Lumi Lite · Ongoing · 151.6k Words
Introduction
"But..." I breathed.
"Imagine suddenly returning with a husband so wealthy he makes them look like paupers. Not only is he filthy rich, but he's hopelessly in love with you, spoiling you rotten. Imagine their shock, their anger, and your satisfaction that you have exceeded their expectations. Won't that be fulfilling?"
"And... who would that husband be?" I whispered.
"Me." He grinned as he caressed my cheek. "Let's get married, my dear Iris."
••~•
After being humiliated and disowned on her wedding day, Iris is suddenly approached by Gordon Graff, the enigmatic and highly controversial billionaire and also her ex's uncle, who asks for her hand in marriage.
His goal: make her family and ex pay for everything they've done to her.
But what happens when the line between pretence and true love begins to blur, and dangerous secrets begin to unfold?
Will the man who has promised to protect her be her doom? And will she be a casualty in his dangerous game of revenge?
Chapter 1
"I object to this wedding!" Blair, my younger sister, yelled as she ran into the church.
"What are you doing? I thought you said you were sick?" I frowned, but she ignored me as she walked to Thomas, my groom, and gave him a passionate kiss.
"What are you doing? Today is the wedding." Thomas whispered.
"You don't have to marry her anymore. I just came back from the hospital, and I've got good news. We're having a baby." She grinned as she pulled out a paper from her purse and gave it to him.
"You're pregnant!" He gasped.
"Yes! You're going to be a father!" She squealed, and this time, he kissed her.
"Thomas? What's going on? Why is she telling you you're the father of her baby?" I asked nervously.
"Because he is." Blair rolled her eyes.
"You've been cheating on me? For how long?" I whispered as tears gathered in my eyes.
"Since it's all out now, there's no need to hide the truth anymore. Blair and I have been dating for two years." He shrugged.
"That's how long we've been engaged! How could you do that to me? I thought you loved me?"
"Love? Who could ever love you?" He sneered. "Blair was always my one true love. You were just the annoying sister I unfortunately had to get married to because the doctor said Blair would have a hard time conceiving, and I need an heir to my family business."
"But lucky for me, you're no longer needed since I'm pregnant." Blair kissed his cheek and smirked. "Honestly, you should be grateful that things turned out like this, because he was going to divorce you once you had two children, take them away and marry me."
"Mother, Father? Is this true? Did you guys really plan that?" I turned to my parents.
"Yes, and? I don't get why you're being so dramatic when you know your marriage was purely business from the beginning." My mother, Monica, scoffed.
"I know, but I love him." I wept as I grabbed Thomas' hand. "I love you, Thomas. I—"
I almost fell as he roughly pushed me away.
"Get it into your dumb skull, I don't love you. I never did. Blair is my soulmate."
"But today is our wedding. We—"
"Wrong. Today is no longer your wedding; it's now Thomas's and mine." Blair grinned.
"What are you talking about? It's still my wedding." I insisted.
"Blair is right. Since she's pregnant for Thomas, there's no need for him to marry Iris. They could get married instead." Ashley, Thomas’ mother, said.
"You can't do—"
"That's a brilliant idea, my dear. There's no need to cancel this and start preparing another one. We already have everything set. We just need to change the brides." Paul, Thomas’ father, replied.
"I agree. Iris, take your sister to the back and give her your wedding dress so she can get married." Mother urged.
"Father, please say something. You can't let them do this to me." I whispered, hoping for the first time he would support me.
"Stop your whining and go give Blair the dress." He said coldly, and my heart shattered.
"Of course, you'll take the side of your precious golden child." I sniffled as I wiped my tears.
"Let's go already. I want to be Mrs Graff." Blair smiled and grabbed my arm.
"No!" I yelled and shoved her away.
"What are you doing?" She scowled.
"I'm not giving you this dress, and I'm not watching you get married."
"Why are you acting like such a brat?"
"I'm the brat?! I'm not the one that is pregnant for my sister's fiancé and demanding to marry him like a slut!" I shouted, and she gasped.
"Shut the fuck up!" Father barked and slapped me.
"You hit me?" I whispered as I held my aching cheek.
"You will not insult my daughter ever again. You either do as you're told or get out and cease being part of this family." He growled, and my eyes widened.
"You don't mean that?" I trembled.
"You were always such a shame to me. I would be so glad to finally get rid of you." He sneered.
So, after years of trying to be the perfect child and living up to your impossible expectation while Blair was pampered and spoilt, I still don't mean anything.
"Fine. I'm no longer your daughter!" I cried and ran out of the church into the rain.
Blinded by grief, I ran across a road and gasped as I tripped on my dress and fell to the ground.
A horn blared as a truck sped towards me, and I tried to stand up, but I tripped on the dress again.
I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for the inevitable impact, but someone yanked me out of the road.
"I know things must be terrible, but trust me, dying isn't the best way out." A rich baritone voice chuckled.
My amber eyes opened, and my breath hitched as my heart raced at the handsome man holding me against his chest and an umbrella over us. His slicked-back hair and eyes were darker than midnight, and his features put Greek gods to shame.
And he looked familiar.
"Are you lost, little bride? Do you need help returning to your groom?" His lips curled to a mocking smile, and my blood boiled.
"Thank you for saving me, but I don't need your help!" I scowled as I shrugged him off and began walking away.
"Really? That's too bad; I thought you would want revenge on your family and Thomas after what they did to you." He said, and I froze.
"I don't know what you're talking about." I lied, though worried about how this stranger knew about the wedding when it was strictly a private affair with only my family and Thomas' as guests.
"Did your heartbreak suddenly make you forget your family and Thomas? Don't tell me you're so easy to break." He chuckled.
"So easy to break!" I scowled and turned around to glare at him. "Its ex-fiancé and I no longer have a family! I don't know who you are and how you were privy to such a private event, but I will not let myself be humiliated twice today! You should be ashamed of yourself for picking on a woman who's in distress!"
"I like that fire. You're going to need it. Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Gordon Graff; it's a pleasure to meet your acquaintance, Ms Iris Adams." He said as he took my hand and kissed it.
My eyes widened, and I stumbled away from him.

On my birthday, he took her on vacation. On our anniversary, he brought her to our home and made love to her in our bed...

Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.
When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.
"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."
