Introduction
I didn't find out until Vittorio Salvi walked into the bar where I work and told me exactly how he intended to collect — not in cash, but in me. A wedding. His son. A debt paid in the currency of my whole life.
I ran straight into the one man in Ironport with more reason to hate the Salvi name than I do.
Damien "Ghost" Cole runs the Ravage Kings the way he runs everything else — controlled, careful, six years deep in a grief he's never let anyone close enough to see. His brother died because of a debt that wasn't even his. Mine just walked into his garage wearing someone else's blood money on my back.
He says he's keeping me safe. He says it's leverage. He says a lot of things with his jaw locked tight and his eyes doing something that isn't careful at all.
I know better than to trust a man with a war to win. I know better than to want the way he looks at me like I'm not a debt, not a bargaining chip, just — mine, somehow, in a way nobody's ever bothered to claim before.
Vittorio Salvi wants a wedding. Damien Cole wants a war. And I'm done being the thing men decide over my head.
Ironport was built on debts nobody survives paying off.
I intend to be the first.
Chapter 1
Nadia
The bar was busy enough that I almost didn't notice him walk in.
Almost. That's the thing about a man like Vittorio Salvi — he doesn't so much enter a room as subtract the air from it. One second the Rust Bucket was its usual Friday racket, pool balls cracking, some guy's playlist arguing with itself over the speakers. The next, two men in overcoats that cost more than my rent took the booth by the door, and Vittorio Salvi walked to the bar like he already owned the stool he was about to sit on.
He probably did. Vittorio Salvi owned a lot of things in Ironport that didn't have his name on the deed.
"Nadia Kane," he said, like he was trying the name out for size. "You look like your father."
My hand didn't shake pouring his drink. I want that on the record, even if only for myself. "I get that a lot," I said. "Usually from people who knew him better than I did."
"I knew him very well." He didn't touch the glass. "Well enough that I'm sorry to be the one to tell you he left you something other than that apartment on Girard Street."
Sofia, three feet down the bar pretending to polish a glass she'd already polished twice, went very still. I felt her listening the way you feel weather changing.
"My father left me a stack of unpaid bills and a life insurance policy that didn't cover the funeral," I said. "If he left me something else, I haven't seen it."
"He left you a debt." Vittorio said it gently, the way you'd tell someone their dog had died. "One hundred and forty thousand dollars, accrued over nine years, against my family. He was — " a small, considering pause, like he was choosing the kind word instead of the true one — "careless with money that wasn't his."
The number didn't mean anything to me at first. Numbers that big never do; they're abstractions, weather on another continent. Then it landed, the way debt always lands eventually, and my stomach dropped through the floor.
"I don't have that," I said. "I don't have a tenth of that."
"I know." He finally picked up the drink, turned the glass in the light like he was checking it for flaws. "Which is why I'm not here to collect money, Ms. Kane. I'm here to offer a resolution. My son Marco is a good man. A steady man. He needs a wife, and I would very much like my family's business with yours to end in a marriage instead of — " another pause, this one with teeth in it — "a less pleasant arrangement."
I laughed. It came out wrong, too sharp, more panic than humor. "You want me to marry your son to pay off a debt I didn't even know existed an hour ago."
"I want," Vittorio said, standing, buttoning his coat with the unhurried precision of a man who has never once in his life been told no and meant it, "to give you a dignified way out of a situation that could otherwise get very undignified indeed. Think about it. I'll be in touch." He set a card on the bar, black with silver lettering, an address and nothing else. "Sunday dinner. Bring an appetite."
He left the way he'd come — the room exhaling once the door swung shut behind him.
Sofia was at my side before it had fully closed. "Please tell me that man did not just try to buy you like a used car."
"He tried to buy me like a very indebted car, yes."
"Nadia."
"I know." My hands had started shaking, finally, four minutes too late to be useful. I put down the bottle I was still holding before I dropped it. "I know, Sof."
I didn't have a hundred and forty thousand dollars. I didn't have a plan. What I had was my father's old duffel bag under my bed, half-packed since the week he died, like some part of me had known this exact moment was coming and had been quietly getting ready for it for months.
I closed out my till twenty minutes early and told Sofia I needed air. What I actually needed was to not be inside four walls that Vittorio Salvi's cologne was still faintly present in. I walked. I didn't have a direction so much as an urgency, and Ironport at night doesn't care which; the fog comes up off the water regardless, and the streetlights turn everything the color of a healing bruise.
I was three blocks from the bar, cutting through the lot behind the old shipping warehouses because it was faster and I wasn't thinking about faster-versus-safer, when the motorcycle came around the corner too quick and I stepped back too slow and the whole ugly comedy of it ended with me on the wet asphalt and a very large, very angry man standing over his very large, very angry bike, checking it for damage before he even looked at me.
"Are you kidding me," I said, from the ground, because apparently that was the register my brain had chosen for this evening.
He looked down. Even in bad light I could see the calculation happen behind his eyes — not concern, not yet, more like a man doing math. "You ran into the road."
"I was walking, this is a road, roads have people on them—" I got myself up before he could offer a hand, which was petty, and satisfying. My palms were scraped. My jacket had a long dark smear down one side that was going to need explaining to no one, since no one was waiting for me to come home and explain anything.
That was the first time I really looked at him. Leather cut, patches I didn't know how to read yet, a build like the bike wasn't the biggest thing he'd ever had to control. Dark hair, a jaw that looked like it had never once relaxed. Eyes that did the thing Vittorio's had done — took the air out of the space between us, except this felt less like drowning and more like being seen, all the way down, in a way that made me want to put my jacket back on even though I hadn't taken it off.
"You're bleeding," he said. Not an apology. An observation, delivered like it annoyed him.
"I'm aware."
"You're also standing in Ravage territory at eleven at night looking like you just saw a ghost."
"I saw worse than a ghost." It came out before I could stop it, thin and true, and something shifted in his expression — not softness, I want to be clear, nothing so generous as softness, but attention. A recalculation.
"Yeah?" he said. "Who."
I don't know why I told him. Maybe because he was a stranger and strangers are safer than the people who actually know your life. Maybe because my hands were still shaking and I needed to say it out loud to someone who wasn't Sofia, wasn't going to try to fix it, was just going to stand there being enormous and unreadable while I said it.
"Vittorio Salvi," I said, "just told me I owe his family a hundred and forty thousand dollars and the payment plan is marrying his son."
The man went very, very still. It was a different stillness than Vittorio's — Vittorio's stillness was a predator deciding whether to bother. This was something colder. Older.
"Say that again," he said quietly.
"Which part."
"The name."
"Vittorio Salvi." I watched it land in him like a stone down a well, waited for the splash and didn't hear one — just watched his jaw tighten, watched six years of something I didn't understand yet move behind his eyes.
"Get on the bike," he said.
"I don't even know your name."
"Damien Cole." He was already swinging back onto the motorcycle like the conversation was over, like I'd already said yes. "And you just told me the Salvi family has a hundred and forty thousand reasons to hurt you. So get on the bike, or stand here and wait for them to come collect."
I looked back the way I'd come — toward the bar, my apartment, my whole small unremarkable life that had, in the space of one hour, developed a price tag.
I got on the bike.
