Introduction
Luna Vale has one goal: win the Moon Games.
Five years ago, the Games took her brother, Victor, in front of fifty thousand silent spectators. They called it an accident. Luna has never believed it.
Now she's fast enough to win and stubborn enough to try. She'll burn the whole world down for the truth.
Then she meets Cassian Veyre.
Vampire prince. Undefeated champion. A man raised to believe werewolves are nothing but trouble. One breath of her scent, and the ice in his eyes turns to fire.
Mate.
It's impossible. Wolves and vampires have hated each other for centuries. One wrong touch could start a war.
But when a silver bolt carved with her dead brother's number nearly kills her, Luna learns the truth is worse than she imagined. Her mother was a vampire. Her blood is something the world has never seen. And the people who want it are already close.
Victor's grave is empty. A guard is dead. A king looks at Luna like he's seeing a ghost. And the one person she can't stop thinking about is the boy she's forbidden to love.
Two kingdoms on the brink of war. A killer hiding in plain sight. A love that could save everything or destroy it.
Some races are run for gold.
This one is run for a heart, a truth, and a future.
Chapter 1
Luna's POV
Five years ago, fifty thousand people stopped breathing at the same time.
I was in the stands, sixteen years old, holding a paper banner with my brother's number painted on it in glitter. Victor had one hundred meters left. He was ahead. He was always ahead.
Then he fell.
No scream. No crash. Just a sound I still hear in my sleep, the sound of an entire stadium going silent at once, like someone had reached up and switched off the world.
They told me it was an accident.
I've been running ever since, because running is the only thing that has ever made that silence quiet down.
The forest was a blur of black trunks and silver moonlight. Frost cracked under my sprint. My breath tore out in white ribbons, and my wolf paced beneath my skin, restless and hungry, begging me to run faster.
Behind me, boots pounded through the pines.
"Halt! Silvermoon wolf, halt!"
Not a chance.
I knew this trail better than my own heartbeat. Five years of predawn mornings, every stride run for Victor. Every root, every ditch, every place the ground dipped without warning.
But tonight I had done something stupid.
I'd lost track of time. I'd drifted past the old border stones that mark the edge of Silvermoon land, and without noticing, I had crossed into the vampire kingdom's private training grounds.
The vampires had arrived that afternoon for the Moon Games. Their royal guards had sealed off this entire stretch of forest, and any wolf caught inside would be treated as a spy.
Three of those guards were chasing me right now.
Everyone says vampires are faster than werewolves. Every pack elder. Every old story. Every smug vampire athlete on every broadcast. Fast. Flawless. Untouchable.
I kicked off a fallen log, cleared a ravine in one long stretched-out leap, and landed running.
Not tonight.
One guard cursed behind me. Three sets of footsteps became two, and then the trees tore open and I burst onto a wide field of pale grass and glowing white track lines.
I skidded to a stop, chest heaving.
The vampire training grounds spread out before me like something from a dream. Perfect oval tracks. Floodlights burning low. And beyond them, the Moon Stadium, rising against the night sky in pale stone and towering arches.
The place where champions were made.
The place where my brother died.
My throat tightened. For one heartbeat I forgot the guards, the danger, all of it. I just stood there, staring at the arch where Victor had walked out for the last time, grinning that crooked grin, and waved at me.
"You're a long way from home, wolf."
The voice came from directly behind my ear.
I spun. Nothing. Empty grass, empty track.
Then something shifted at the edge of my vision, and when I turned back, he was there, three feet away, as if he'd been standing there all along.
Tall. Black-haired. Dressed in dark training gear. His skin was so pale it seemed to glow under the floodlights, and his eyes were the color of winter ice.
He hadn't made a sound. Not a footstep. Not a breath.
"That's a neat trick," I said, forcing my voice steady.
"It isn't a trick."
"Then it's rude."
Something flickered across his face. Amusement, maybe. It was gone too fast to be sure.
"You crossed the border," he said. "The penalty is detention until the Council decides what to do with you."
"Is that what those guards are for?"
"They're for wolves who trespass." His gaze slid toward the trees. "You outran three of them."
"Two and a half. One gave up."
"He didn't give up. He stopped because I told him to."
That made me pause. "Why?"
"Because I wanted to see how far you'd go."
Every hair on my body rose. He wasn't just tall. He was still, in a way that silenced my wolf completely. Like standing in front of something that could break me without effort and simply hadn't decided to yet.
I knew that stillness. I'd watched it on television every season for three years.
"You're Cassian Veyre."
"And you're Rowan Vale's daughter." His eyes traveled over me, cool and unhurried. "The runner. They say you're fast."
"They say you're undefeated."
"I am."
"That must be exhausting."
The corner of his mouth lifted. "You're funny."
"And you're arrogant."
"Vampires aren't arrogant. We're simply correct."
"That's exactly what arrogant people say."
"Do you always talk this much to someone who could have you arrested?"
"Do you always sneak up on girls who are minding their own business?"
"You were trespassing."
"I was running."
"Then let's see it."
I blinked. "What?"
"Your pack teaches that vampires only look fast because we've spent centuries avoiding real competition." His voice dropped, soft and dangerous. "That's what you believe, isn't it?"
"I never said that."
"You didn't have to."
He was right, which made me want to hit him.
"Fine. Yes. That's what I think."
"Then prove it. One lap. If you finish ahead of me, you walk out of here and I never mention this to the Council."
"And if I lose?"
"You spend the night in a vampire cell, and I tell the whole delegation the great Silvermoon runner couldn't last one minute beside me."
It was reckless. It was insane. It was exactly the kind of thing my father would ground me for.
My wolf lifted her head and grinned.
"Deal."
We walked to the starting line side by side. I could hear my own pulse, and I hated that I could also feel every inch of space between us, a strange electric hum I couldn't explain.
I ignored it.
I dropped into a crouch. Cassian did the same, effortless and lethal, his fingertips barely brushing the chalk.
"On my count," he said.
"You don't get to count."
"Then on yours."
One breath. Two.
For Victor.
"Go!"
The world exploded.
My feet hit the track and I flew. Wind tore at my braid. The floodlights smeared into long golden streaks. I gave everything, every drop of speed, every scrap of fury, every stubborn ache I'd carried for five years.
And Cassian was right there.
Not ahead. Not behind. Beside me, matching me stride for stride, black hair whipping back from his face. He wasn't even breathing hard.
I pushed harder. My wolf howled. My lungs screamed.
He pushed with me.
For a heartbeat, I forgot he was a vampire and I was a wolf. There was only the track and the wind and the wild, impossible joy of running beside someone who could finally keep up.
The last turn. The finish line. White chalk rushing toward me.
I threw myself forward.
We crossed the line together.
I staggered, gasping, hands on my knees. Beside me, Cassian stood tall, chest rising and falling, staring at me like I was something he had never seen before.
"Tie," I managed.
"Tie," he said quietly.
"You said I wouldn't last a minute."
"I was wrong."
The words were so unexpected I forgot to gloat.
"Say that again."
"No."
I laughed. It burst out of me, breathless and startled, and Cassian went completely still.
His nostrils flared.
A cold wind rolled across the field, carrying my scent straight to him. Pine and frost, and something warm underneath.
His eyes changed.
The ice-blue bled away like ink in water, and crimson burned through it, bright as a struck match. His lips parted. His fangs flashed. His hand shot out and caught my wrist, gently, so gently, as though I were made of glass.
"Luna."
He had never said my name before. Hearing it in his voice sent a shiver straight down my spine.
"What are you doing?"
"That's not possible." He stared at me like he'd seen a ghost. "You're..."
"Cassian, let go."
"You're my..."
His voice broke on the last word, and I felt it before I understood it. A violent, terrifying pull beneath my ribs, like a rope I never knew existed snapping tight between us.
My wolf threw back her head and howled.
Ours. Ours. Ours.
"No." I ripped my wrist away, stumbling back. "No. Vampires and wolves can't..."
"I know," he said roughly. "I know they can't."
Something whistled through the air.
I saw it too late. A flash of silver, and a crossbow bolt slammed into the barrier beside my head with a crack that split the night. Splinters sprayed across my cheek.
Cassian moved before I could scream.
One second he was in front of me. The next his arm was around my waist and we were on the ground, rolling behind the barrier, his body pressed over mine like a shield. A second bolt hissed through the space where my head had been. He caught the third in mid-air, snapped it in half, and dropped it in the grass.
"Stay down," he growled.
"Who's shooting?"
"I don't know."
"Are they aiming at you?"
His red eyes met mine, and for the first time, I saw real fear in them.
"No," he said. "They're aiming at you."
High in the shadows of the stadium wall, footsteps ran, faded, and were gone.
My hands were shaking. My heart slammed against my ribs. I reached for the bolt still buried in the wood beside my head, slim and silver and perfectly balanced.
Silver-tipped. Deadly to wolves.
I tugged it free.
Something was carved into the shaft, small and precise. A number.
The whole world went silent, that same heavy, ringing silence from before.
"Luna?" Cassian's voice sounded far away. "What is it?"
I couldn't speak.
I knew that number. I had watched it stitched across the back of a jersey for six years. I had heard crowds chant it. I had traced it on a headstone with my own fingers, five years ago, on the worst day of my life.
It was the number my brother wore the day he died.
Victor's number.
And someone had just tried to kill me with it.
