Introduction

“I want out of this marriage.”

The words were cold… ironic coming from the man who betrayed her five years ago.

But the broken woman he once discarded no longer exists.

She has rebuilt herself from the ashes… stronger, sharper, and untouchable. Now a powerful CEO and a devoted mother, she has no interest in reopening old wounds or letting the past back into her carefully rebuilt life.

Unfortunately, fate has other plans.

When the man who shattered her heart is suddenly thrown back into her world, buried emotions resurface… along with a secret powerful enough to change everything.

Because the little boy she fiercely protects may be his son.

Just when the past begins clawing its way back, another threat rises.

The woman currently by his side is not the type to walk away quietly. Ruthless, manipulative, and dangerously obsessed, she will stop at nothing to keep the man she claims as hers… even if it means destroying the woman he once lost and tearing apart the life she fought so hard to build.

This time, the stakes are higher.

And walking away may no longer be an option.

Chapter 1

The door slammed so hard the walls seemed to shake with it.

Lena’s back hit the wood, her chest rising and falling like she had just run up several flights of stairs instead of taking the elevator. For a moment she simply stood there, staring into the living room that had once felt like home.

Now it felt like someone else’s house.

The couch. The coffee table. The framed wedding photo hangs neatly on the wall.

Everything looked the same and somehow… Everything felt wrong.

Her knees suddenly gave way beneath her.

She slid slowly down the door until she was sitting on the floor, pressing a hand tightly over her mouth. It didn’t help. A broken sob escaped anyway, harsh and uncontrollable.

Then another and another.

Soon she was crying so hard her shoulders trembled, her vision blurring as tears streamed down her face.

“Idiot,” she whispered hoarsely, shaking her head at herself. “You stupid, stupid idiot…”

Her phone was still clutched in her hand, the screen glowing faintly in the dim light of the room.

The message was still open, she didn’t need to read it again.

The words were already burned into her mind and the images that came with them were even worse.

I saw him with her. Bella Hawthorne.

Even thinking the name made her chest tighten painfully.

Lena squeezed her eyes shut, but it didn’t stop the memories from replaying.

Adrian’s car parked outside the café. Adrian’s hand, her husband’s hand—resting comfortably on another woman’s waist and Beautiful, flawless Bella, smiling up at him like she belonged there.

Like she had every right to be there. Because apparently… she did.

Lena pushed herself to her feet, her legs slightly unsteady as she walked into the living room.

Her eyes drifted to the wedding photo again and for a few seconds she just stood there staring at it.

Then she crossed the room, reached up, and pulled the frame off the wall with trembling hands.

They looked… fine in the picture.

Not particularly happy. Not deeply in love. Just… fine.

Adrian stood tall beside her in his tailored suit, his expression calm and distant. Controlled, as always.

And she stood next to him in white, smiling a little too brightly, gripping his arm like she was afraid he might disappear if she let go.

“Two-year contract,” she murmured under her breath, her voice bitter. “That’s all it ever was.”

She placed the frame face down on the table, unable to keep looking at it.

Their marriage had never been a love story. It had always been a deal. A two year contract deal. That was the agreement.

Two years for Adrian to regain full control of his company, calm the board of directors, and satisfy his demanding family.

Two years of pretending to be husband and wife.

And she had agreed. God… she had agreed so easily because she had loved him long before any contract had existed and long before the ring.

They had gone to the same college. She had been the quiet girl who sat two rows behind him in lectures, the one who lent him her notes whenever he skipped class, the one who listened patiently whenever he complained about exams, pressure, expectations.

She had been his friend and she had loved him silently for years.

Adrian, on the other hand, had only ever had eyes for one person. Bella the beautiful, popular cheerleader everyone admired.

The girl with the perfect smile and effortless confidence. The kind of girl who could walk into any room and instantly become the center of attention without even trying.

The girl he had loved back then. And apparently… The girl he still loves now.

Lena let out a shaky laugh that quickly dissolved into something closer to a sob.

“I actually thought…” she murmured, pressing her fist lightly against her lips. “I actually thought maybe someday…”

She had known the marriage wasn’t real. She had known it was an arrangement. She had known he didn’t love her.

But some foolish, fragile part of her had hoped that maybe time would change something.

That if she was patient enough… If she tried hard enough… If she loved him quietly and stayed by his side without asking for anything in return… One day he might look at her and see more than just an obligation.

That small hope had kept her going all this time and now it is gone.

The sound of a key turning in the lock made her freeze. Her heart lurched painfully as the door opened and Adrian stepped inside.

He looked exactly the same as always…composed, controlled, his dark coat sitting perfectly on his shoulders, his expression unreadable.

He closed the door behind him and glanced up. Their eyes met and the air in the room suddenly felt heavy. Filled with all the things neither of them had said yet.

“Lena,” he said after a moment, his voice calm and distant. “We need to talk.”

She didn’t respond. She just stood there, arms wrapped around herself as though holding her body together.

Adrian removed his coat and placed it neatly aside before looking at her again.

His gaze was cool. “I won’t waste time,” he said.

Then he delivered the words that shattered the last fragile piece of her heart. “I want a divorce.”

The words hit her like a physical blow. Even though she had expected them. Even though she already knew.

Her breath caught in her throat. “A… divorce?” she repeated quietly.

“Yes.”

Her fingers slowly curled into fists. “What did I do wrong?”

For a brief second something flickered in his eyes. But it disappeared so quickly she couldn’t be sure it had been there at all.

“This isn’t about what you did wrong,” he said, glancing away. “This marriage isn’t working. It never really did. It’s better for both of us if we move on.”

She swallowed hard as her throat burned. “Is there… someone else?” She asked even after knowing what the truth was.

The question hung in the air between them. Fragile and Already answered.

He didn’t deny it. “Yes,” he said simply.

Her heart broke.

“Who?” she asked softly, though she already knew the answer but wanted to hear from his mouth.

“You already know.”

A quiet, bitter laugh escaped her. “Bella Hawthorne.”

Adrian nodded.“We’re together again,” he said. “I love her. I want to be with her.”

The room seemed to tilt slightly. For a moment Lena thought she might collapse. But she miraculously didn’t.

She remained standing, perfectly still, like if she moved even a little she would fall apart completely. “I see,” she said quietly.

Adrian studied her face then, as though expecting anger, shouting, accusations.

Instead she lifted her chin. “I’ll sign the divorce papers.”

He blinked in surprise. “That… was easier than I expected.”

A faint smile touched her lips, though there was no warmth in it.

“You already made your choice,” she said softly. “What exactly would I be fighting for?”

He hesitated before opening his briefcase and taking out a folder. “I prepared the documents already,” he said. “And I’ll make sure you’re compensated. You won’t be left with nothing.”

That was when something inside her snapped. A short, harsh laugh escaped her. “Compensated?” she repeated.

“You think money fixes this? You think you can just pay me off and walk away clean?”

“That’s not what I meant,” he replied, frowning slightly.

“Oh, but it is,” she said, her voice shaking with restrained anger. “Our marriage was a transaction, remember? So this is just you closing the deal.”

He said nothing.

Lena looked at him carefully. Really looked at him and her heart broke all over again.

“Don’t worry,” she said quietly. “I’ll sign. You won’t have to feel guilty for long.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened. “I’ll give you space,” he said after a moment. “I’ll stay somewhere else tonight.”

He turned toward the door.

“Adrian.” Lena called, making him pause.

“I hope,” she said softly, her voice barely steady, “that Bella is worth it.”

He didn’t respond. He simply walked out and the door closed behind him. The silence that followed felt unbearable.

Lena slowly sank onto the couch as her body finally gave up the strength she had been forcing into it.

The tears came again. This time it was harder and more painful.

She cried for the man she loved. She cried for the marriage that had never truly existed.

She cried for herself…for all the years she had spent hoping, waiting, believing in something that had never been meant for her.

That night, with swollen eyes and trembling hands, she signed the divorce papers.

Then she walked into the bedroom and began packing. Every folded shirt felt like a goodbye. Every item she placed in the suitcase felt like she was slowly erasing herself from his life.

By the time she finished, the sky outside had grown darker. She took one last look at the apartment that had once been her home. Then she walked out.

Inside the cab, the city lights blurred past the window as her thoughts drifted back to earlier that day.

To the hospital and remembering the doctor’s calm voice. “You’re pregnant, Mrs. Ravel.”

She had stared at him in shock. “That’s not possible.”

“It is,” the doctor had replied gently. “You’re a little over four weeks.”

Four weeks.

Adrian had only touched her once in the entire two years of their marriage.

A month ago he had come home drunk and had taken her to bed, and for that one foolish night she had allowed herself to believe things might finally change between them.

Instead… everything had become worse.

In the cab, Lena slowly placed a hand over her stomach. Her voice was barely more than a whisper. “He’ll never know about you.”

She stared out at the passing lights, her reflection faint against the window.

“We’re leaving tomorrow,” she murmured softly, still resting her hand on her still-flat stomach.

“And we’ll start over. Just you and me.”
