Married To Sleeping Billionaire
MCG5 55 · Ongoing · 32.9k Words
Introduction
Four years I sat beside Evanthe Blackwood’s bed. Keeping him alive while his family held their breath.
The marriage was a contract. A legal arrangement. Nothing more.
Nobody warned me that four years of silence could break a person open.
Nobody told me that loving a man who couldn’t reject you was the most dangerous kind of loving there was.
Then he woke up.
He looked at me like I was a stranger who had broken into his house.
To Evanthe I was an opportunist. A woman who had married a helpless billionaire for his name and his money.
He decided who I was in the first five minutes and nothing I did was ever going to change that.
He kept me anyway. For the heir clause. For the contract. Never for me.
I should have left then.
Instead I stayed and I hoped and I let myself believe that maybe underneath all that coldness something real was trying to get out.
Then Sena came back. His first love. And I watched him look at her the way he had never once looked at me.
So I left.
No tears. No confrontation. Just his ring on the desk and my signature on the divorce papers.
What he didn’t know was that I didn’t leave alone.
Now he’s found me. Three years later. Standing at my door with regret all over his face and my daughter’s eyes staring back at him.
But is sorry ever really enough?
Chapter 1
Max’s Pov
Four years of my life were gone, and the first thing I saw when I came back was a stranger.
She was sitting beside my bed like she owned the chair. Reading, relaxed, completely unbothered by the fact that the man lying three feet away from her had just returned from the edge of death.
She didn’t gasp. Didn’t drop her book. Didn’t call for anyone.
She just looked up, found my eyes, and said the two most unremarkable words in the English language.
“You’re awake.”
Like I had stepped out for coffee and come back twenty minutes late.
I didn’t know her face. Didn’t know her voice. Didn’t know the scar at the edge of her jaw or the way she held her book with her thumb still inside it like she fully intended to go back to reading once this interruption was handled.
Nothing about her was familiar, and yet she was sitting in my private hospital room at what appeared to be an ungodly hour of the morning, looking completely at home.
My body was stiff and heavy, like waking up trapped inside a suit made of lead. The steady hum of the monitors was the only other sound in the dim room.
“Water,” I said. My voice came out wrecked, four years of silence packed into one word.
She already had the cup ready.
That was the first thing that should have told me something. She didn’t reach for it or look around for it. It was just there in her hand before I finished asking, the straw angled toward me like she had done this exact thing so many times her body no longer needed instruction.
I drank, she waited.
No chatter, no nervous energy, no performance of concern for a man she apparently didn’t find it necessary to introduce herself to unprompted.
“Who are you?” I asked.
“Evi.” She set the cup down. “My name is Evi.”
“Why are you in my room?”
She looked at me for a moment, steady, measuring, the look of a woman deciding how to hand someone news they aren’t going to like.
“I’m your wife,” she said.
The room was very quiet after that.
I waited for the rest of it, the laugh, the correction, the “just kidding, I’m actually your nurse.”
None of it came.
She just sat there with her book and her calm eyes and let the words stand exactly as she had placed them.
I looked at her properly for the first time, really looked, the way I look at something I’m trying to understand rather than someone I’m trying to know.
She let me do it without flinching.
She put up no performances, no softening, no attempt to make herself more palatable under scrutiny.
Just a woman sitting in a chair letting a stranger examine her like she had already made her peace with far worse than this.
My family arrived within the hour.
My mother came in first with documents and rehearsed words and the particular expression of a woman delivering news she has been dreading for a very long time. Her eyes shifted nervously around the room before forcing a tense, rehearsed smile. She held a thick leather folder under her arm, full of legal papers signed while I was unconscious.
She confirmed everything, the marriage, the contract, the arrangements made on my behalf while I was absent from my own life. She spoke quickly, framing it all as a desperate necessity to protect the family estate while I lay helpless.
My uncle stood near the door and said nothing useful. He just kept his hands jammed deep into his pockets, watching me with cold, calculating eyes to see if my mind was as damaged as my body had been.
I listened to all of it without expression, the way I have always received information I intend to deal with on my own terms. I didn't interrupt my mother, nor did I acknowledge my uncle’s fake concern. I just memorized every word, filing it away for later.
When I asked them to leave, they left.
The door closed, and Evi was still in the chair.
She hadn’t moved during any of it. Hadn’t inserted herself into the conversation or looked to my family for backup. Hadn’t offered explanations or apologies or the kind of wide-eyed innocence people perform when they want you to believe them.
She just sat quietly like a woman with nothing to prove and nowhere urgent to be.
I looked at her across the room.
“You married a man in a coma,” I said.
“Yes.”
“For the estate.”
That one landed differently. Something crossed her face, there and gone so fast I nearly missed it. A subtle flicker of pain or annoyance in her eyes before she locked it down completely.
Then the composure was back, smooth and unbothered, and she looked at me with those steady eyes and said nothing to correct me.
“The contract is what it is,” she said instead.
There was no defense, and no explanation. She just let my assumption sit there between us and didn’t reach for it.
I had spent four years unconscious and thirty-two years before that learning how people behave when they want something from you.
I knew the shape of it, the softness, the calculated warmth, the way certain people make themselves easy to trust because trust is the fastest route to what they’re actually after. I had seen it in business associates, in opportunistic relatives, in women who thought they could maneuver their way into my life.
She didn’t feel like that. She didn't smell like ambition, and her silence didn't feel like a trap.
But I had just woken up, and my judgment wasn’t something I was ready to stake anything on yet.
“Then we understand each other,” I said.
She held my gaze for one long second.
Then she picked up her cold tea, stood, and walked out without another word.
No argument, no lingering, no backward glance at the door.
She had just gone, quietly and completely, like a woman who had been leaving rooms her whole life without anyone noticing.
The door clicked shut behind her.
I turned back to the ceiling and started calculating everything I had lost and everything I intended to take back.
“A wife I didn’t choose” was the least of my problems.
Or so I told myself.

It's the dog's fault, really.
If this untrained Great Dane I'm walking had any manners at all, I never would've ended up here:
With my leash wrapped around the most gorgeous man I've ever seen.
Lucky for me, the guy is a good sport about it.
(Although his joke that “Dogs take after their owners” hits a little too close to home when Rufus starts humping his leg.)
He leaves me with his business card and a smile that makes my knees weak.
I'm still pinching myself as me and the bestie resume our walk.
“Methinks you had a little crush on him,” she accuses.
Not thinking and a little flustered by the whole experience, I reply, “I’d wrap my legs around his waist tighter than that leash.”
THAT'S when she reveals that she'd been recording my response.
THAT'S when she gives me the most devilish grin I've ever seen and says, “You're welcome.”
And THAT'S when she hands me my phone and reveals...
She sent the recording to him.
My heart is in my throat as those three little dots appear…
Then a text.
“PROVE IT.”
