Introduction

I’m a retired special forces soldier.

Three months ago, my little brother vanished—and every lead went dead.

I tracked the trail to a private rehab clinic on a tropical island. On the surface, it’s wellness and recovery. Underneath, it’s an organ market.

Following the clinic led me to one person—her. She specializes in luring “donors” through the front door.

To avenge my brother, I got close on purpose and let her become my girlfriend.

She thought I was easy money, a body delivered to her table, and she brought me into that clinic herself.

She didn’t know I’d been waiting for this moment for three months.

On the operating table, the needle hovered three centimeters from my skin.

She thought I was finished.

She didn’t know these hands have held a gun—and snapped more than a few necks.

Chapter 1

I’m a retired special forces soldier.

Three months ago, my little brother vanished—and every lead went dead.

I tracked the trail to a private rehab clinic on a tropical island. On the surface, it’s wellness and recovery. Underneath, it’s an organ market.

Following the clinic led me to one person—her. She specializes in luring “donors” through the front door.

To avenge my brother, I got close on purpose and let her become my girlfriend.

She didn’t know I’d been waiting for this moment for three months.

On the operating table, the needle hovered three centimeters from my skin.

She thought I was finished.

She didn’t know these hands have held a gun—and snapped more than a few necks.

————

Night. The car hugged the island road and skimmed forward, tires hissing over wet asphalt.

There were no city lights outside the window—just the occasional shadow of palm trees sliding past, and a thin, cold sheen on the distant sea.

The air-conditioning in the cabin was set low. I sat in the back seat, rubbing a small badge over and over in my right palm.

The metal edges had been worn smooth and bright. It was my brother Noah’s handiwork from art class.

Half a year ago, the moment he finished it, he stuffed it into my pocket like it was treasure and told me it was a “good-luck charm,” that I wasn’t allowed to leave home without it.

I gripped it hard, as if squeezing tight enough could hold on to that stretch of time, too.

The car gave a slight sway. I lifted my eyes toward the front.

The driver was in his thirties, broad-shouldered, the kind of man who looked like he didn’t back down from trouble.

In the passenger seat sat Lena—my girlfriend.

I’d flown for more than ten hours, then switched between car and boat, all to come here to meet her father. He had been staying long-term at a retreat on this island.

Lena was dressed plain tonight: a thin white jacket, hair tied up casually, like a tourist on holiday. She turned her face slightly toward the driver and spoke to him in the local language, voice low.

Fast pace. Short phrases. Every now and then she slipped in a word I didn’t recognize—maybe a place name, maybe a password.

The driver never looked back. He just kept nodding, tapping the steering wheel twice with his fingers.

When Lena finished, she turned around and smiled at me—easy, natural.

“Ten more minutes and we’ll be at Silver Pines Retreat,” she said softly. “My dad’s waiting. Don’t be nervous. He’ll like you.”

I nodded and matched her rhythm, calm like we were talking about the weather. “Okay. I’m not worried.”

She relaxed a little, turned forward again, and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

Of course I wasn’t worried. I simply rolled the badge halfway around in my palm.

Lena had mentioned “Silver Pines Retreat” again and again on the way here. She described it as quiet, clean, expensive—an exclusive private wellness center with great surroundings and strict management. Visits by appointment only. Security for the patients’ privacy.

She said her father’s health wasn’t good, that he preferred to rest on the island and hated noise. She said bringing me to meet him meant she was serious about our future. She even dropped a few lines that sounded like the sort of thing you only say between family—like, “Once you’ve met him, I’ll finally feel at ease.”

That was her story.

I knew Silver Pines wasn’t a retreat. It was a farm in an organ pipeline.

This wasn’t instinct or guesswork.

I spent three months pulling every loose thread I could find, twisting them together until they became one rope.

My name is Ethan Cross. I’m a retired special forces operator. After that, I joined a cleanup outfit—investigation, assassinations, removing bodies, wiping evidence. I walked away a year ago.

My parents died early. Noah and I only had each other. I’m not the kind of man who talks about “family,” but Noah was the only home I had.

Three months ago, my brother Noah—eight years old—vanished.

That day I only went to the supermarket to pick up a few things. When I came back, the door was half-open. The cartoon was still playing, like Noah had simply run outside to the yard for a few minutes.

A neighbor said they didn’t hear shouting. The only thing they noticed was an ice cream truck parked for a few minutes—then driving off.

The security camera “happened” to break during that window. The police filed reports and did their checks, but the trail was cut clean, as if a hand had pinched it off at the source.

I could feel it: someone didn’t want this investigated.

I’m not good at asking for help. I’m good at taking problems apart.

I followed the clues step by step, over months—missing children, underground brokers, black-market clinics, cross-border transport.

I tracked the books of two fake charities. I chased matching posts on an anonymous forum. I even visited a “private clinic” hidden behind a bar’s back door.

Every time I thought I was close, the answer slipped and I realized I’d only reached another link in the chain.

In the end, I found “Silver Pines.” And through it, I found Lena.

Her job was to scout for buyers who needed organs, get close to the right targets, and bring them in.

She wasn’t the kind of woman who sets off alarms at first glance.

If anything, she was good at making people relax. She knew when to step closer, when to ease off, when to use a small joke to smooth over awkwardness, when to say “You’ve been working too hard lately” and press your guard down with a gentle hand.

She didn’t work through seduction. She worked through something more effective: making you believe you were understood.

I wasn’t understood. I was watching.

I staged a few “coincidental” meetings and showed her what she needed to see: healthy body, no chronic illness, strong physical condition, a rare blood type, and no obvious social ties that would cause trouble.

She labeled me prey fast.

That was exactly what I needed. It was the only way to get close enough.

She thought I was the prey. In truth, she was—or rather, they were.

I wasn’t waiting for her love or her promises. I was waiting for her to say one sentence: I want to take you home.

Because that would mean she was finally bringing me to the core.

As for Noah… I’d made the worst-case plan.

This kind of operation doesn’t keep dead weight. Logic told me he was probably already gone.

Fine.

Whoever did it—none of them were walking away.

Outside the car, the wind changed. It felt like we’d left the open coastline and turned into something enclosed.

The streetlights ahead thinned out, then disappeared completely.

The driver eased off the gas. The speed dropped. Through the side window I saw the outline of chain-link fencing, and behind it, tall floodlights sweeping the road like blades.

Dog barks carried from a distance—short, sharp, trained.

Or maybe more than one.

Lena kept her gentle face. She even glanced back at me, as if checking whether I was scared. But her hand tightened on her bag strap without meaning to, knuckles whitening, then loosened again—like she didn’t want me to notice.

I didn’t have to guess what was inside: an access card, a phone, maybe a backup syringe.

I shifted the badge from my palm to my fingertips, pressed it lightly, then let it settle back into my hand, like a private confirmation.

No moving before I’m inside.

Once I’m in, no way out.

The car rounded a bend. A tall metal gate filled the headlights, cold light flashing off its surface. A guard booth sat beside it, a shadow moving behind the window.

The driver rolled down his window and spoke a line in the local language. One word repeated twice—like a passphrase. The booth went quiet for a few seconds, then came the faint sound of buttons being pressed.

The gate split open slowly with a heavy grind.

As we drove through, the view abruptly brightened.

The grounds were dressed like a resort: white walls, trimmed plants, neat gravel paths, and low garden lamps spaced evenly.

In the distance stood a main building, warm light spilling from its windows, like everything here was normal—too normal.

But as we crossed the main road, a refrigerated truck rolled by on a side lane. “Medical Supplies” was printed on the side in clean, official lettering.

The cargo box was sealed tight. The metal latch on the rear door caught the light for a split second. I smelled a sharp sting of disinfectant as the air-conditioning pushed it into the cabin.

The truck eased into the parking area in front of the main building.

The driver got out, walked around, and opened Lena’s door.

She stepped out, smoothed her jacket, then turned back to me, voice light, as if coaxing me into a warm house.

“We’re here,” she said. “Stay close.”

I slid the small badge into my pocket and pressed it through the fabric with my fingertips, like pressing down on a promise.

Then I opened my door and stepped onto the clean gravel path, lifting my eyes to the brightly lit building ahead.

Silver Pines Retreat.

I followed Lena out of the car, my pace steady—like an ordinary man about to meet his girlfriend’s father.

Only I knew I wasn’t here to be approved.

I was here to settle accounts.
