Introduction

It's 1000 years in the future, and humans have learned to travel the galaxy, discovering and colonizing planets as they go. They rely heavily on the development of robots and compete for resources to survive. A coup is enacted that changes the future of the planet Redwood, leaving the sole survivor, Princess Valerissa Gearheart, in hiding after her 14th birthday. After hiding for 7 years, Valerissa, now known only as the Gear Maiden, survived by becoming the leading creator of Chaperone Droids for the rich class of debutantes.
During those 7 years, Val created a very sophisticated AI interface that can learn human emotions and act like a human. She never replicated it for fear of being used for bad things, so there is only one droid with it. Her faithful companion, Ageis. Ageis later falls in love with Val as they work to return her home.
After so long a chance finally shows itself, and Val gets to work on taking back what belongs to her. Making new friends along the way, and learning new things about her family, Val strives to fix this world and bring peace back to Redwood.

Chapter 1

In the year 3023, the planet Redwood thrived under a canopy of towering electronic trees, their leaves shimmering with hues of emerald and gold. The air buzzed with the hum of drones and robotic assistants, a testament to humanity’s reliance on technology in their quest to colonize the stars. On this day, the palace of the Gearheart's was alive with anticipation, for it was my 14th birthday, a milestone celebrated with grandeur and joy.

The grand hall of Redwood Palace was adorned with vibrant banners, each representing a different colony that had pledged allegiance to our dynasty. The scent of sweet ambrosia cakes filled the air, mingling with the laughter of guests who had traveled from far and wide to honor me. Clad in a gown of sparkling silks that glimmered in the light of the crystal chandeliers, my heart swelled with joy and a sense of belonging, surrounded by friends, family, and the legacy of my ancestors.

My parents, King Egon and Queen Rosaline, were radiant in their royal attire, sharing stories of the Gearheart legacy—tales of bravery and unity that had shaped Redwood’s history. Yet, beneath the surface of merriment, a dark cloud loomed. I noticed General Darius Semper, my father’s most trusted advisor, lingering in the shadows, his eyes filled with a cold ambition that sent a shiver down my spine.

As I mingled with my guests, blissfully unaware of the brewing storm, Darius’s presence haunted the periphery of my awareness. His demeanor had shifted from loyalty to something darker, something that threatened the very foundation of my family’s rule.

Suddenly, the doors of the grand hall burst open, and armed soldiers clad in metallic armor stormed in, their weapons raised. Panic erupted as guests screamed and scrambled for safety. I froze, my heart racing as I saw Darius step forward, a sinister grin plastered across his face.

“Your reign ends today, Gearheart!” Darius shouted, his voice booming through the hall. “The time for change has come!”

My eyes widened in horror as I watched my father, King Egon, rush to confront the traitorous general. “You’ve lost your mind, Darius! Stand down!” he commanded, but Darius’s soldiers opened fire without hesitation.

Chaos descended upon the hall, blaster shots ringing out, echoing against the marble walls. “Protect the princess!” my mother cried out, her voice piercing through the insanity. The sight of my parents standing back-to-back, their expressions hardened, was both inspiring and heartbreaking. They fought valiantly, but Darius had planned this coup meticulously, and his soldiers overwhelmed them.

The unthinkable happened before my eyes—my parents, the embodiment of love and strength, were brutally slain. Time seemed to freeze, and I felt the ground tremble with despair beneath me. But then, in the chaos, I turned and fled, my instincts screaming for survival.

As I darted through the throng of panicked guests, Darius’s voice called out in pursuit. “Stop her!” he shouted, but it was as if the universe conspired in my favor. Amid the bloodshed and confusion, I slipped away.

Loyal servants, who had dedicated their lives to my family, rushed to my side. “Your Highness, we must go!” urged Elara, the head maid, her voice filled with urgency. “There’s a hidden passage in the palace. We can escape!”

Still in shock, I nodded, my mind racing with the need to survive. As the chaos swirled around me, I grabbed Elara’s hand, and we dashed toward the back of the hall. The loyal servants led me through a series of corridors, ducking beneath the blasts of energy bolts that zipped past us.

“Here!” Jarek, a young servant, shouted as we reached a concealed door hidden behind a tapestry. He pushed it open, revealing a dark, narrow passageway. “This will lead you to the forest. You must go now!”

I hesitated, my heart heavy with the weight of loss. “What about you all?” I asked, panic rising in my chest.

“We will hold them off,” Elara said, her eyes fierce with determination. “You are the future of Redwood. You must escape!”

Tears streamed down my cheeks as I stepped into the darkness of the passage, my heart torn between grief and the instinct for survival. The door shut behind me with a resounding thud, sealing me away from the only home I had ever known.

As I navigated through the winding tunnels, the sounds of battle faded, replaced by the soft rustling of leaves and the distant chirping of crickets. Emerging into the moonlit forest, I inhaled the crisp air, filled with the scent of pine and earth. I was free, but I felt utterly alone.

The ancient trees loomed around me, their roots intertwined with the history of my family. I stood for a moment, allowing the memories of my parents to wash over me. I could almost hear my mother’s soothing voice and my father’s encouraging laughter. A flicker of determination ignited within me. I couldn’t let their sacrifices be in vain. I would reclaim my home and restore peace to Redwood, no matter the cost.

With each step deeper into the woods, I felt the weight of my destiny settling upon my shoulders. I had been thrust into a world of danger and uncertainty, but I was not without resources. The forest was filled with whispers of ancient spirits, the guardians of Redwood. I could feel their presence guiding me, reminding me of my lineage.

As dawn broke, I found a secluded glade, the sunlight filtering through the leaves, casting dappled patterns on the ground. Here, I paused to gather my thoughts. I needed allies, a plan, and the courage to face Darius and his forces. I had to find a way to rally the people of Redwood, to show them that their true strength lay in unity.

Days turned into weeks as I honed my survival skills in the forest. I learned to navigate the terrain, foraging for food and using my wits to evade the patrols sent by Darius. All the while, I listened for rumors, seeking out those loyal to my family among the scattered colonies. My journey had just begun, and though the path ahead was fraught with peril, I was determined to reclaim my legacy and bring hope back to Redwood.

Heartbroken, I tricked him into signing divorce papers.

Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.

When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.

"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"

George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"

"I'm afraid that's impossible."

Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."
