PS Gyllenhaal · Ongoing · 68.9k Words
Introduction
Seeking an escape, she drowned her pain in reckless indulgence, only to wake up in the arms of Logan Grey, the dark, untouchable heir to one of the most feared Mafia empires. She had worshiped him from afar for years, but after taking her innocence, he left her with nothing but a cold shoulder.
Determined to forget him, Vera tried to move on. But fate had other plans. A missed period led to a devastating revelation, and a family who would rather erase the problem than endure a blood entanglement with the notorious Grey heathens.
But Vera wanted to keep her baby, so with no other options, she ran to Logan, the very man her family wanted her to stay away from. Logan, however, had his own secrets, the one rule his father insisted on: never sire a child out of wedlock.
This meant that Vera's pregnancy could cost him everything, his position, inheritance, and freedom. Logan had no intention of being forced to marry her.
But what he didn’t expect was another threat lurking in the shadows, his estranged brother. A man just as powerful and dangerous, eager to claim what Logan refused. Vera soon found herself not only a mother to a Mafia heir but also at the center of a battle between two men who had been feuding since birth.
Chapter 1
VERA SINCLAIR
It began with a drizzle on my legs, face, and arms while my mind lingered in a sleepy fog. But the tapping continued, bringing me back to consciousness. My eyes opened, groggy and confused, only for my breath to catch at the sight that awaited me.
Water poured in from above, soaking my bed, blankets, and everything else before the roof collapsed with a deafening crash.
A scream tore through my throat as I leaped out of bed at the last second, only to slip and land miserably on my side as gallons of water crashed through the room. My heart raced as I got up, slipping and crashing back down before finally getting to my feet, adrenaline taking over as I stumbled out of the room.
"Noa!" My son's name was the only thing on my mind as I rushed to his room to find him sitting upright in his crib, his small face twisted with confusion.
“We have to get out of here!” My hands trembled as I picked him up, and a familiar voice broke through the rain at that moment.
“Miss! Are you okay?”
“No!” I yelled back, grabbing the nearest blanket and wrapping it around Noa and me. "My bedroom collapsed!" I yelled, unsure what to do as the floodwaters approached. Just then, a loud crack of thunder rumbled overhead, shaking the walls.
Lightning flashed, lighting up the room, and I pressed myself into a corner, a terrified sob ripping through my throat. I had always been terrified of lightning.
"Shh, baby, it's okay," I whispered as Noa cried. Just then, the man's voice rang out again, followed by a loud pounding on the door.
Sprinting to the front door, I waded through the now-flooded hallway, the rain still pouring in. Ripping the door open, the man's eyes widened as he took in the mess.
"The roof," I mumbled. "It just collapsed. There’s water everywhere.” I explained, my voice ringing hollow in my ears, and the man's expression turned grim as he asked for the items I wanted to save.
“You can stay at my place tonight. We’ll figure this out in the morning," he said, and my mind spun, not knowing what to do. My clothing and other belongings were floating in the flood. There was nothing to save.
"Noa's things," I finally said, pointing to his small stash of blankets and clothes that were still dry for the time being, and the man quickly gathered whatever he could while I tried to keep my baby calm.
He threw the bags over his shoulder and grabbed the blankets before turning toward me. “Let’s go. Come on.” He said, and I moved toward the door. But as I opened the door further, a chill ran through my body, not from the rain, but from the voice in my head reminding me I didn't know this man.
It was true. I had only exchanged one greeting with him when Noa and I arrived two days before. Every instinct told me that this was reckless, perhaps even dangerous. But what options did I have? The house was destroyed, and I had nowhere to go.
As if the man could read my mind, he introduced himself as Timothee, and before I could respond, he promised he wouldn't hurt us. So I forced the doubts down and took another step, but I paused again the moment I stepped onto the porch at the scene that greeted me.
Six black SUVs lined up like predators waiting to strike, and then, as if on cue, the doors flew open. A scream ripped through my throat, instinct propelling me forward as I made the fastest turn of my life.
Tim stumbled out behind me, perplexed when he saw me running. He said something. But the sound of car doors slamming shut, followed by boots hitting the ground, drowned out his words. I screamed at him to run, to save himself, as I grabbed him by the arm, pushed him back into the house, and slammed the door shut.
"Who are they? What’s happening?” He yelled, fumbling to push a chair against the door, but I told him there was no time for that, darting toward the window in the back of the house. The window was too high to jump through safely, but it was our only way out. So I wrenched it open just as the deafening bang of the front door being kicked in echoed throughout the house.
The wind and rain beat down on my face, but I couldn't feel or hear anything over my heartbeat pounding against my ears.
“We have to go! Timothee, come on!”
With my arms firmly wrapped around my son, I thrust myself through the small window, my eyes fluttering shut as I fell, bracing for the impact.
We crashed, and a puddle beneath us broke our fall, but it was far from gentle.
Pain erupted from my side, and my head snapped back, disorienting me, but my grip on my son tightened instinctively as I struggled to get up.
"Miss!" Tim's frantic voice echoed above me before the sound of bullets pierced the night, and my body reacted before my mind as I scrambled to my feet, my legs wobbling beneath me while my baby's terrified cries broke through the storm. "Give me the baby!" Tim yelled with extended arms, his face pale and drenched. But I didn't.
"No!" I choked out, stumbling forward. I couldn't let go of him, and a wall appeared out of nowhere. The impact sent me to my knees, a sharp pain shooting toward my hip, but I didn't have time to pay attention to it. So I got up just as Tim grabbed my arm and pulled me up, dragging me forward. “The car! We need to get to the car!” he yelled, but I was not listening. All I could hear was a voice screaming: He found us. He found us. How did he find us?
“Get in! Get in now!” His yell jolted me back, and I immediately jumped into the car.
Noa's wails were deafening, his fingers clutching my shirt as if he understood the danger we were in. Tim rushed in and slammed the door before shoving the keys into the ignition. The engine roared to life, and the tires spun against the wet ground, but eventually took off.
However, soon, headlights pierced the darkness behind us. They were coming!
“Who are these people?!” Tim shouted in a shaking voice as he sped toward the gate. I first apologized for putting him in danger--I had jeopardized their lives by coming here. However, he ignored that, asking once more who the people were.
“The Mafia! My ex! My baby daddy wants me dead!”
“What?!”
I didn’t get the chance to explain as the car lurched violently with a deafening blast that ripped through the night, and the next thing, we were airborne.
I held my son close as the car flipped and whispered, "I'm so sorry." Everything spun up, down, sideways, in a sickening spiral before the startling crash, followed by the smell of burning metal and smoke... and then... nothing.

I Loved You in Silence, You Betrayed Me in French
At my birthday party, my husband whispered to his mistress in French that he missed her. His voice was low, but I heard it all—the black lingerie, the bit about how pregnancy makes you more sensitive. His French clients around us were laughing. He turned and put his arm around me, claiming he was just helping his clients come up with sweet nothings.
He doesn't know I understand every single word. Just like he doesn't know that inside my body, I'm carrying his other surprise. And his mistress—she's pregnant too. Two wombs, one secret.
Confrontation would be too cheap. Tears are worthless. I quietly started cataloging the hidden networks my father left behind, activating the Swiss accounts.
In seven days, Zoey Smith will cease to exist. And what will my husband's reaction be?
When I Disappeared, He Regretted It
The moment the screen lit up, my entire world came crashing down.
The woman on the bed was Calista - that girl who grew up with us since we were kids. And that hand caressing her skin was wearing the wedding ring I had personally put on Matteo's finger.
"I've missed you so much..."
"You drive me crazy, baby..."
Those sweet words I knew so well completely destroyed me.
Everyone said we were the perfect couple, but who knew this marriage was built on nothing but lies?
Since he's so good at acting, I guess it's time I gave him a show of my own. I'm going to make sure everyone sees what this "perfect husband" really is...
He Never Loved Me, Until I Left
I put away the divorce agreement with a wry smile.
When he and my son completely disappeared, he finally panicked.
Three months later .
He knelt down on the streets of Chicago in despair, begging me to remarry him.
My six-year-old son looked coldly at his biological father and said, "Get lost, you bad uncle! You don't deserve to be my dad!"
The Family Sacrifice
I simply said one word: "Okay."
My parents and Gilbert were stunned. They rushed to have me sign the voluntary donation form, afraid I’d change my mind.
Some days later, they sent me to the operating room.
Dad said, "Yvonne will finally be saved. We're so proud of you."
Mom said, "After the surgery, we'll make it up to you."
Gilbert looked tenderly at Yvonne and said, "When you're better, where should we travel?"
What they didn't know was that the day I agreed, I'd just received my diagnosis, stage four cancer. Three months to live.
As I lay on the cold operating table, as the anesthesia began to take effect, I only wanted to know one thing:
If I die on this operating table, will they regret it?
He Thought I'd Never Leave
When he said he was being bullied, I believed him. When he kissed me on that rooftop, I thought he felt the same. When he asked me to transfer schools with him, I said yes without hesitation.
Then I heard him bragging to his friends: "She'd save her first time for me. Hell, she'd still be thinking of me on her wedding night."
The bullying was staged. The kiss meant nothing. He just wanted me gone—so his new girl could feel more comfortable.
He thought I'd beg. He thought I'd cry. He thought I'd never actually leave.
I left the country.
And ran straight into his stepbrother.
I Died While They Threw Her a Party
Their real daughter came home. She'd only been back two years. That's all it took to erase twenty-four.
When kidnappers grabbed us, I used my body as a shield. They beat me until something inside me ruptured. I was dying from internal bleeding, but no one could tell.
My parents wouldn't even look at me. "This is your fault! None of this would've happened if it weren't for you!"
"Get downstairs and apologize to your sister. If you can't, pack your things and get out."
They threw her a party at a downtown hotel while I died alone in my room.
I thought they'd be relieved. Maybe even glad. I thought they'd just move on like I never existed.
But when they finally learned the truth, they fell apart.
Bury Me in His Regret
The kidnapper pressed the gun to my temple and asked, "Choose your wife or your sister-in-law?"
Zachary didn't hesitate. "Let Valerie go," he said.
He actually chose to save his sister-in-law! In that moment, even the baby in my belly seemed to stop kicking.
Later, they locked me in the basement. Drugs to delay labor were pumped into my veins over and over. Zachary wanted to save the "firstborn son" status for his sister-in-law's child.
When warm blood finally soaked through my skirt, I dialed the number I knew by heart with shaking hands.
"Zachary," I whispered into the phone, "our child... can't wait any longer."
The Kidney That Killed Me
A few months ago, my sister was hospitalized with kidney failure. The doctor said she needed a transplant. My family's first thought was me—the backup daughter they'd kept around all these years.
When my husband Allen took my hand with tears in his eyes and said, "Only you can save her," I agreed without hesitation.
When the doctor explained the surgical risks and potential complications, I smiled and nodded my understanding.
My parents said I'd finally learned what sisterly love meant.
Even Allen, who'd always been cold to me, held my hand gently and said, "The surgery's safe. You're so healthy, nothing will go wrong. When you recover, I'll take you to Hawaii."
But they don't know that no matter how the surgery goes, I won't be around to celebrate.
Because I just got my own test results—I have terminal brain cancer. I'm going to die anyway.
After the Affair: Falling into a Billionaire's Arms
From first crush to wedding vows, George Capulet and I had been inseparable. But in our seventh year of marriage, he began an affair with his secretary.
On my birthday, he took her on vacation. On our anniversary, he brought her to our home and made love to her in our bed...
Heartbroken, I tricked him into signing divorce papers.
George remained unconcerned, convinced I would never leave him.
His deceptions continued until the day the divorce was finalized. I threw the papers in his face: "George Capulet, from this moment on, get out of my life!"
Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.
When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.
"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."

But she's not. I can feel her excitement bubbling under my skin, while all I feel is dread.
We turn the corner, and the scent hits me like a punch to the chest—cinnamon and something impossibly warm. My eyes scan the room until they land on him. Tall. Commanding. Beautiful.
And then, just as quickly… he sees me.
His expression twists.
"Fuck no."
He turns—and runs.
