Introduction

The world thought I was a broken man after rotting in the Abyss for five years. Even Moretti, the wealthiest mogul in Cold Harbor, dared to point a finger at my nose and demand I kneel.
He razed my estate, seized my daughter, and humiliated my past on a city-wide livestream.
What he didn’t know was that the moment his infrared scanners locked onto me, I had already initiated the sequence for a dormant orbital satellite that had been sleeping above us for five years.
When the skyscraper turns to ash, the man kneeling before me won’t be that arrogant tycoon—only a trembling corpse.
After all, in this city, I don’t believe in reason. I only believe in retribution.

Chapter 1

The rain in Cold Harbor always carries the acrid, metallic stench of industrial waste. Even five years ago, that scent was the stuff of my nightmares. I never imagined that breathing this filthy air again would cut so sharply into my lungs.

I sat in my matte-black armored Humvee, the engine’s low growl roaring through the downpour like a caged beast. Five years ago, I was forcibly exiled from this city to the "Abyss," a black-site prison where I eventually became the sole ruler. I had seen regimes collapse and top-tier criminals tremble at my feet; I thought my heart had long since frozen into an eternal stone, submerged in liquid nitrogen.

Then, three hours ago, an encrypted message sliced through my chest like a heated blade.

It was a distress signal from Eileen—my life’s only weakness.

On my holographic display, the live feed of the Jinan District Estate played out. Four-year-old Lily sat in the mud like a discarded doll. Her tiny hand, which should have been holding a Barbie, was being crushed without mercy by a designer Italian leather shoe. It was Greg, Eileen’s half-brother—a leech living off the Moretti family’s corruption.

"Eat it, you little mongrel," Greg’s mocking voice cut through the monitor. He twisted his heel into the dirt. "Look at this dog food. Fresh, just your style. If you spit out even a morsel, I’ll shove this shoe into your mother’s throat and dump you both into the East Harbor sinking pits!"

Lily’s face was deathly pale. Her eyes were wide with a terror so deep that the tears had run dry—she had been tortured to the point where she lacked the strength to even weep. When she shivered and tried to crawl toward Eileen, Greg kicked her away with a cold laugh, sending her sprawling into a hard concrete corner. Blood bloomed instantly against her pale forehead.

My pupils contracted; my heart gripped tight by an invisible hand. My Abyssal Agent insignia sank into my palm, leaving a permanent mark.

"Target locked, Greg," the Ghost in the passenger seat muttered coldly. "Requesting permission to breach?"

"No request needed," I replied, my voice like a wind from the underworld. "Direct impact."

BOOM!

The engine roared as the Humvee surged forward like a cruise missile. The estate's "high-strength alloy" gate, designed to withstand small-arms fire, crumpled like paper in a shower of sparks. The security system fell instantly under my digital override; every camera rotated, bowing to their true king.

I stepped out into the pouring rain. I ignored the guards drawing their guns. I ignored the heavy weaponry aimed at my skull. I simply walked toward Greg, each step paced like the swing of a reaper’s scythe.

Greg looked up, brain-dead with terror. "Who... who are you..."

CRACK.

I didn't intend to hear a word. I gripped his wrist, applying enough leverage to shatter the bone instantly. His scream shattered the night. I leaned down and scooped up the soiled, shivering frame of my daughter. She was so light it broke my heart. I wrapped her in my tactical trench coat, and she looked up, whispering, "...Daddy?"

I suppressed the urge to burn the city down. I glared at the surrounding guards, and they dropped their weapons, paralyzed. They smelled it—the scent of the apex predator from the Abyss.

"Tell Moretti," I said, picking up a guard's discarded pistol and slamming a bullet onto the ground near Greg’s head, "that I won't kill him today. I’ll make him watch his precious empire turn to ash in three days."

BANG! A massive hole appeared in the concrete as Greg finally lost control of his bladder.

Just then, the door opened. Eileen staggered out, a ghost of her former self. When she saw me, her last line of defense crumbled.

"Leon!"

But then, the nightmare truly began. Black bile surged up Lily’s throat. She convulsed, and Eileen’s nails dug into my shoulder: "It’s the 'Death Spore' Moretti planted in her! Only his lab has the antidote. He said if you don't kneel to him, he’ll let us rot!"

I looked toward the skyscraper in the city center—the monument of Moretti’s reign. In my eyes, it had just become a headstone.

I didn't tell him to stop.
Instead, my fingers curled into his shirt, clutching the fabric as though it was my only anchor. Something in him snapped—something he had been holding back for too long. His mouth found mine in a kiss that wasn't tender, but hungry, desperate.
I gasped into him, his hand sliding up to cup my jaw, holding me as if afraid I might vanish.
"You drive me insane," he breathed against my mouth, his lips trailing to my throat. "I can't lose you, Ella. Not you."
My head fell back, a soft sound escaping me as his fingers memorized my waist. My anger melted beneath his desperation.
"James..." I whispered, more plea than protest.
His hand caught mine, fingers threading together tightly. "I'll bring him back. I swear it. Just... don't turn away from me. Please."
The word please—low, ragged, almost broken—undid me more than anything else could have.

Before I could answer, he moved closer, suddenly looming over me, his face inches from mine. I felt my breath caught, my lips parting in surprise.
