Introduction

"Everyone in Cedar Hollow can tell you exactly what I did. I just can't."

Twelve years ago, Vanessa Dalton walked out of Larkspur Quarry alone, covered in her best friend Jo Calloway's blood. Jo's body was never found. Vanessa never remembered what happened. The evidence disappeared with the storm, but the town reached its own verdict long ago: she was guilty.

Now a renowned forensic genealogist who solves decades-old cold cases using DNA, Vanessa is forced to return home when her dying mother leaves her no choice. She's spent years helping strangers uncover the truth, while refusing to investigate the one mystery that destroyed her own life.

Sheriff Scott Bradley wants her gone. His father ruined his career trying to prove Vanessa murdered Jo, and Scott inherited both the badge and the hatred. But when someone steals a hidden box of evidence from the Calloway case, and Vanessa begins remembering fragments that contradict everything Cedar Hollow believes, a second car at the quarry, another voice calling her name, and Jo alive long after the moment she was supposed to have died, they're forced into an uneasy alliance.

As Vanessa and Scott reopen the town's darkest secret, every new clue exposes another lie. Someone has spent twelve years protecting the truth, and they'll kill to keep it buried.

Because Jo Calloway wasn't the only person who disappeared that night.

Chapter 1

POV: Vanessa

Pine trees swallow the last cell tower thirty miles outside Cedar Hollow, and Vanessa's phone drops to a single flickering bar right as her mother's cardiologist tries to call back. She lets it ring out. There's nothing left to say that the admission form on the passenger seat doesn't already say for her ,Dalton, Marianne. Age 61. Cardiac event, stable. Vanessa's hands stay steady on the wheel. That part, at least, still works.

The road narrows to one lane where the guardrail gives out, the same stretch that used to make her stomach drop when her father drove it too fast. She used to close her eyes here as a kid, daring herself to keep them shut until the trees opened up. She keeps them open now. She's spent twelve years training herself not to flinch from anything, and she isn't about to lose that on a road that doesn't even have the decency to have changed.

Cedar Hollow hasn't changed. That's the problem.

The mill's smokestack still cuts the skyline, dead and rust-streaked instead of running. Main Street still has the same faded awnings, half of them now stretched over empty storefronts instead of the hardware store and the bakery she remembers. The water tower still says COURAGE • COMMUNITY • CEDAR HOLLOW in paint that's peeling into something closer to a threat than a motto.

She pulls into the gas station on the edge of town because the tank's low and because stopping here, in the open, on her own terms, feels better than rolling into the hospital lot running on fumes and nerves both. She's barely got the nozzle in the tank before the attendant ,a heavyset man in his fifties she doesn't recognize, work shirt with somebody else's name stitched over the pocket ,stops mid-restock to stare at her like she's walked out of a photograph he's seen circulated too many times.

"Help you find something?" he asks, in a tone that makes clear he already knows exactly who she is and isn't asking to be helpful.

"Just gas," Vanessa says. Even. Flat. The voice she uses on skeptical detectives who don't believe a DNA match can be right. "Thanks."

He doesn't move. He watches her the way you'd watch something that might bite, and then he goes back inside without another word. Through the window, she sees him pick up the phone before she's even topped off the tank.

There it is. Twelve years and the reflex hasn't dulled a bit ,call somebody, tell them she's here, let the whole town know before she's even parked. She used to hate this feeling. Now it just feels like weather. You don't argue with rain. You put your head down and keep walking.

She screws the cap back on, gets in, pulls out onto the road ,and that's when she clocks the sedan.

Dark blue, parked across the street outside the shuttered pharmacy, engine running. It was there when she pulled in. It's still there now, nobody visibly inside that she can make out from this angle, exhaust curling faint against the cold morning air. Could be nothing. Cedar Hollow's the kind of town where people idle their trucks outside the diner for twenty minutes just to finish a phone call.

Could be nothing.

She doesn't believe that for a second, and she hates that some old, dormant part of her brain ,the part that used to lie awake convinced someone was standing outside her window ,has already filed the plate number away without her permission.

The hospital parking lot is half-full, mostly out-of-county plates belonging to people who, unlike Vanessa, have somewhere better to be than Cedar Hollow. She sits with the engine off for longer than she should, staring at the sliding doors, running through the version of this conversation where her mother is fine, sitting up, annoyed at the fuss. She knows better than to expect that. The nurse on the phone last night hadn't used the word stable like it meant anything good.

Inside, the smell hits her first ,antiseptic laid over old carpet, a smell every hospital seems to share no matter how small the town. She gives her mother's name at the desk, and the woman behind the counter ,mid-twenties, a stranger, thank God ,looks it up without blinking, prints a visitor badge, slides it across.

"Room 214," she says. "Down the hall, past the nurses' station."

Vanessa says thank you and means it, grateful for one single interaction in this town that hasn't required her to defend twelve years of her own existence.

It doesn't last.

She's three steps past the nurses' station when she feels it ,that particular quality of silence that isn't actually silence at all, just conversation stopping the instant she walks into range. Two nurses at the station, mid-chat, go quiet and then not-quite-quiet, the kind of hush that's really just a whisper wearing a smaller voice.

"...swear that's her..."

"...can't be, she wouldn't have the nerve—"

Vanessa keeps walking. Keeps her spine straight, her steps even, her face arranged into the same blank calm she wore into a dozen sheriff's departments over the years, handing over genetic genealogy reports to detectives who looked at her like she was performing a magic trick instead of doing math. She's good at this. She's had a lot of practice being stared at.

What she's not prepared for is her mother's face when she pushes open the door to 214.

Marianne Dalton looks smaller than Vanessa remembers, swallowed by the hospital bed, an IV taped to the back of one thin hand, color gone from her cheeks in a way that makes Vanessa's chest go tight and hollow at once. Twelve years, and the first thing Vanessa thinks, stupidly, uselessly, is that her mother's hair has gone almost entirely gray.

"Mom."

Her mother's eyes open slow, unfocused, then sharpen the moment they land on her daughter's face. For one second ,one single, unguarded second ,there's something like relief there. Then something more complicated moves in behind it.

"You came." Marianne's voice is thin, cracked at the edges, and her gaze flicks past Vanessa toward the door, then back again, quick and searching. "Who told you? Who called you?"

"The hospital called me, Mom. Last night. You had a heart attack." Vanessa keeps her voice gentle, pulling the visitor's chair close to the bed. "Nobody had to tell me anything else."

"No one else." Her mother repeats it slowly, like she's checking the words for a lie. "No one followed you in?"

"Followed me?" Vanessa frowns, sitting now, taking her mother's free hand carefully around the IV line. "Mom, I drove straight here. Nobody followed me anywhere."

Marianne's fingers curl weakly around hers, not the fierce grip Vanessa half expects from the fear written across her mother's face, just a small, tired pressure, like she doesn't have the strength for anything stronger.

"You shouldn't have had to drive at all," Marianne says instead, and it comes out almost like an apology, soft and strange. "I didn't want you finding out like this."

"Finding out what?" Vanessa leans in, some old instinct sharpening despite the exhaustion in her mother's face. "Mom, finding out what?"

Her mother's eyes drift, unfocused again, whatever she's about to say caught somewhere behind lips that have gone slack with fatigue. For a moment she just breathes, chest rising shallow, gaze drifting toward the ceiling like she's listening for something Vanessa can't hear.

"There's a folder," Marianne murmurs, so quiet Vanessa has to lean closer to catch it at all. "In the hall closet. Behind the—"

The door swings open before she can finish, a nurse stepping in briskly with a blood pressure cuff already in hand. "Sorry to interrupt ,just need to run vitals, won't take a minute."

Vanessa straightens back in her chair, throat tight, watching her mother's mouth still moving faintly under her breath, words too soft now to make out over the nurse's cheerful chatter about numbers and readings. By the time the cuff comes off and the nurse steps back, satisfied, Marianne's eyes have drifted shut, her breathing gone slow and even with sleep or exhaustion or both.

Vanessa sits there in the quiet, replaying the fragment she caught before the interruption ,there's a folder, in the hall closet, behind the ,and realizes, with her mother's hand gone slack in hers, that she has no idea what's hidden in that closet, or why her mother wanted her to know about it before she'd even asked.
