Introduction

Vivian Carter had everything the world said a woman should want — a face that sold magazines, a name that lit up Times Square, and a husband who was the most celebrated soccer player in the country. She gave it all up when Alan asked her to. She told herself it was love. It took almost losing her life on a delivery table, a best friend's betrayal, and a rival team's star forward to show her what love actually looks like.

This is not a story about a woman who was broken. This is a story about a woman who finally stopped pretending she wasn't.

Chapter 1

There is a photograph of me that once hung on a digital billboard above 42nd Street.

I used to love that. I used to land at JFK after an international shoot — Paris sometimes, Milan once, a disorienting five days in Tokyo that left me jetlagged for a week — and ride the cab into the city through the tunnel and come up blinking into the noise of Midtown, and somewhere between the airport and my apartment I would pass that billboard and there I'd be, thirty feet tall above the traffic, in a white silk slip dress with my arms out and my chin up and my eyes going somewhere past the camera toward something I alone could see. It was a fragrance ad. The campaign had run for two years. People sent me pictures of it from the back seats of taxis. A woman from Ohio sent me a letter once saying it made her feel like the future was possible.

I kept that letter. I do not know if I still have it.

The billboard is long gone now. A new campaign replaced it before I'd even fully registered it was over. That's the industry — it doesn't pause to mark your absence. It simply fills the space and keeps moving, and one day you realize the version of you that was thirty feet tall above Midtown exists only in people's memories and a folder on your old hard drive.

I tell you this not because I want your sympathy. I tell you this because you need to understand what I was carrying when I walked into this marriage, so that you can understand what I set down, and what it cost me to finally see that I'd set it down at all.

My name is Vivian Carter. I am thirty-two years old. I have a daughter named Lily who is eleven months and three days old, and she has her father's eyelashes and my stubbornness, and I am raising her alone in a two-bedroom condo in Lincoln Park that still smells faintly of the candle I've been burning to drown out the memory of a life I am still learning to grieve.

The man who gave her those eyelashes is Alan Carter. You know Alan. Everyone who has ever watched Major League Soccer or glanced at a sports page knows Alan — six-foot-two of controlled precision, captain of the Chicago Forge, the man who put MLS on the map three seasons running with a combination of tactical intelligence and the kind of physical play that makes broadcast cameras follow him regardless of where the ball is. His face is on every sports drink in every gas station in America. His smile is the kind that reads as warmth from the upper deck and registers as something closer to certainty up close — the confident certainty of a man who has never been told no by a stadium, and applies that expectation, quietly, to everything else in his life.

I loved him. I need you to hold that, because it changes the shape of everything that follows. I loved him with the full weight of myself, the way you love things that arrive when you are already so alive with your own momentum that you almost miss them. I was twenty-eight when we met. I was at the peak of what I was capable of — campaigns for three major fashion houses, a beauty collaboration that sold out in twelve markets, a waiting list of brands who wanted my face on their product before I'd even read the brief. I was not looking for anything. I was walking through a hotel lobby in Chicago on my way to a fitting.

He was sitting in the lobby bar, reading — an actual book, not his phone, which is how I noticed him first, the anachronism of it. He was in a gray henley and jeans and he had the kind of stillness that athletes sometimes have when they're not performing: deeply physical and completely at rest.

He looked up. He said, without any preamble: "You're Vivian. The billboard above 42nd Street."

I said yes, I was.

He said: "I always thought you looked like someone who knew exactly where she was going."

I thought it was a line. It wasn't. That's the thing I need you to understand about Alan: he meant everything, right up until the words changed.

We talked for two hours in that hotel lobby. He asked about my work the way people almost never do — not what it was like to be in magazines, but what happened to me inside it. Whether I was the same woman on both sides of a camera. Whether I liked who I was in those images or if they felt like someone adjacent to me.

I told him the truth, which surprised me. I told him I was most myself in front of a camera and still figuring out who I was everywhere else.

He was quiet for a moment. Then he said: "I feel that every time I walk off a pitch."

And that was it. That was the whole door, opening. I walked through it without looking for the hinges.

We dated for fourteen months. We were the kind of couple that makes relationships look effortless to people who are watching, which is a particular cruelty, because what it actually means is that you're both still performing and haven't yet reached the moment where the performance costs more than either of you budgeted. The press loved us. A magazine put us on a double cover and it was the best-selling issue of that year. I was in a red dress. He had his hand on my waist and was looking at me instead of the lens, and you could see in his eyes exactly what I saw in that hotel lobby: a man who was paying complete attention.

We married in March. I wore a gown that took ten weeks to make. Ria was my maid of honor. She cried during the vows in the way you cry at things you genuinely believe in.

I believed all of it too. Every single word.

Eight months after the wedding, on a Tuesday evening while we were eating takeout and watching something neither of us was really watching, Alan set down his fork and said: "Viv. Would you think about stepping back from the brands? Just for a while."

I looked at him.

He said: "When I'm away — when I'm in training camps or on the road — I think about the shoots. All those rooms full of people looking at you. And I know that's the work. I know that's what it is. But I—" He stopped. He picked up his fork again. "I think I need this."

The word need did something to me that I am still unpacking. It bypassed every professional instinct I had ever cultivated, every hard-won sense of my own market value, and landed somewhere older and softer and more willing than I knew I still was. I had spent a decade being wanted by rooms full of people. Nobody had ever just said they needed me to stay.

"Just for a while?" I said.

"Just for a while."

I called my agency the next morning. It is the call I have thought about most, in the years since. The call I replay at the worst angles, from the worst lighting, with the clearest eyes.

That was three years ago. The while never ended. And I disappeared into it so gradually that by the time I noticed I was gone, I had already forgotten the shape of the woman I'd been.

"Come here."
"What?" It was out of my mouth before I could stop it. I did not wait for him to answer me, I walked toward him.
"Dance on my lap."
My head screamed at me to turn around and run. But my whole body responded to his command.
"Yes, Alpha," I pulled my dress over my body, it dropped over my head and fell to the ground behind me. I was left in nothing but my matching bra and thong. My hands covered my chest on reflex.
"Let me see."
My hands dropped to my sides.
I lowered myself into his lap, facing him. His eyes peered into mine, and I could feel his hot breath fan my face. His dick responded to all my moves, hardening against my now-moist vagina. I swallowed hard, allowing my lips to part in a ragged breath. His hands trailed up to my waist.
"No touching."

“I hope she'd paid you well, because I'm going to fuck you all night long, hard,” he growled. “Sleep, then do it all over again. I want to feel you come for me, Andrea, want to feel you squeeze my cock, milking me.

Begging for me to give you the high only I can, I'm going to fucked you until I fuck all my wife's money's worth, I want you to remember how hard I took you while you're meeting her.” I sobbed, moaned, and tried to scramble out under him.

“No, please…Nick, let….let me explain.” Nick abruptly pulled out. His eyes were cold but hooded.
