Introduction

"He was my world, my guardian, and my first love. He raised me to be his queen, but killed me when I became his conscience.
Loving him was a death sentence."

Selene Raventhorn had nothing until Alpha Kaelen Thorneclaw took her in. She grew up under his protection, fighting to be worthy of the place he gave her. Somewhere along the way, her loyalty turned into love. She gave him everything.

But it was never enough.

When Kaelen brought a beautiful outsider home to become his luna, everything changed. Lies spread. Trust shattered. And Selene was framed for a crime she didn’t commit. Betrayed by the man she loved most, she died in fire… along with her son.

Until she was reborn.

Five years before it all happened.

This time, Selene’s done being the victim. She’s not waiting for the blow to fall or for Kaelen to toss her aside. She’s walking away first—cutting the cord before his games can destroy what’s left of her.

But fate has other plans. And so does Alpha Rowan Drayce—a powerful, mysterious Alpha from beyond the border who saves her when she least expects it. With him, Selene finds something she never had before: freedom… and maybe something darker and deeper.

Will Selene escape the fate that once broke her? Or is she running straight into a new kind of danger?

Chapter 1

Selene’s POV

"Let's sever our ties!"

The air in the bedroom was thick enough to choke on. It wasn't just the summer air—the tension and hatred in the room were heavy enough to feel.

I sat on the edge of the bed, my fingers twisting in the hem of my shirt, trying to keep my breathing steady. My son, Shaun, was asleep in the next room, thank god. He didn’t need to hear this.

My mate, Kaelen Thorneclaw, the Alpha of the Bloodhowl Pack, stood by the window, his back to me. He looked every bit the Alpha—strong, well-built, and completely unreachable.

Beside him, draped over an armchair like she owned the place, was Vireya Blackboom. She was picking at a loose thread on her silk robe, looking bored, though I knew she was loving every second of this.

Technically, I was Kaelen’s wife and fated mate, but Vireya was the one who ruled the pack as the Luna.

Seven years of my life turned into a punchline and cruel joke when I discovered their betrayal. To make it worse, Milo, their fourteen-year-old bastard, had made life a living hell for me and my son, Shaun.

The humiliation burned worse than any physical wound. I had bled for this pack. I had stood by Kaelen when the world was falling apart. And now, I had been treated like a servant in the pack I called home.

I lost my parents in a fire when I was only ten, and Kaelen was the one who pulled me from the wreckage. He raised me, and as I grew, my gratitude turned into a love so deep it was all I knew.

After I lost everything, he became my world and my first everything. I spent my life adoring him from the shadows, watching his every move like he was the sun.

I was the girl who always knew what he needed before he did. I spent years watching him, memorizing the way he moved and the sound of his voice. Whether it was sharpening his blades, tending his injuries, or standing between him and a threat, I was there. I made sure his coffee was hot before he even asked, tended to his wounds after every hunt, and stood as his silent shield in battle.

I didn't just love him; I lived to serve him. I gave him every ounce of my loyalty because I truly believed he was my savior.

We sealed our bond the day we married—I was only eighteen, and back then, the world felt perfect. Everything was beautiful and bright until Vireya arrived. Almost overnight, Kaelen turned into a stranger—cold, aloof, and miles away even when he was standing right in front of me.

“Why…” My voice cracked like dead leaves. “Kaelen… what did I do to deserve this?"

"You still think that title means something?" Vireya asked lightly, as if she were discussing the weather rather than destroying my life. She didn't even look at me; she was too busy inspecting her manicure. "Look at you, Selene. You’re pale and messed up, and you’re clinging to a title that hasn't fit you in years."

"I'm the mother of the heir," I said, my voice shaking more than I wanted it to. "I’ve given Kaelen a son. That counts for something."

Kaelen finally turned around, and the expression on his face made my heart drop into my stomach. There was no remnant of the man I used to love. There was no love or even pity. Just a cold, hard disgust, like I was something filthy he’d stepped in on the sidewalk.

"A son doesn't make you a queen," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "It makes you a vessel. You've done your job. But don't mistake that for importance. You’ve always been weak. You cry over every little thing, you question my orders, and you think your 'loyalty' is some kind of shield."

"I'm done with you!" he added firmly. "I’m severing the ties—the marriage, the bond, all of it. Milo deserves a legitimate title, and Vireya is the only one who will sit by my side as Luna."

I gasped, the air leaving my lungs. "Kaelen, you can't—"

"I can, and I will," he snapped, stepping into my personal space until I was forced to look up at his icy glare. "I’m sick of your games. You think I don’t know what you’ve been doing? You killed Vireya’s most trusted maid because she saw too much. You’ve spent months trying to sabotage the woman I love, lashing out like a cornered animal because you’re jealous of the power she actually deserves."

"I never hurt anyone!" I cried out, but he talked right over me.

"You’ve tried to harm Vireya a dozen times. All to keep a title that was never truly yours." He looked at me with such loathing that it felt like stabbing my chest.

Vireya let out a soft, melodic laugh and finally looked up, her eyes glinting with malice. "And let's not forget the theatrics, honey. All those red rashes on your skin? The way you look like you’re fading away day by day? We all know it’s just a desperate play for attention. You’re making yourself sick just so Kaelen will look at you."

She stood up, walking toward me with a predatory grace. "You even had the nerve to accuse me of poisoning you. You’re claiming I’m the reason for those 'toxic rashes,' trying to make me look like the villain while you play the dying martyr. It’s pathetic. Truly."

Kaelen stepped back, as if being near me made him feel ill. He looked at me with an expression so detached, it was like I wasn't even a person to him anymore—just a stain he was finally ready to scrub away.

"I, Kaelen Thorneclaw, Alpha of the Bloodhowl Pack," he began, his voice dropping into that terrifying Alpha register that made the very air vibrate, "hereby reject you, Selene Raventhorn. I sever our ties, I dissolve our marriage, and I break the bond that should never have existed."

The words were more than sounds—they were weapons that physically broke me.

"You are nothing to me," he hissed, his golden eyes flashing with a final, brutal spark of power. "Forget being my mate or the Luna. You're just another pack member now. You’ve been a ghost in this house for too long, and I’m done being haunted."

The moment the last word left his lips, the world exploded.

It didn’t just feel like my heart was breaking; it felt like I was being ripped apart. It felt like a hot, jagged blade had been shoved into the center of my chest and twisted until my ribs cracked. A scream tore out of my throat, but it didn't sound human—it was the sound of my wolf, howling in a void that had suddenly opened up inside our soul.

I collapsed to my knees, my hands clawing at the carpet. The mate bond, that golden thread that had hummed in the back of my mind since I was eighteen, didn't just snap—it withered and died, blackening everything it touched. My vision went white, then red. My heart skipped a beat, then two, as if it didn't know how to keep pumping without his rhythm to guide it.

The pain was so intense I couldn't even breathe. It felt as if my skin were being peeled back, exposing every nerve to the freezing air. I huddled into a ball, shaking violently, while a cold, hollow emptiness rushed into the space where he used to be.

The ties were gone. I was nothing more than a stray now.

Through the haze of my agony, I heard a soft, satisfied hum. Vireya stepped around my trembling body, her silk robe brushing against my arm.

"There," she whispered, her voice sounding miles away through the ringing in my ears. "Doesn't that feel... lighter, Kaelen?"

I looked up, my eyes blurred with tears, and saw him. He wasn't clutching his chest or screaming. Just looked relieved. He looked like he had finally stepped out from under a heavy burden. He didn't even glance down at me as I lay shattered on the floor.

The bond was dead. And I was dying with it.

"Get out," Kaelen said, turning back to the window. "I’m done with you for today."

I didn't argue. I stood up on shaky legs and walked out, the sound of Vireya’s mocking laughter following me down the hall.

In the nursery, I was watching Shaun play with a wooden wolf on the floor when the letter arrived. A servant I didn't recognize slipped it under the door and vanished before I could even call out.

My hands trembled as I tore it open.

Selene. There’s been an accident. Alpha Kaelen went to the old warehouse at the edge of the territory to check on the supplies. Someone set it on fire. He’s trapped inside. He’s calling for you. Please, hurry.

My heart hammered against my ribs. Despite everything—the insults, the coldness, the way he’d just looked at me—the thought of him burning alive sent a jolt of pure terror through me. I didn't stop to think. I didn't stop to ask why the servant was a stranger.

"Mom?"

I looked down. Shaun had stood up, his small face pale. He was looking at the letter, then at me.

"I have to go, Shaun," I said in a frantic voice. "I have to help your father."

"Don't go," he said in a tiny, choked-up voice. He reached out and grabbed my hand. "Please, Mom. Stay here. I don't like it. My tummy hurts."

"I have to, baby," I said, kneeling down and kissing his forehead. "I'll be right back."

"Take me," he pleaded, his eyes filling with tears. "Don't leave me here with that cruel woman. Take me with you."

I looked at the door, then back at his tear-streaked face. I couldn't leave him. If something happened to Kaelen, Vireya would have no reason to keep Shaun safe. I scooped him up, grabbing a heavy shawl to wrap him in.

"Okay," I whispered. "We go together."

When I arrived at the scene, the warehouse looked like a skeleton of wood and stone, tucked away in a ravine where no one could see the smoke until it was too late. The heat slammed into me, nearly knocking me back, and I could smell the hair on my arms singeing.

"Kaelen!" I screamed, shielding Shaun’s face as we ran toward the side entrance.

The door was slightly ajar. I kicked it open and burst inside.

The first thing I noticed wasn't the heat but the smell. It wasn't just burning wood and old grain. It was heavy, sweet, and suffocating. Rosemary, wolfsbane, and something else—something chemical and acrid that made my eyes water and my lungs seize.

"Kaelen?" I called out, but my voice was barely a rasp.

The door behind us slammed shut with a heavy, metallic thud. I spun around, grabbing the handle, but it wouldn't budge. I pulled with all my strength, my wolf screaming inside me to get out, but the handle was red-hot.

It was a trap. They hadn't just wanted me gone; they wanted the evidence of Kaelen’s "mistake" gone, too.

"Mom?" Shaun coughed, his small body shaking in my arms. "It’s hot. I can't breathe."

"I know, baby," I sobbed, pulling him closer to my chest. "I know. I'm so, so sorry. I shouldn't take you here."

The roof above us began to groan. Heavy beams, glowing red with embers, started to snap and fall. I backed into a corner, trying to find a spot that wasn't already engulfed in flames, but the floorboards were turning to ash beneath my feet.

The poison in the air was doing its work. My limbs felt like they were filled with lead. I couldn't shift. I couldn't even stand. I slumped against the wall, sliding down until I was sitting on the burning floor, cradling Shaun in my lap.

The wolfsbane was stripping away my strength, making every breath a battle. I looked down at my son. His beautiful golden eyes, so much like his father’s, were glassy and unfocused. He wasn't crying anymore, just gasping for air that wasn't there.

"Look at me, Shaun," I whispered, my voice breaking. "Just look at me."

He looked up, a tiny, weak smile touching his lips. "I love you, mom."

"I love you too, my brave boy," I said, hot tears carving tracks through the soot on my face.

The pain was everywhere now. My clothes were catching fire, and the skin on my back was blistering. But I didn't let go. I wrapped my arms around Shaun, tucking his head under my chin, trying to be a shield for him until the very end.

"It’s okay," I lied, my voice disappearing into the roar of the fire. "It’s okay. We’re just going to sleep."

The ceiling gave way. A massive beam, wreathed in blue flames from the chemicals, crashed down toward us.

I didn't scream. I just held him tighter.

My last breath rattled in my chest like a broken wind chime in a dying storm—shaky, uneven, clinging to the last flicker of life that no longer wanted to stay. Each inhale scraped like glass through my lungs, and still my body fought, even as my soul slipped further away.

I didn’t want to go—not like this. Not when everything inside me was still screaming for someone to help us. But no one came.

The world turned into a blinding white roar. The weight of the building came down on us, crushing the air from our lungs. For one final, agonizing second, I felt Shaun’s heart beat against mine—one last, frantic pulse that shuddered through his small frame and then went still.

As life slipped away from him and the poison worked its final, cruel magic, I didn't let go. I ignored the flames licking at my skin and the roof collapsing above us. I simply rocked his tiny, limp body in the wreckage, whispering a broken melody into his hair and lulling him into a deep, long sleep.

The silence that followed was the loudest thing I had ever heard.

I didn't waste my last breath on Kaelen’s name. My last thought wasn't a prayer for mercy. It was a curse. A cold, dark promise that if there was anything left of me after the fire, I would find a way to make them feel every single degree of this heat.

I spent it on a vow: If fate is cruel enough to let me wake up again, I’m not coming back as the girl who loved them. I’m coming back as the monster that destroys them.

And then—

Everything went black.
