Melisa falls in love with Jack who is quiet, cold, mysterious and expressionless. In order to try to get Jack's attention and love, she is willing to take terrible risks that could threaten her life due to the terrible power that Jack Louis has.

Chapter 1

With that he crawled...

Greenville, South Carolina

November 19, 2008

This night felt very tense, the strong wind blew and blew away the dry leaves. Black clouds began to cover the moonlight. It is said that at night mysterious wild animals often appear that enter people's homes, acting strangely and often imitating human voices.

At the Louis family residence, there was the melodious sound of the piano being played by the nimble hands of a boy who was known as a musical genius. On the warm carpet, his two cousins looked engrossed in watching his little concert.

The legendary song Fur Elise can be heard filling the classic style rooms of this castle-like house. A boy named Jimmy recorded the small concert with a handycam. Meanwhile his younger sister, Naomi, looked serious while watching the concert while hugging her favorite baby doll.

"Good game, Jack. You're really good!" Aunt Jane said while smiling gently at Jack, who had been unable to change the expression on his face.

"When are my mom and dad coming home?"

"Your parent will come home the day after tomorrow, grandpa and grandma too. When everyone is together, let's celebrate your birthday together, okay?" Aunt Jane gently rubbed his head. But even though she had been promised like that, his mood couldn't change in a short time.

"What gift did you ask for from your dad?" Asked Jimmy, who still felt at home recording his cousin who was in a bad mood.

"Nothing."

"Why not? Last year your dad gave you a plane with the latest remote control and last year you bought a video game."

"That's because Jack is smart and a good boy, Jimmy!"

"If I study hard, will dad give me a gift too?" Jimmy asked. His question made his mother's face change. She looked at her son and her daughter who were looking at her expectantly. He was speechless and gave an answer that they could probably accept.

It has been two years since Carlos, their father, was in prison for a similar case of abuse. Even though she was sad because her two children had lost their father figure, on the one hand, she felt that their situation would be much safer if this man were not here.

"I will give you a gift if you study hard and get good grades in exams and school."

"How about my birthday present? I want video games too."

"You can borrow Jack's video game, next year you can ask for another gift!" She said as she walked towards the stairs to avoid more questions from her son.

Jimmy looked at his mother's back sadly, he knew that the promise of a gift was just a lie because every time his mother got money from grandfather and Jack's parents, his mother would definitely give the money to debt collectors who demanded that his father's debts be paid immediately.

Jack looked at his cousin with pity. Honestly, he didn't really want a birthday celebration because he knew it would hurt Jimmy and Naomi. He just wanted his father and mother to spend more time with him.

Braaakkk...

There was the sound of the door being kicked roughly. A man with a thick beard covering his face appeared while carrying a rifle. His eyes were bulging and red, his arrival like a wild animal immediately made the three children fall silent and not move.

It was difficult to recognize his face with that appearance, not to mention the stench and alcohol that was so strong from his body that it made Jack, who was sitting in front of the piano, try to hold his breath.

Dor...

The crazy man shot at a photo frame displayed above the fireplace. The frame split in two and fell to the floor. The three children shifted with their bodies shivering when they saw the figure walking past them towards the stairs with glaring red eyes and a grin like a wild wolf about to pounce on its prey.

His style is like an old cowboy who has lost at the gambling table, on his hand there is a scorpion tattoo. The man walked with his rifle through the stairs, his red eyes kept glancing around like someone who had lost his mind.

His steps stopped right in front of an old table with a row of antique vases on it. His eyes widened sharply as he looked at Jane who was standing shaking with her duster clutched tightly in her hand. The man took another step towards the poor woman, for a moment it seemed they were talking to each other. But, soon the atmosphere began to turn tense. Suddenly the crazy man hit Jane in the face until she fell on the floor.

Roughly, he started to look forceful as he kicked the poor woman's body and shouted loudly at her.

“Where did you hide that money, bastard?” He shouted viciously.

“I swear, Carlos. I don't know. Right now I don't have money anymore. I used all the money I had to pay your debts!" Jane said while groaning in pain.

“Insolent, how dare you deceive me. I know your uncle gives you money every week. Where did you hide that money, you damn bitch?” His screams became increasingly wild. His feet were still kicking the woman's body.

He didn't care even though the woman kept moaning. Occasionally the poor woman's hands tried to protect her body from his kicks. But it's useless, the energy she has is no match for this crazy man's energy.

"That's not my money Carlos, that's Jack's money. Yesterday, his mother asked me to save the money for Jack's needs."

"I don't care, you give me the money now or I will kill you and your two children, hurry up...!"

“Please Carlos, Don't do that to your children!” Said the woman while crying hysterically.

"If you don't want to die, now quickly give me the money, hurry up...!"

“I can't, Carlos! You've already spent too much money, now I won't give it to you anymore.”

“You damn slut…! You'd rather die, huh...?” He shouted angrily, he kicked the woman's weak body until she tumbled down the stairs.

"Mommy…!" Naomi screamed when she saw her mother who had fallen unconscious with her head covered in blood.

"Why did you do that to mommy, daddy?" Naomi asked while crying after she realized that this man was her father.

“Come here, Naomi!”

“No way! You're evil, I hate you, Daddy. Why did you hurt mommy?”

“Who is bad? It's all of you who are mean to me. You and your mommy are the same, you're all useless...!” He shouted.

Dor...

He fired a shot straight into the right side of the little girl's stomach. Naomi fell to her knees, and fresh blood began to flow profusely from her stomach. The little girl was dying, her eyes wide with pain. This man was not satisfied to see that his daughter was still alive, once again, he fired a shot aiming at the dying little girl's head.

"No, dad...!" Seeing that his younger sister was about to be killed before his eyes, Jimmy tried to help his sister. The handycam in his hand fell on the red carpet. The handycam was still on and recorded images and the faint sound of screams.

Jack, who was frightened, couldn't do anything to help his two cousins. He just hid under the piano table while peeking through the gaps.

The man was becoming increasingly reckless. After Naomi, now it was Jimmy's turn to be cruelly slaughtered. The poor boy was not immediately killed like his younger sister, but his head was pulled and smashed repeatedly against the wall. Fresh blood flowed from his head.

“P-please forgive m-me, daddy-” Jimmy whimpered with all his remaining strength. His voice grew weaker with every word he spoke.

The situation became even more terrifying when this crazy man started skinning Jimmy who was still alive, the poor boy screamed in excruciating pain, but he just laughed like a devil.

Jack was starting to become unable to bear the horrific sight before his eyes. He wanted to scream, but he was afraid that the same thing would happen to him. He was forced to remain silent, hoping that his uncle would leave soon. A few moments later, Jane, who had fainted, began to regain consciousness. Seeing her two children die horribly near her, she immediately screamed hysterically.

"No…! Oh my God, what are you doing? You devil...! You're a damned devil, Carlos...!”

Her weak body slowly crawled towards the body of her daughter, Naomi. Her hand reached out weakly, trying to touch Naomi's blood-stained cheek.

“Shut up, damn witch! You damn witch family, you messed everything up. Now it's your turn to go to hell...!" The man forcibly pulled Jane's body away from Naomi's corpse. He took a bottle filled with petrol and doused the woman's body with petrol.

He grinned, showing his brown teeth before pressing the lighter he took from his trouser pocket.

"Aaaaghhh..."

The fire spread very quickly and burned Jane's body. She floundered trying to extinguish the fire that was burning on her body.

Tit…tit…tit…

There was the sound of the handycam on the carpet starting to run out of battery. Realizing that he was going to get into trouble, Jack tried. Jack stretched out his hand and tried to grab the handycam which continued to make the marking sound.

"Mommy, Daddy, I'm so scared."

I was sent to her.
To watch her. To protect her. And, when the order comes… to kill her.
My name is Keegan Caffery. I’m the Carter Mafia’s best hitman. I don’t miss. I don’t fail.
At least, I didn’t use to.
I don’t know what it is about her that got to me first—her mouth, her mind, or the way she looks at me like I’m not what she should fear.
I’ve had a gun to her head since I walked into her life.
She knows it.
And she still doesn’t run.
She just watches me back like she’s studying a problem she refuses to call impossible.
She’s the one variable I can’t control.
And God help me… I don’t want to.
I have an order. I have loyalty. I have a trigger.
But every time I imagine it—

Her or me. That’s the math.
It’s a deadly equation I don’t want to solve.

I’m not ordinary. I stopped pretending long ago.
My name is Maisie Seo. IQ 145. Clinical genius.
Which sounds impressive until you realize what it actually means: I don’t fit anywhere people expect me to.
I see patterns everywhere. Outcomes before they happen. People like equations I’ve already solved.
It gets lonely in a world you’ve already figured out.
So I dull myself down. Smoke the edges off. Pretend, badly, to be the kind of normal that lets people stay.
Then he walked in.
I knew what he was immediately. Dangerous. Intentional. Wrong in all the right ways.
I should be afraid of him.
I keep waiting for that to kick in.
Instead, I’m fascinated.
Because for the first time in my life… I’ve found something I can’t solve.
He is my deadly equation.
