Chapter 1

I married Quentin Hale for strategic reasons. I chose him because he understood boundaries.

For three years, I never regretted that decision.

Then his new assistant started feeding him from her own spoon, taking my seat in his car, and appearing as his date at a charity auction.

The society reporters even began calling them a perfect match.

I gave my husband three chances to remember that I was his equal.

He wasted every one of them. Then he finally admitted that all he wanted was to teach me how a proper wife should behave.

Quentin thought the business alliance between our families would keep me by his side.

He forgot that I had been running Voss Group long before I became Mrs. Hale.

I had never needed a husband badly enough to let one teach me how to live.

The first time I met Nora Pike, she was holding out her own spoon so my husband could taste something from her plate.

I stopped at the entrance to the private dining room at Prytham Hall, my hand still resting on the doorknob.

Eight Cole Group executives were seated around the long table. Quentin sat at the far end, his suit jacket off and his sleeves rolled up.

The young woman beside him was sitting in the chair that was usually reserved for me.

No one had expected me.

My meeting with Voss Group's expansion team had ended earlier than planned.

One of our joint-venture directors mentioned that Quentin was having dinner with his management team upstairs, so I decided to stop by and say hello.

The moment I walked in, the conversation stopped.

Quentin was the first to look up.

Surprise flashed across his face before he gave me the familiar smile I had seen countless times during our three years of marriage.

That smile had helped him handle more than one difficult situation.

During the merger negotiations that brought us together, Quentin had been the only member of the Hale family who didn't mistake my quiet nature for weakness.

An older director had interrupted me three times during one meeting.

Quentin simply pushed the financial report back toward me and said, "Ms. Voss was speaking."

He hadn't stepped in because I needed his help.

I was perfectly capable of handling the situation myself. He had simply understood that everyone deserved to be heard.

Two months later, when our families proposed a marriage between us, I agreed to meet him privately before making a decision.

We discussed our schedules, personal expectations, property arrangements, children, and even the possibility that we might never fall in love.

Quentin listened without trying to impress me.

"I don't need a wife who gives up her own life to fit into mine," he told me. "I want a partner who has a life of her own."

That was what convinced me to marry him.

Not his family name. Not his money.

"Zora. I thought your meeting would run late."

"That's what I thought too."

I greeted the executives around the table by name.

The sales director sitting beside the young woman cleared his throat and gestured toward the empty chair on Quentin's other side.

"Ms. Pike, this is Mrs. Hale."

The woman finally stood up.

She looked about twenty-three, with shiny blonde hair and a bright smile.

She had the kind of innocent expression that made it difficult to tell whether she was genuinely harmless or simply good at pretending.

"Mrs. Hale, it's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Nora Pike, Mr. Hale's new executive assistant."

"Zora is fine."

It wasn't really fine. But I wanted to see how she would handle the invitation.

I took my seat, and the conversation slowly picked up again.

Nora had scooped up a bite of risotto and held it out to Quentin on her spoon.

He hesitated for a moment, then leaned forward and took the bite.

I watched him accept food from her spoon without a second thought.

Quentin had always been particular about personal space. He disliked sharing utensils, crowded elevators, and strangers touching his belongings.

On our third date, he had even wiped down the armrest of a restaurant chair before sitting down.

His attention to personal boundaries had been one of the reasons I agreed to marry him when our families proposed joining the Hale and Voss business empires.

I respected clear boundaries.

So did he.

Or at least, that was what I had believed.

From my seat, I could clearly see the presentation screen at the other end of the room.

A sales forecast was still displayed, and several of the figures were obviously wrong.

While Nora was busy telling Quentin about the restaurant's wine selection, I turned to the regional vice president and asked why his second-quarter conversion estimates were higher than the results of every market test we'd conducted.

Within minutes, everyone was focused on the numbers.

The excuses became shorter, the discussion became more productive, and the team eventually agreed to revise the forecast.

By then, Nora had stopped smiling.

That caught my attention.

A server soon brought over a platter of chilled shrimp.

Nora picked one up, turned it around in her fingers, and gave a little laugh.

"I can never get these open without making a mess."

As she spoke, she glanced at Quentin.

He hesitated for a moment.

Then he put on a pair of disposable gloves, peeled the shrimp neatly, and placed it on her plate.

Under the table, I took out my phone and sent a message to our housekeeper.

[Please buy ten pounds of fresh shrimp. Cook them and leave everything on the dining table.]

Ms. Yarrow replied with a question mark.

I sent back one word.

[Tonight.]

Across the table, Nora started talking again.

"You're so lucky, Zora. Mr. Hale is always busy working, but you get to enjoy the life he's built. Women like you really have it easy. Some of us actually have to work for a living."

Two executives lowered their glasses at almost the same time.

I rested my hand beside my plate.

"You're new here, aren't you?"

Her smile faltered.

"Excuse me?"

"That's the nicest explanation I can think of for what you just said."

Her cheeks turned red beneath her makeup.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend you. I'm just a very straightforward person. Looking at your clothes and your bag, I assumed Mr. Hale liked taking care of you. He works so hard for everything he has."

I almost admired her confidence.

It took quite a bit of nerve to insult someone while sitting at a table full of executives who knew exactly who that person was.

Fortunately, the product director spoke before I had to respond.

"Ms. Voss is the chairwoman and CEO of Voss Group," he explained. "This restaurant is part of a property owned by her company. Half the people sitting at this table report to her through the joint venture."

Nora immediately turned to Quentin.

Her expression suggested that he had deliberately kept my identity from her just so she could embarrass herself.

Quentin didn't correct her assumption.

Instead, he gave her a firm look.

"Apologize to Zora. And next time, pay more attention before making comments about things you don't understand."

"I'm sorry," Nora said quietly.

I stood up.

"Enjoy your dinner. My team is waiting for me downstairs."

Quentin started to rise with me, but I placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Finish your meal. I'll see you at home."

He studied my face as if trying to figure out whether I was upset.

I smiled and left before he could ask.

I wasn't angry.

Not yet.

I was just filing it away in my mind.

"Eyes up here," he said.

My gaze snapped to his. He was smiling, causing my heart to skip a painful beat. Before I could respond, the music began, and my body instinctively reacted to the sweet melody.

The crowd gasped as Lex pulled me into a more intimate position, his hands roaming over my body in a seductive manner.

The experience was both terrifying and magical, allowing me to feel every longing emotion through the dance.

I soon found myself lost in his arms.

When the music finally stopped, my arms were wrapped around his neck, his hands resting on my back, our noses almost touching. He gazed deeply into my eyes.

The ballroom fell silent.

Was he about to kiss me?
