My Mother Chose a Wedding Over My Daughter's Life
Zara Thorne · Completed · 6.4k Words
Introduction
Her mother had it—but chose to spend $300,000 on her younger sister's wedding instead.
That was the day Evelyn walked out. No more pleading. No more coming back.
Her husband sold his father's last heirloom. Their neighbors emptied their wallets. They saved her daughter and left for a new life.
A year later, her mother's money was gone. The fraud was exposed. The mansion was seized. The calls started coming—calls begging for help, for money, for forgiveness.
Evelyn listened, then hung up.
She is not going back. Not for guilt, not for blood. The family that let her daughter die does not get to ask her for anything.
Chapter 1
My eight-year-old daughter lay in the ICU, waiting for a $50,000 bone marrow transplant to save her life.
Yet my biological mother, who controlled the only trust fund my grandmother had left behind, told me she couldn't spare a single cent.
I knelt on the floor of her villa and begged bitterly, only to earn a vicious slap across the face and a harsh warning: "Don't ruin your sister's wedding of the century over your little burden."
Clutching my bleeding lip, I stared at them—draped in designer labels and fresh off astronomical cosmetic procedures.
They thought the mere word "blood" would be enough to make me bow my head and swallow every injustice, just as I had done for the past twenty years.
But they forgot one thing: a mother would give up absolutely anything for her child—and that included them.
"The match is a success, but the fifty-thousand-dollar initial surgical fee must be wired into the hospital's account by tonight. Otherwise, we'll have no choice but to transfer the donor to the next patient in line."
The doctor's words still buzzed in my head.
Before my grandmother passed away, she left behind a massive trust fund, leaving it entirely under my mother Eleanor's control. The will was ruthlessly airtight: until Eleanor passed away, neither my sister Chloe nor I had the right to even inquire about the accounts.
But right now, it was the only lifeline I could grasp.
I rushed to my mother's villa, my clothes distinctly reeking of hospital disinfectant. As I walked in, a wave of expensive rose fragrance hit my face, violently out of place.
"Mom, please advance me fifty grand. Lily can't wait any longer."
Eleanor cradled her teacup, not even bothering to look up. "Evelyn, does it physically pain you to see me have a few days of peace? The money has long been tied up in the stock market, dropping for three straight months! You forcing me to cough up cash now—are you trying to drive me to an early grave?"
"But Grandma's trust fund has at least—"
"The trust is locked! Pulling it out now means losing the interest!" she snapped, cutting me off. "I did my duty raising you to eighteen. You were the one who insisted on marrying that blue-collar deadbeat. Now you've popped out a sickly brat, and you're coming after my life instead?"
I dropped to my knees with a heavy thud, grabbing the hem of her dress. "Consider it a loan. I'll write you an IOU right now! I'll pay you interest every single month, even if I have to sell my own blood! Mom, that is your own flesh-and-blood granddaughter's life!"
Eleanor violently yanked her dress from my grip with a look of pure disgust. "Wait until the market recovers. I don't have a single cent on me right now."
Her phone on the coffee table suddenly lit up. It was a reply from a relative in the extended family group chat: "A $300,000 spectacle! Truly a Wall Street wedding. Chloe is so blessed!"
Eleanor glanced at it, a smug smirk tugging at the corners of her mouth.
Almost at that exact second, my own phone vibrated. It was a social media post Chloe had uploaded half a minute ago, geotagged at the Parisian Dream Bridal Salon. She was wearing a custom haute couture wedding gown encrusted with crushed diamonds, smiling triumphantly into the mirror. The caption read: [My princess dream, totally funded by Mom! Love you, Mommy!]
I stared at that line of text, then shifted my gaze to Eleanor's glowing screen, where the words "A $300,000 spectacle" still shined brightly.
Three hundred thousand dollars for a party that would last a single day. Fifty thousand dollars to buy her biological granddaughter's life.
This was her so-called "locked stock market"?
I stood up, snatched her phone away, and shoved the two screens side-by-side right into her face.
"How exactly did the money tied up in the stock market get tied into Chloe's wedding dress?"
Eleanor froze for a second, her face instantly turning dark.
Smack!
A vicious backhand lashed across my left cheek.
"Who the hell do you think you are, questioning me with that tone?" She pointed a finger inches from my nose. "Chloe is marrying into a true Wall Street dynasty next month! That wedding is the face of our entire family! Without this three-hundred-thousand-dollar spectacle, how is she supposed to hold her head high around her in-laws!"
"You chose your broke husband, and you chose your miserable life! Your kid is your own problem! Don't bring your bad luck anywhere near us!"
The sharp click of stilettos echoed from the staircase. Chloe sauntered down, covering her mouth in mock shock. "Oh my god, Evelyn, don't make Mom mad. Is it because I spent too much money? How about... I just call off the wedding and return the dress so Lily can get her treatment..."
"Save it." I stared at her pitifully innocent face, then swept my gaze over my fuming mother, before turning on my heel and striding toward the door.
"Get out! And once you're gone, don't ever come crawling back here begging for scraps!" Eleanor cursed from behind.
I shoved the front doors open, and the torrential rain instantly soaked me to the bone.
I pulled up the family group chat and typed out a message:
[Just confirmed that a $300,000 wedding banquet is more important than Lily's life. As of today, I am cutting all ties with Ms. Eleanor and this family. We are done.]
I tapped send. Then, I left the group.
Over a dozen red notification dots exploded at the top of my screen, the phone vibrating relentlessly.
I powered it off and walked straight into the blinding storm, heading back toward the hospital.
