Her tone turned sharp. "Do you always have to make everything sound so transactional? Chris and I grew up together. Of course I want him to feel included."
"I thought this was a family trip?"
"Chris is different."
"Last week, when my dad wanted to come, you said no because it was 'our family trip!'"
"Being around your dad makes me uncomfortable. Chris knows everything about us—he's practically family."
Before I could respond, Lia's mother, Caroline, stepped in to calm me.
"Landon, don't make a fuss. Chris and Lia have known each other since they were children. It's only right we look out for him."
Mia chirped happily, "Chris is riding first class with us? Awesome! You're rich, Landon—just let him have it this once."
I glanced at the brand-new full ski set in her hands and felt the irony sink deep.
"Can't you be the bigger person, as my fiancé?" Lia snapped.
The doorbell rang.
"It's Chris!"
Chris walked in wearing casual vacation clothes, dragging an oversized suitcase.
Mia rushed over to help him with his bag. "You're finally here! I've been looking forward to this. If you hadn't moved away, you and Lia would've gotten married—you'd be my real brother-in-law!"
Caroline walked over and patted Chris on the shoulder.
"That's right. I've always said you're like a son to us. No one measures up to you in my eyes."
They were praising another man right in front of me.
