Introduction

I broke into the Morretti chapel to steal a ledger.

I walked out bound to an alpha.

When my brother’s gambling debt puts a target on his spine, I do what I’ve always done — survive smarter than the men who underestimate me. The Morretti syndicate hides their real accounts beneath holy ground, and I intend to use their secrets as leverage.

But beneath the chapel isn’t just a vault.

It’s a cage.

And inside it is Roman Varga — an alpha werewolf the Morrettis have been drugging, torturing, and using as their silent weapon. The moment I unlock the wrong door, something ancient and violent snaps into place between us.

The bond.

Now the mafia wants me erased. Roman wants blood. And the closer the full moon creeps, the more unstable he becomes — because the Morrettis weren’t just keeping him prisoner.

They were waiting for someone like me.

Vesper Arden isn’t a random thief.

My blood reacts to his.

My scent calms him.

And when he touches me, the mark burns like a promise.

I don’t know what’s more dangerous — the mafia hunting us….......

Or the way I’m starting to crave the alpha who calls me his.

Chapter 1

The Morrettis built their chapel on land that used to be a slaughterhouse.

I think that’s poetic.

Blood never really leaves a place. It seeps into the cracks. Waits. Remembers.

Tonight, I add my own sin to the foundation.

The air tastes like incense and old money as I slip through the side entrance, the lock yielding to my pick with a soft, intimate click. I don’t rush. Rushing is how you get caught. I move like I belong here — like I’m just another woman coming to kneel, to confess, to beg forgiveness.

I don’t believe in forgiveness.

I believe in leverage.

The stained-glass saints watch me cross the aisle, their painted eyes full of borrowed mercy. Candles flicker along the walls, casting gold light over marble floors so polished they reflect my shadow back at me.

Vesper Arden.

Thief. Sister. Survivor.

My brother’s face flashes in my mind — pale, drawn, terrified in a way he tries to hide from me. Gambling debt is a quiet killer. It starts with whispers and ends with broken kneecaps or shallow graves. The Morrettis don’t forgive what they’re owed.

And they are owed a lot.

I drop to my knees at the altar, bow my head like a penitent. Anyone watching would think I’m praying.

I slide my fingers beneath the embroidered cloth and feel along the underside of the marble until I find it — the small, almost imperceptible ridge carved into stone.

There.

I press.

A low mechanical hum vibrates beneath my palms. The altar shifts — barely — but enough. A section of stone glides aside, revealing a narrow staircase spiraling downward into darkness.

Holy ground above.

Something else below.

I stand slowly, my pulse steady but alert. The air rising from the opening is cooler, metallic… and threaded with something that makes the fine hairs on my arms lift.

Not mold.

Not dust.

Something wild.

I pull a penlight from my jacket and descend.

Each step is careful. Measured. The staircase curves deep beneath the chapel, and the walls change from ancient stone to reinforced steel. Cameras sit in the corners, but I looped the feed five minutes ago from a van three blocks away. They’re watching a ghost version of this stairwell.

I reach the bottom.

The space opens into a corridor lined with locked doors — private vaults, no doubt. Blackmail material. Accounts. Weapons. Insurance.

My target is the central records room. The ledger that holds every name the Morrettis own. Every secret they’ve purchased. Every life they can ruin.

I move toward it.

And then I hear it.

A sound.

Low. Ragged. Breathing that doesn’t belong in a room built of steel and silence.

I freeze.

It comes again — a strained inhale, followed by the faint scrape of metal against concrete.

I turn my light toward the end of the corridor.

There’s one door different from the others. Thicker. Reinforced. A faint red glow pulses above it like a heartbeat.

Curiosity is a flaw.

But instinct is survival.

I step closer.

The smell hits me first.

Iron. Sweat. And something else — something primal that wraps around my senses and squeezes. It’s not human. It’s not anything I can categorize neatly.

It feels like standing too close to a storm.

I swallow and lean toward the small reinforced window set into the door.

At first, I see nothing but shadow.

Then he moves.

Chains clink.

A massive figure shifts forward, and my light catches skin — bare, bruised, stretched over muscle carved like something out of myth. Dark hair falls into his face. His wrists are shackled in silver restraints bolted to the wall.

And his eyes—

They snap to mine.

Gold.

Not hazel. Not brown. Gold like molten metal under moonlight.

Every rational thought drains out of me.

He rises slowly, the chains straining. Even drugged — and I can see it now, the IV line trailing from his arm, the faint tremor beneath his skin — he radiates power. Caged violence. Coiled dominance.

He steps into the dim light fully.

A werewolf.

An alpha.

My breath catches before I can stop it.

His nostrils flare.

And then something changes.

His entire body goes still.

His gaze sharpens, not with rage… but recognition.

A low sound vibrates from his chest — not a growl. Not quite.

Something deeper.

Something claiming.

My skin prickles.

“No,” I whisper, though I don’t know what I’m denying.

His eyes track over me slowly, deliberately, like he’s memorizing every inch through steel and glass.

Then he inhales again.

The chains groan as he steps closer, until only inches of reinforced barrier separate us.

When he speaks, his voice is rough, like it’s been unused for too long.

“Mine.”

The word hits me like a physical blow.

Heat blooms low in my stomach — unwanted, unwelcome, undeniable.

“This is insane,” I breathe.

But I don’t step back.

His fingers curl around the chains, and the silver hisses faintly against his skin. He doesn’t flinch.

“You opened the door,” he says softly.

I shake my head. “I didn’t—”

A loud click echoes behind me.

Cold metal presses against the base of my skull.

“Well,” a familiar smooth voice says from the darkness, “this is interesting.”

My blood turns to ice.

I don’t have to turn to know who it is.

Morretti.

“And here I thought,” he continues calmly, “you were just stealing paper, Miss Arden.”

The alpha’s growl deepens behind the door, the sound vibrating through the steel like an approaching quake.

The gun presses harder into my skin.

“You’ve just triggered something you don’t understand.”

The red light above the cell begins flashing faster.

Inside the cage, the alpha smiles.

And the chains start to crack.

I never applied to the Academy for Magical Beings and Creatures.

Which is why it was more than a little confusing when a letter arrived with my name already printed on a schedule, a dorm waiting, and classes picked out as if someone knew me better than I knew myself. Everyone knows the Academy, it’s where witches sharpen their spells, shifters master their forms, and every kind of magical creature learns to control their gifts.

Everyone except me.

I don’t even know what I am. No shifting, no magic tricks, nothing. Just a girl surrounded by people who can fly, conjure fire, or heal with a touch. So I sit through classes pretending I belong, and I listen hard for any clue that might tell me what’s hidden in my blood.

The only person more curious than me is Blake Nyvas, tall, golden-eyed, and very much a Dragon. People whisper that he’s dangerous, warn me to keep my distance. But Blake seems determined to solve the mystery of me, and somehow I trust him more than anyone else.

Maybe it’s reckless. Maybe it’s dangerous.

But when everyone else looks at me like I don’t belong, Blake looks at me like I’m a riddle worth solving.
