into my veins over and over. Zachary wanted to save the "firstborn son" status for his sister-in-law's child.

When my husband Allen took my hand with tears in his eyes and said, "Only you can save her," I agreed without hesitation.

When the doctor explained the surgical risks and potential complications, I smiled and nodded my understanding.

My parents said I'd finally learned what sisterly love meant.

Even Allen, who'd always been cold to me, held my hand gently and said, "The surgery's safe. You're so healthy, nothing will go wrong. When you recover, I'll take you to Hawaii."

But they don't know that no matter how the surgery goes, I won't be around to celebrate.

Because I just got my own test results—I have terminal brain cancer. I'm going to die anyway.
