Introduction
Chapter 1
Two days ago...
The Highlands of Eldoria stretched before me, a landscape of rolling green hills and dense forests that seemed to hum with secrets. I stood at the edge of the excavation site, the morning sun warming my face as I surveyed the ancient burial mound that had consumed my thoughts for weeks. There was something about this place—a sense of timeless mystery that I couldn't quite put into words.
"Dr. Valenwood, you might want to look at this," called Marcus, one of my top students. His voice pulled me from my reverie, and I walked over to where he stood at the edge of a trench, holding a small, intricately carved stone necklace in his gloved hand.
"What have you found, Marcus?" I asked, taking the stone necklace from him. As I examined it, my pulse quickened. The carvings were unlike anything I had seen before; they were interwoven symbols that seemed to pulse with almost hypnotic energy. "Interesting," I murmured. "This could be a significant find. We need to document its exact location and condition."
Marcus nodded and returned to his task, leaving me to ponder the stone's origins. My fascination with the mysteries of the past had driven me to pursue archaeology despite the challenges and sacrifices it demanded. I loved piecing together the stories of long-lost civilizations, and this site felt like it held a story waiting to be told.
As the day wore on, we unearthed more artifacts, each adding to the growing puzzle of the ancient culture we studied. By late afternoon, my hands are covered in dirt, and my clothes are smeared with mud and dust. I didn't mind; it was all part of the job I loved.
"Dr. Valenwood, I think we should wrap up for the day," suggested Lily, my trusted assistant. "The weather's starting to turn, and we don't want to risk damaging any of the finds."
I glanced at the dark clouds gathering on the horizon and nodded. "You're right. Let's secure everything and head back to camp."
As we packed up our tools and carefully stored the day's discoveries, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were on the verge of something monumental. The carvings on the stone Marcus had found haunted my thoughts, their meaning just out of reach.
Back at camp, I retreated to my tent, eager to review the notes and photographs taken that day. I spread my papers on the small desk, my mind racing with possibilities. The stone's symbols danced before my eyes, teasing me with their secrets.
The sound of raindrops pattering against the tent's canvas roof broke my concentration, and I realized how late it had become. I sighed and leaned back in my chair, rubbing my tired eyes.
"You really should take a break, Astrid," a voice from the tent's entrance said. It was Daniel, my mentor and long-time friend. He stepped inside, shaking the rain from his coat. "You've been at this all day," he said.
I smiled wearily. "I know, Daniel. But I can't help it. There's something about this site... I feel like we're on the brink of a major discovery."
Daniel nodded, understanding my obsession all too well. "You say that about almost all of your discoveries. Just don't burn yourself out. We need you at your best."
"Hey, I only say that about the ones that I have a good feeling on! I promise I'll get some rest," I replied, though my mind was still buzzing with unanswered questions.
The next day, we dawned with clear skies and renewed determination. I returned to the site, eager to continue our work. As we dug deeper, we uncovered more artifacts, each adding to the tapestry of the ancient civilization we were uncovering.
By midday, I was working in the trench where Marcus had found the carved stone. Carefully brushing away the dirt, I revealed what appeared to be the edge of a doorway, its surface adorned with the same intricate symbols as the stone necklace. The trench had a wall made from hundreds of stones, and the door was made of intricately designed oak wood. The design is beautiful despite all the dirt and centuries it's been through. Two wolves are sitting across from one another, looking up at what seems to be a Viking-style carving.
"Lily, come look at this," I called out, my voice tinged with excitement.
Lily hurried over, her eyes widening as she saw the doorway. "This is incredible, Astrid. We've never seen anything like it."
I nodded, my mind racing with possibilities. "We need to document this thoroughly and proceed with caution. This could be a significant breakthrough."
We worked tirelessly, photographing and mapping the doorway and its surroundings. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows over the site, we finally paused to take stock of our progress.
"Great work, everyone," I said, my voice filled with pride. "We've made remarkable progress today. Let's secure everything and get some rest. Tomorrow, we'll see what lies beyond this doorway."
As I lay in my tent that night, my thoughts were consumed by the day's discoveries. The symbols on the doorway seemed to call to me, whispering secrets from long ago—the symbols I have seen on the door frame and amulet must have meaning. I couldn't shake the feeling that we were on the brink of uncovering something extraordinary that would change our understanding of history forever.
The following day dawned bright and clear, the air crisp with the promise of discovery. We returned to the site, our excitement palpable. We worked methodically, clearing away the dirt and debris from the doorway. I stand there in awe, viewing the door from a new perspective. Whoever crafted this did so with immense care and love. As I admire the craftsmanship, a wave of curiosity comes over me. With anticipation, I traced the symbols on the door's surface. They seemed to hum with energy beneath my fingers, sending a shiver down my spine. Taking a deep breath, I pushed against the door, and with a groan of ancient hinges, it slowly swung open.
What lay beyond took my breath away—a hidden chamber filled with artifacts and inscriptions that spoke of advanced and perplexing civilization. The air was thick with the scent of history, and my heart pounded excitedly. As I stepped into the chamber, I felt a connection to the past, a sense of purpose I had never experienced before. The amulet in my bag seemed to grow warmer as if responding to the chamber's energy. As I grasp the amulet, I feel the heat rising, and it begins to buzz in my hand. It doesn't burn; the warmth is welcoming, almost as if calling for my attention. My curiosity intensifies, urging me to explore further. I remind myself that there is a lot to do; I will most definitely be looking at you some more later.
I continued my work in the chamber, and we meticulously cataloged our findings, each discovery adding to the intricate tapestry of the ancient civilization we were uncovering. The symbols on the amulet began to make more sense, aligning with the inscriptions we found in the chamber. Those symbols keep replaying in my mind. What could it be saying? These are not like regular Viking runes or Egyptian hieroglyphics. These look more intricate as if they have a purpose. To many individuals, it may look like lines, but to an archeologist, it's a world to be discovered: a story to be told, a mystery to be unfolded.
"Dr. Valenwood, we have all the inscriptions and symbols recorded. Three pages from the book are missing, but the rest of the writing is not illegible. With the AI tech, we can attempt to decipher the..." Marcus comes into the chamber with excitement.
"Marcus, what do you make of these symbols?" I turn to Marcus, who I interrupted. "Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt you; I need a different set of eyes to see what I see."
I point to the stone table. A couple of books, vials, and a letter with distinct writing are on it. I could not make it out, but it looked familiar—almost like I had seen it before.
"Sure thing. For one, I think whoever lived here or used this place for whatever reason left in a hurry." He said, looking around. "As for the symbols, they look very familiar to the Viking runes we found in the mountainside forest when we did that dig in Lorea. I can't be sure until I've compared them."
"Marcus, you are onto something," I hadn't even considered that trip. "Check this symbol. Isn't it like the book we dug up back in Lorea? Do you have that trip's hard drive?" Our eyes meet.
"I always bring them!" He looked at me in a playful disbelief.
"Alright, alright, my bad," I smile, throwing my hands up.
"I'm, like, the best tech person in the group," he muttered.
"Ha, ha, you're funny... sometimes," I turn to gather the book from the table. I carefully place it in a bag and seal it for observation. "Give this to Lily, please. Send Sam here so both of you can finish sealing up the artifacts. We have a lot of research to get started on."
"On it," carefully holding the artifact.
