Introduction
Chapter 1
The woodland held its breath.
Akira's bare toes spoke to the moss-covered floor as she walked to the heart of the ancient grove. Moonlight crept over the canopy, creating mottled shadows that danced across her pale skin. The air was filled with suspense, as if the trees themselves knew what was about to happen.
She turned twenty-five today, and everything was about to change.
Grandmother's words lingered in her mind: "While the blood moon rises in your twenty-fifth year, you should complete the rite." It's your future, little one. The fate of Lupinia is in your hands."
Akira's heart raced as she approached the clearing. An ideal circle of white stones glistened in the moonlight, encircling a raised dais of clean, dark rock. This became it. The place she'd been planning her entire life.
She took a deep breath to steady herself. The fragrance of pine and wild herbs filled her lungs, grounding her. Akira began to disrobe with practiced movements, allowing her easy white get dressed pool to reach her toes. The cool night air caressed her skin, raising goosebumps on her hands.
She entered the circle, exposed and vulnerable.
When her foot crossed the edge, a burst of energy rushed through her body. Akira gasped and almost stumbled. It was as if every nerve ending had come alive, tingling with otherworldly energy. She moved on, making her way to the center of the dais.
Above her, the moon began to alternate. Its silvery floor deepened, taking up a deep, scarlet hue. The blood moon has commenced.
Akira closed her eyes, concentrating herself. She should feel the burden of generations past weighing down upon her. How a lot of her forefathers had stood in this very area, appearing this ancient ceremony? what number of had succeeded? what number of had failed?
No time for doubt. She had a process to do.
Her voice boomed out, clear and sturdy, as she began to chant. The sentences were ancient as the woodland itself, transmitted down throughout many generations. Akira did not comprehend their particular significance, but she ought to experience their vitality thrumming through her veins.
As she murmured, the air around her started out to shimmer. Tendrils of silvery mild sprouted from the floor, twisting and coiling about her legs. They climbed better, wrapping her body in a cocoon of pure energy.
Akira's skin tingled and then burnt. She gritted her enamel, resisting the need to cry out. The pain escalated, spreading throughout her body like a liquid inferno. Still, she did not stop chanting. She was unable to prevent. Not now.
The glittering tendrils surged and became brighter with each word. Akira's voice grew raspy, but she persevered. Sweat beaded on her brow and ran down her face in rivulets. Her legs trembled, threatening to give out beneath her.
Just when she felt she couldn't take it anymore, something inside her snapped.
A tidal flood of strength rushed through Akira's body. Her eyes sprung awake, glittering with an intense, otherworldly mild. Her hair whirled around her face, caught in a supernatural wind that appeared to radiate from her very existence.
Akira flung her head lower back and howled.
The sound that came from her throat became primal, historical, and undoubtedly powerful. It resonated through the woods, sending creatures scrambling for cover. Birds took off, their frightened screams misplaced in the aftermath of Akira's change.
The cocoon of energy that surrounded her ruptured, exploding in a spectacular display of light and energy. The tremor swept across the land, transcending borders and territories at impossible speeds.
In that second, Akira felt connected to the whole. She could feel the pulses of every creature in the woods, as well as the gentle, constant pulse of the ground underneath her. Beyond that, she sensed something else. Five powerful presences, each glowing brightly like a light in the night.
The feeling faded almost as quickly as it had appeared. Akira sank onto her knees, panting for air. Her entire body trembled, crushed by the delight. She slowly became aware of her surroundings again.
The clearing became silent. No birds sang, and no bugs chirped. It became as if the entire forest was holding its breath, waiting to see what would happen next.
Akira looked down at her palms, flexing them. She felt distinct. More powerful. She felt more alive than she ever had before. Some dormant energy that had been dozing inside her for years was suddenly fully awake.
She rose to her feet, staggering slightly. The environment appeared crisper in certain ways, with more vibrant colors and stronger odors. Akira closed her eyes and breathed deeply. She should smell... everything. The rich dirt beneath her toes, the fluid meandering through the trees, even the faint lines of deer that had passed by hours before.
While opening her eyes again, Akira gasped. The clearing had altered. The white stones that made up the circle now sparkled with an inner light that pulsed in sync with her heartbeat. The dais beneath her feet became covered in complex, dazzling runes she had never seen before.
"What have I completed?" she asked, her voice hoarse from the ceremony.
As if in solution, a hot breeze blew through the clearing. It held the aroma of change, opportunity, and risk. Akira trembled, aware of her nakedness. She hastily collected her garment, slipping it over her head with shaky fingers.
She needed to get back to her granny. Actually, she might have remedies, or be able to explain what had simply passed. Akira took a step nearer the clearing's threshold before icing over.
A deep snarl resonated across the trees.
Akira's heart was racing. She grew up in those forests and had encountered a variety of things. However, this... turned out to be something unique. Something risky.
Every other roar is closer this time. Akira's gaze flew around the clearing, looking for the supplies. Her newly heightened senses were overwhelmed, making it difficult to identify the threat.
A spray snapped in her back.
Akira spun around, her body reflexively falling into a defensive squat. Her eyes widened as she noticed what had come from the darkness.
It turned into a wolf. However, he was no longer like any other wolf she had ever seen. This thing grew in size, and its shoulder could easily reach her chest. Its fur turned as dark as the middle of the night, appearing to absorb rather than reflect the moonlight. However, it was the eyes that captured Akira's attention. They gleamed with an odd, amber light and possessed an intelligence that was way too human.
The wolf took a step nearer, its big paws silent against the forested ground. Akira gripped her floor, her heart beating in her chest. Each instinct urged her to flee, but she knew it would be a mistake. You don't run from predators. It most effectively motivates them to chase.
Alternatively, she met the wolf's eyes and refused to back away. For a long second, they stared at each other, neither moving. The wolf then inclined its head, much to Akira's amazement. It became almost... respectful?
Before she could understand what was going on, the air around the wolf shimmered. Its form began to blur, transferring and transforming before her very eyes. Akira gazed, captivated, as the wolf's frame elongated and fur receded into skin. In a matter of seconds, a man replaced the big black wolf that had previously stood there.
He grew taller, stronger, and had the same nighttime-black hair as his wolf shape. His amber eyes gleamed through the darkness, riveted on Akira's face. He also became completely naked, which she couldn't help but notice.
Akira took another involuntary step, her thoughts whirling. She'd heard tales about werewolves and direction. Each youngster in Lupinia grew up hearing legends about shapeshifters and magic. But to witness it with her own eyes...
The figure spoke with a low growl that sent shivers down Akira's spine. "So, you are the one we've been watching for."
Akira gulped hard to find her voice. "Who are you?" What do you mean by anticipating me?
He took a step closer, and Akira had to resist the temptation to retreat. There was something fascinating about him, an aura of mystery and energy that both captivated and intimidated her.
"My call is Kael," he continued, his gaze never leaving her face. "I'm the Alpha of the Nightshade extended family. "And you, little wolf, have simply altered the entire thing."
Akira's thoughts raced. Nightshade clan? They were one of the five major packs that governed Lupinia. However, their domain grew to be many miles away. What exactly is their Alpha doing here?
Kael smiled, as if analyzing her psyche. It stopped being a perfectly reassuring expression. "I felt your name," he explained. "All of us did." "The five Alphas of Lupinia are drawn to your energy like moths to a flame."
Akira's blood was bloodless. Five Alphas? He simply couldn't suggest...
A chorus of howls echoed through the night, coming from all directions. Kael smiled wider, revealing only a trace of fang. "And now they've arrived," he murmured with a deep purr. "I wish you were equipped, tiny Luna. "Your reign is about to begin."
Akira's head spun. Luna? Reign? None of it made sense. She opened her mouth to yell for help, but four more wolves rushed into the clearing before she could speak. Every one grew to be as large as Kael, with fur in a spectrum of colors, including deep purple, stormy gray, rich brown, and ghostly white.
As Akira watched, locked in place, every wolf began to change. She quickly found herself surrounded by five nude males, each oozing power and authority. 5 Alphas, just as Kael had indicated.
They all looked at her with a mix of admiration and greed, making Akira's skin prickle. She had never felt more exposed or vulnerable in her life.
Kael's voice lowered as a result of his fear. He said, "gents," in an absurdly formal tone. "May I present our prophesied Luna? the one who will unite our packs and guide us into a new era."
Akira's eyes expanded. Was Luna prophesied? Combine the packs? What did he end up talking about?
But as she looked around at the 5 Alphas, noticing how they looked at her - with preference, want, and barely restrained anger - she discovered one component with surprising clarity.
Her familiar way of life had come to an end. And then something happened... it turned out to be quite the journey.

One thing I know: now is the time.

"No." "I'm fine."

"I'm not—"
"Your scent." His nostrils flare. "Kara, you smell like—"
"Stop." I cover my face with my hands. "Just—stop."
