Introduction

My boyfriend hated the new freshman, Lila.
She followed him everywhere from day one, and he’d complain to me nonstop.
“Want me to get her kicked out? My dad can write a check and make it happen.”
I laughed it off. “Cocky much?”
He nudged my shoulder. “You really not scared I’ll get taken?”
Please.
We were childhood sweethearts, bound by family and our upcoming competition duet.
Her cheap, desperate act? I never saw it as a threat.
I had no idea how wrong I was.

Chapter 1

My boyfriend hated the new freshman, Lila.

She followed him everywhere from day one, and he’d complain to me nonstop.

“Want me to get her kicked out? My dad can write a check and make it happen.”

I laughed it off. “Cocky much?”

He nudged my shoulder. “You really not scared I’ll get taken?”

Please.

We were childhood sweethearts, bound by family and our upcoming competition duet.

Her cheap, desperate act? I never saw it as a threat.

I had no idea how wrong I was.

There was exactly one month left until the semi-finals of the National Duo-Piano Competition.

As the undisputed seed players of Havenwood Conservatory of Music, my boyfriend Ethan and I were supposed to be in intense, closed-door preparation.

Yet, as I pushed open the door of the Studio, the sight before me shattered that illusion instantly.

The P&A Recital Studio we practiced in was a joint donation from by the our families, Pierce and Ashford families, an exclusive sanctuary meant only for me and my boyfriend.

However, I saw my boyfriend playing our engagement song with another woman.

The piece was Light & Dust. The composer was supposedly the elusive, highly acclaimed youth composer, Aurelian.

It was our secret weapon. Taking the gold medal at the nationals wasn't just about academic glory; it was the condition set by our families for our official engagement.

Sitting next to Ethan on our custom Steinway bench was Lila Voss, a freshman. Her fingers clumsily traced the core melody I had spent sleepless nights perfecting.

"Oh!" Lila gasped, snatching her hands back from the keys.

Her wide, doe-like eyes darted toward me, instantly brimming with forced panic. "Daphne! I'm so sorry, I was just asking Ethan for some advice..."

I looked at Ethan, waiting for him to explain. Instead, he didn't even shift his weight. He sat there, an embodiment of arrogant privilege, looking mildly annoyed by my arrival.

"Daphne, you're early," he said casually, glancing at his Rolex. "Just give us a minute. Lila is struggling with the phrasing in the bridge. Let her finish this section. You can wait on the couch."

Wait? For my boyfriend to teach my secret composition to another girl in my private studio?

I didn't waste breath on an argument. I walked straight past Lila, reached over the piano stand, and snatched the customized sheet music right in front of Ethan’s face.

"This is a closed studio, Lila," I said, my voice perfectly level. "And this is a restricted, unpublished score."

"Daphne, don't be so harsh," Ethan frowned. "She just admires Aurelian's work. It’s just music. Don't be so possessive."

"If she admires it, she can buy the published sheets when the competition is over," I replied, staring him down with absolute finality.

"Out." I spoke to Lila.

Lila bit her lip, shooting Ethan a helpless look before scurrying out of the room.

Later that evening, Ethan offered a half-hearted apology, but the blame somehow shifted back to me.

"You're making a massive deal out of nothing," he had muttered, running a hand through his hair. "She just reminds me of Iris, my poor dead younger sister, okay? She’s fragile. You’re an Ashford, you have everything. You need to be more magnanimous."

I thought my boundaries were made crystal clear that day. I was wrong.

Three days later, I opened the studio door for our scheduled rehearsal.

The exact same scene played out like a mocking rerun. Only this time, it was worse.

Ethan's arm was casually draped over the back of the piano bench, his body leaning dangerously close to Lila as he guided her wrists.

The jarring, chaotic sound of Lila butchering my intricate chord progression echoed off the acoustic panels.

This time, Lila didn't even pretend to jump up in shock.

She let her fingers linger on the keys, looking up at me with a microscopic flash of provocation hidden deep within her meek eyes. She then shrank toward Ethan’s shoulder.

"Ethan... maybe I should go. Daphne looks angry again," she whispered, her voice trembling perfectly on cue.

Ethan sighed heavily, rolling his eyes as if I was the unreasonable intruder. He wanted to play the noble, protective savior to a fragile girl, and he didn't care if he had to step on my dignity to do it.

"Daphne, just sit down and wait. We're almost done," he commanded. It wasn't a request. It was an order.

I didn't yell. My pride as Daphne Ashford would never allow me to engage in a pathetic tug-of-war over a man whose boundaries had completely rotted away.

I walked over, my heels clicking sharply, rhythmically against the hardwood floor. I stopped right beside the piano, looking down at the bench they were sharing, and then at the keys Lila had just touched.

"I don't think I'll be sitting anywhere," I said, my tone as cold as winter ice. "Actually, looking at this bench and those keys right now just makes me feel sick to my stomach."

Ethan’s handsome face darkened instantly. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"

I unzipped my bag, pulled out a large bottle of rubbing alcohol wipes, and tossed it onto the closed lid of the second piano.

"It means it's disgusting," I said, locking my gaze onto Lila’s pale face. "Before you step foot out of my studio, wipe down the bench and every single key you just touched. Disinfect it thoroughly."

Lila’s face drained of all color. The act broke. Tears instantly spilled over her eyelashes. She let out a choked sob, covered her face, and ran out of the studio.

"Lila! Wait!" Ethan yelled. He slammed his hands down on the Steinway keys, creating a hideous, violent discord.

He glared at me, his eyes full of pure resentment. "You are unbelievable, Daphne! You're vicious, cold-blooded, and completely unreasonable!" Then he turned and chased after her.

He left me standing alone in the studio our families built for us, abandoning our rehearsal, our piece, and our engagement.

I stood in the dead silence of the room.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed in my pocket.

It wasn't a text from Ethan. It was a notification from my secure encrypted email.

I opened it. It was a long, incredibly detailed professional review of Light & Dust.

“To Aurelian. I have been analyzing the harmonic architecture of your latest score. A conventional composer would write dense, aggressive chord progressions here to build tension. But your genius lies in absolute restraint. By systematically stripping away the instrumentation, the calculated silence you wrote into the third measure carries more weight than any note could. It is a brilliant, agonizing depiction of suffocating under expectations. A masterclass in compositional control.”

I read the words twice, my heart giving a rare, genuine skip.

This person completely understood my soul. They saw right through the ink and paper, deciphering the exact, suffocating emotion I felt when arranging those chords. They understood the music better than Ethan ever had in the past six months of practice.

Yeah, I didn't tell anyone — I'm Aurelian.

I scrolled down to see the sender’s signature.

Caleb Vaughn.

The piano prodigy from Briarwood Academy. The man known for being untouchable, cold, and utterly obsessed with perfection.

"Tell me to stop, and I will," he murmured against my ear. "But if you don't..."

I didn't tell him to stop.
Instead, my fingers curled into his shirt, clutching the fabric as though it was my only anchor. Something in him snapped—something he had been holding back for too long. His mouth found mine in a kiss that wasn't tender, but hungry, desperate.
I gasped into him, his hand sliding up to cup my jaw, holding me as if afraid I might vanish.
"You drive me insane," he breathed against my mouth, his lips trailing to my throat. "I can't lose you, Ella. Not you."
My head fell back, a soft sound escaping me as his fingers memorized my waist. My anger melted beneath his desperation.
"James..." I whispered, more plea than protest.
His hand caught mine, fingers threading together tightly. "I'll bring him back. I swear it. Just... don't turn away from me. Please."
The word please—low, ragged, almost broken—undid me more than anything else could have.
