Chapter 1
Selena pov
The truck comes to a halt, and my body rolls into someone else besides me. I'm too weak to move and can hardly open my eyes from the swelling in my face. There are some voices outside. I know it's the king's men, and I guess we have arrived at his kingdom.
The doors back in the truck open, loud screams cut through the silence before bodies are dragged out of the truck. Hands grab me, lifting my body and tossing me to the ground. Hitting the hard concrete with a thud, I bite my tongue to prevent myself from making any sound when pain from the impact courses through my body.
Blood oozes out of my tongue, and I spit it out in front of me. Blood pours down my jaw, and I'm too hurt to even try and wipe it off. Listening to the surroundings, I know we were about fifteen people on the truck, and I heard more than one truck when we arrived here.
"Get up on your feet, rogue!" A guard stops by my body and kicks me in my stomach. All air leaves my lungs, and I have to clutch my arms around my stomach in pain. Trying to open my eyes, I look around, and in the corner of my eyes, I see a gorgeous man in a dark grey suit walking closer to us.
My surroundings fade away for a moment when I just look at his muscular body walking closer to where we are, I have a feeling I know who it is!
He has three more men beside him and by the aura surrounding him, I can already guess who he is and the men beside him. I try to take a deep breath and calm my racing heart, I need to stay calm no matter what happens.
Moving my body, I sit up, leaning forward and keeping my head down. Whatever happens, my true identity can't be revealed.
The man walks closer, and I try to block his presence out of my mind when my heart beats frantically in my chest and hammers hard against my rib cage. Taking a deep breath, I know they will pick up my heart rate if I don't keep it steady.
His feet walk closer to where I am sitting on the ground before he stops a bit in front of us. I just breathe slowly and focus on keeping my head low, hoping he won't notice me.
"Is this all?" He asks in a dark masculine voice that sends a chill through my body and makes my hair stand on my arms. That's all I need to know, now I'm sure it's him. I will never forget his voice as long as I live... My mate!
"Yes, my king," comes a guard's voice, and I beg in my head he won't notice me.
Keeping my eyes locked on the ground, I wait for what's to come, the moment of silence feels like an eternity.
"Take them to the dungeons and start to interrogate them!" He orders, and a shaky breath leaves my lips when guards start to drag people down a stair. I know it won't be easy with the interrogation, but at least the guards will handle it and not him.
A pair of arms come and grab me before I'm being dragged over to the stairs on the gravel walk, he doesn't stop and my body bounces down every step. I'm already badly beaten up and for every step down the stairs, pain almost takes over my last restraint before I succumb under it, all I can do is try to hold my whimpers in. I will not give them that kind of satisfaction to see me break.
Reaching the last step, the guard drags me inside and I have to try and breathe through the bad stench of blood and body fluids that hits my nose the moment we come inside the building. Knowing what pain and suffering they execute on their prisoners here, I'm sure it's not better once I'm inside the cell.
The guard stops outside a cell and opens the door before he tosses me inside. Landing on the floor in a pile, smacking my head on the hard concrete, black dots start to dance in front of my eyes. My head cracks by the impact, and a warm substance runs to my cheek. I know I'm bleeding, and I can't do anything to stop it.
I have no energy left to move and my wolf is dormant from all this wolfsbane they have given us during the ride, I can't heal from my wounds, and black spots start to take over my vision. I'm too hurt and can't fight it right now! Just letting the darkness suck me under and take me away from this place, hoping to escape this excruciating pain.
Thinking of the moment I saw my mate all those years back. I followed a mouth-watering scent, and it led me to the cemetery, nothing could have prepared me for the sight in front of me.
It got stronger when I walked a bit further in, had a hard time understanding what it was that smelled so good, and I couldn’t resist following it into the dark cemetery.
That's when I saw him! He stood beside a new grave with his back towards me, I didn't need him to turn around for me to know it was my mate the second my eyes landed on his muscular back.
"Mate," I hear a voice in my head and I realize it's my wolf who just came to me, that's why I know for certain it's my mate I'm looking at.
I stopped in my tracks when I saw whose grave he stood by. Trying to understand how the moon goddess could have done this, how could she be this cruel?
Closing my eyes for a moment and cursing the moon goddess in my head! How could she do this?
My mate is the Alph King... Kian!
The king over all werewolves just lost his mate, they said she was pregnant and too weak, she couldn't survive a pregnancy, and died just a month into her pregnancy. He buried her yesterday, and here I am finding the king mourning his dead mate, I can't stay here.
I slowly walk backward without making any sound when I see him sniffing in the air and turn around. My heart stops beating for a second, and I wish I hadn't followed this scent in here, he needs to mourn in peace and I shouldn't be here.
His eyes meet mine, and my breath hitches in my body at the sight of him.
He is so handsome, tall, and very muscular. Black hair and in the darkness his amber eyes are glowing, he is breathtakingly handsome.
"MATE," the words just slip out of my lips before I can stop them, and I regret it the same second I take the words in my mouth.
"NO!" he roars, taking long strides toward me while I'm frozen in my spot. He comes to stand right in front of me, and I am too afraid to even breathe.
He grabs my chin in a firm grip and tilts my head to look at him, looking me deep in the eyes while sparks shoot out from his touch and I gasp from the feeling.
"You are not my mate, and you never will be!" He spits the words while his grip on my chin hardens.
His angry alpha aura slips out of him, washing over me in waves. Making it hard to breathe, and I can't get out of his grip when his amber eyes flicker to black ones for a second.
”You will leave my land and never come back! If you ever set your foot on my lands again, I will kill you and your whole family! Is that understood?" He booms with such hatred in his voice, and his angry alpha aura lays heavy over me, making it hard to stand.
I can't move from his hold on my chin, and I can't look in his eyes when I have to avert them from his hatred. The pain I feel almost has me falling to the ground, and I would have if his grip on my chin wasn’t that hard, a whimper leaves my lips, and a part of me wants to beg him to let go. But I can't form any words in my mouth, my tongue feels like it's glued inside my mouth, and I just stand there.
"I said, is that understood?" He barks, and a tear slips down my chin from his painful grip while my wolf whimpers in pain from his words. I have to hold back a sob, I know it won't make any difference for me.
His grip on my chin tightens, and I'm sure it will leave a blueprint from his fingers once he lets go of me. All I manage to do is nod while I have to turn my eyes back to look at him, hoping he will see my pain through my eyes and let go.
His hateful gaze meets mine, and a single tear slips down my chin, my bottom lip starts to tremble. There is no doubt the man hates me that much he wants to kill me, and I wouldn't have much to put up against him.
He growls, and I'm sure he is about to rip my head off, but his grip on my chin suddenly disappears. I fall to my knees when he isn't holding me up any longer, trying to take deep breathes and gather myself from all this heartache when he stands over me with his tall masculine frame.
"Now get the fuck off my land!" He booms, his alpha command washes over me, hateful and dark when I can’t do anything else than obey. Even if it breaks my heart to be forced to leave my family and friends behind, I don't have any other choice.
I scramble to my feet and turn my head to meet his black eyes looking directly at me when his command starts to hurt in my stomach. I can't stay and beg him to not do this when my legs start to move on their own under his command and I begin to run.
