Introduction

Fourteen years. I guarded every line on the East Coast for Victoria's crime family. Six weeks. A young newcomer took away every ounce of my authority. Victoria said, "There's no need to be so sensitive." I understood her choice. I took off my ring in the council chamber, and walked away.

Chapter 1

In the third week after Lucas joined the Moretti family, Victoria lost focus during the routine briefing.

I was on page three when she cut me off: "Let's leave it at that for now."

I closed the file and said nothing. Fourteen years. This was the first time.

I had spent two days preparing that report. Quarterly data for the three East Coast channels, the personnel reshuffle plan for the Philly branch, the newly negotiated supply agreement in Boston. Every page had decision nodes for her, marked in red. She never needed me to explain things twice.

That day, her eyes were on me, but her mind was elsewhere.

I walked out of the office, stood in the hallway for about ten seconds, slipped the remaining seven pages back into my briefcase, returned to my own office, and reopened my afternoon schedule.

Three days later was Wednesday.

For eleven years, every Wednesday night, Victoria and I ate at the same restaurant. It wasn't a rule, no one demanded it; it just carried on that way. She initiated the first one, and then it became a routine. When a routine lasts long enough, it becomes something that no longer needs confirmation. I never thought to use a word to define it. It was just there.

At 4:40 PM that afternoon, my phone buzzed.

It was a message from Victoria's assistant. It said Victoria had a last-minute arrangement tonight. Wednesday dinner rescheduled. Time TBD.

Not from Victoria herself. From the assistant.

I put the phone back on the desk and kept reading documents. I stopped on page two, picked up the phone, and read the message again.

"Time TBD."

I had made the reservation, so I still went. I sat alone at that four-top table, ordered the usual two dishes, finished them both, paid the bill, and took a cab back.

The waiter knew me; he didn't say much.

The next morning, I bumped into Chen from the intel team in the hallway. He dropped a line, "Lucas and Victoria went to a private club in Manhattan last night." His tone was light, like he was talking about the weather. Then he walked away.

I said nothing.

I told myself this was Victoria evaluating a new asset. She was always like this. Every key figure brought into the family, she would personally take time to vet them. Private settings, informal contact. It was her habit. I had seen it more than once.

The explanation made perfect sense.

I believed it for about three days.

On the night of the third day, I worked late in the office. I reorganized the unfinished report, adding the data shifts across the East Coast lines since Lucas joined the family. The numbers themselves were fine. Channels operating normally, steady profits, no personnel anomalies.

But Lucas's name appeared in three internal communication logs. All within the past three weeks. All messages sent directly to Victoria's assistant through informal channels, bypassing me entirely.

I archived those three logs separately. No flags, no notes. I closed the files, turned off the lights, and went home.

I sat in my apartment for a long time that night.

Not out of anger. I learned how to handle anger a long time ago. Fourteen years. I’d seen every type of threat and competition. I knew how to deal with them, knew how to keep emotions from clouding my judgment.

It was because something was starting to feel wrong, and I hadn't yet figured out exactly what it was.

Victoria bringing in fresh blood wasn't rare. Giving newbies resources and opportunities was her style. She would bypass me on certain decisions and use her own channels—that had happened occasionally, and every time, she had her own logic.

But those three communication logs were different.

That wasn't about building a resource network for a newcomer. That was a systematic circumvention of an existing executive tier.

I ran this assessment through my head, pushed it down, and told myself to watch the trends for another week before doing anything.

Rationally, I knew this was the right call.

But that dinner, eaten alone, was still sitting in a corner of my mind. Quiet, not saying a word, just sitting there.

Week four. The changes became more concrete.

Lucas started showing up at meetings he had no business attending. Nothing official, no one altered the attendance sheets. He just appeared, sitting in the back, like an observer. The first time, I assumed it was a temporary arrangement by Victoria, and paid it no mind. The second time, I started paying attention to where he sat, his timing walking through the door, the people he stared at during the meetings.

He wasn't observing the content. He was observing the people.

The guy was mapping the room.

I tucked that assessment away and said nothing to anyone.

During an intel team meeting, right after my briefing, Old Peter casually asked: "Does Lucas have any thoughts on this number?"

Old Peter had been with me for six years.

I looked at him, said nothing, flipped to the next page, and kept talking.

After the meeting ended, I was the only one left in the hallway.

I stood there for a while.

I was no longer using the "Victoria evaluating a new asset" narrative.

Not because it was invalid, but because it couldn't explain Old Peter's question. Evaluating a new asset was Victoria's move. But Old Peter's question was the result of a penetration Lucas had already completed.

The time gap between these two things was only three weeks.

Three weeks. From a newly inducted member, to making a core intel team member automatically add his name as a frame of reference before a briefing.

I thought in the hallway for about two minutes.

Then I went back to the office, opened the files, and started re-combing through every time and occasion Lucas had appeared over the past three weeks.

Not out of suspicion—at least, that's what I told myself at the time.

It was because I needed to know if this speed was organic, or engineered.

There was a fundamental difference between the two.

If it was organic, Victoria was simply giving a capable newcomer room to maneuver, and I needed to re-evaluate my place in her judgment system.

If it was engineered, the problem wasn't with Victoria.

I spent the whole night compiling that timeline. By the time I put my pen down, it was nearly dawn outside the window.

I didn't draw a conclusion immediately, but I printed the timeline out and locked it in a drawer where only I knew the code.

For future use.

Week five.

During a sit-down meeting, in front of three people, Victoria listened to Lucas's input on the New Jersey channel first, before turning to me and asking for my take.

The order was new. It had never been this order before.

I gave her my opinion, which partially conflicted with Lucas's direction. She listened, nodded, and said, "Both approaches make sense, let me think on it," and then closed the topic.

"Both approaches make sense."

In fourteen years, she had never used that phrasing. She either adopted, vetoed, or demanded more data. She didn't say "both make sense." That phrase was reserved for issues she hadn't figured out yet but needed to shelve temporarily. It didn't mean both directions were good; it meant: I'm going to decide this myself.

If Lucas hadn't been in the room, she would have given me her ruling directly.

I logged this detail in my mind, went back to the office, took that timeline out of the drawer, and added a line at the very bottom.

Put it back. Locked it.

I didn't work late that night.

I sat in my apartment and ran through every detail of the past five weeks from the top. I tried to stay objective, tried to analyze it like a situation that had nothing to do with me.

But that dinner was still there. Forty minutes, alone, in that restaurant.

I had no way of making it have nothing to do with me.

I told myself, give it one more week.

One more week, and if it's still heading in this direction, I need to start making other preparations.

Not for a counterattack. For a contingency.

I kept a very clear distinction between the two.

At least back then, I still kept it clear.

Dear readers, this novel is coming to an end soon. I highly recommend another fantastic story of the same genre:

I’d appreciate all your support, thank you so much!
From first crush to wedding vows, George Capulet and I had been inseparable. But in our seventh year of marriage, he began an affair with his secretary.

On my birthday, he took her on vacation. On our anniversary, he brought her to our home and made love to her in our bed...

Heartbroken, I tricked him into signing divorce papers.

George remained unconcerned, convinced I would never leave him.

His deceptions continued until the day the divorce was finalized. I threw the papers in his face: "George Capulet, from this moment on, get out of my life!"

Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.

When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.

"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"

George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"

"I'm afraid that's impossible."

Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."

Princess Ellie, the woman who had tormented me for years, slapped her hands over her mouth to hide her cruel laughter. She was supposed to marry the Beast. Now, I was the lamb being sent to the slaughter in her place.

They say King Liam drinks the blood of his enemies. They say he is more monster than man. And now, I have to walk into his bedroom, wearing the Princess's silk gown, and pray he doesn't tear me apart.

I looked at the King, tears streaming down my face. "I'll do it," I whispered, my voice trembling. "But my mother must be safe."

I sold my body and soul to a monster to save her. But when the carriage door opened and I finally looked into the Beast's golden eyes, I realized the terrifying truth...
