But Ethan’s past and outside pressure lead to a devastating betrayal, breaking Lily’s heart. She walks away to rebuild her life, while Ethan, consumed with regret, must prove he’s changed to win her back....
Chapter 1
The first day of senior year always smelled the same: a stifling mixture of floor wax, industrial-strength vanilla air freshener, and the underlying scent of a thousand different perfumes clashing in the humid hallway. For Lily Carter, it was the smell of a finish line.
She clutched her lukewarm latte—a rare treat from her own workplace, the Morning Brew—and navigated the chaotic sea of students with practiced ease. Her mind was already three steps ahead, calculating the hours she could pick up at the café without letting her GPA slip. If she could just keep her head down for one more year, the medical scholarship would be hers. It had to be. Every night she saw the exhaustion etched into her mother’s face, she felt the silent pressure to be the one who finally lifted the weight off their family’s shoulders.
"Lily! Wait up! You’re moving like you’re on a mission!"
Lily heard Ava’s voice cutting through the chatter, but she didn't turn around. She was too busy checking her watch, her eyes darting between the digital numbers and the crowded hallway. Seven minutes to AP Bio. Room 302. Don't be late. Don't be—
"Watch out!" a voice shouted, but it was too late.
A group of freshmen, panicked and lost, swerved into her path. Lily instinctively dodged to the left, but her sneaker caught on a loose piece of floor molding. Her balance vanished. She stumbled forward, her hands flying out to steady herself.
The plastic lid of her cup popped with a sound like a muffled gunshot. The creamy brown liquid didn't just drip; it erupted, painting a jagged, steaming streak across a chest that felt like hitting a solid brick wall.
"Oh no. Oh, I’m so, so sorry—"
The words tumbled out of her mouth as she scrambled to find her footing. Lily’s breath hitched in her throat. She didn't even look up at first, her hands instinctively reaching into her bag for a clump of napkins. She was already mentally calculating the cost of a dry-cleaning bill she couldn't afford.
"I didn't see you, I was just—here, let me—" She began to dab at the dark, spreading stain on a white shirt, her fingers trembling.
Then, she felt it. A sudden, heavy silence that rippled outward from where she stood. The hallway, which had been a roar of slamming lockers and teenage gossip seconds ago, suddenly felt vacuum-sealed. People didn't just stop; they backed away, creating a ring of dead space around her.
Lily’s hand froze against the damp fabric. She slowly looked up, her gaze traveling from a silver chain tucked under a collar, past a sharp, stubborn jawline, and finally landing on a pair of eyes that looked like a winter storm trapped in glass.
The napkins fell from her hand.
Standing before her was Ethan Blake.
He didn't move. He didn't flinch at the heat of the coffee soaking through his shirt or the dark, sticky ruin of the black leather jacket draped over his shoulders. He just stood there, his tall, broad-shouldered frame casting a shadow that seemed to swallow Lily whole. His messy jet-black hair fell over his forehead, and his expression was one of absolute, terrifying neutrality.
"You," he said. His voice wasn't a shout. It was a low, gravelly hum—the kind of sound a predator makes right before it decides if the prey is worth the effort.
"It was an accident, Ethan," Lily whispered, her hazel eyes wide and pleading. She felt the heat rising in her cheeks, a fierce blush that felt like a brand. "I tripped. I wasn't looking where I was going, I—"
"You tripped," he repeated, his voice devoid of any sympathy. He looked down at the jacket—a piece of clothing that probably cost more than Lily’s mother made in a month. He reached up, slowly unzipping the leather and peeling it back to reveal the coffee-soaked shirt beneath. The contrast of the dark liquid against the white fabric looked like a battlefield.
"Do you have any idea what this is?" he asked, his dark eyes snapping back to hers.
"A... a jacket?" Lily managed, her voice small.
A few students in the crowd gasped. Someone whispered, "She’s dead. She’s actually dead."
Ethan took a step forward. He was so close now that Lily had to tilt her head back to maintain eye contact. She could smell him—not the coffee, but something deeper. A mix of peppermint, expensive cologne, and the faint, metallic scent of a motorcycle engine.
"It’s a vintage Schott. Limited run," he said, his voice dropping an octave. "And now it’s a vintage Schott with a latte-flavored personality."
"I can fix it!" Lily said, her voice growing more desperate as she saw the predatory glint in his eyes. "I work at the café. I know how to get stains out. I have professional-grade cleaner at home, I can take it and—"
"You want to take my clothes home, Carter?" Ethan interrupted. A slow, cruel smirk began to pull at the corner of his mouth. It wasn't a smile of amusement; it was the look of a cat watching a mouse run into a corner. "That’s a bold move for a girl who usually spends her time hiding in the library."
"I wasn't—that's not what I meant," she stammered, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "I just want to make it right."
Ethan reached out, his hand moving so fast she didn't have time to flinch. But he didn't grab her. He reached past her ear, his fingers brushing against a loose strand of her chestnut hair as he leaned his weight against the locker behind her. He caged her in, his presence an overwhelming weight.
"Making it right is going to be very expensive," he murmured. He leaned down, his lips so close to her ear that she could feel the warmth of his breath. "And looking at you—the old sneakers, the thrift-store sweater—I’m guessing you don't have a spare grand lying around."
Lily felt a sting of shame at the mention of her clothes. She lived in a world of hand-me-downs and budget cuts, a world Ethan Blake, with his CEO father and his custom motorcycles, couldn't possibly understand.
"I’ll pay you back," she said, her voice gaining a sudden, sharp edge of defiance. She was tired of being afraid. She was tired of the way everyone in this school bowed to him just because he had a dark past and a mean streak. "Every cent. Just give me time."
Ethan pulled back, his eyes searching her face. He seemed surprised by the steel in her tone. The coldness in his gaze didn't vanish, but it shifted, turning into something more curious. He looked at her not as a nuisance to be brushed aside, but as a puzzle he hadn't expected to solve.
"Time is the one thing I don't have much of, Lily," he said, using her name for the first time. It sounded strange coming from him—heavy and dangerous.
He reached down and picked up the empty, crushed coffee cup from the floor, spinning it between his long, tattooed fingers. Then, he dropped it into a nearby trash can with a hollow thud.
"I don't want your money," he said, turning his back on her. He threw the ruined leather jacket over his shoulder, the coffee stain visible to the entire hallway. "But don't think for a second you're off the hook."
"Then what do you want?" she called out after him.
Ethan stopped. He didn't turn around, but he tilted his head back slightly. "I’ll think of something. And when I do, I’ll come find you."
He walked away, the crowd parting for him like the Red Sea. He didn't look back, leaving Lily standing alone in the center of the hallway.
"Lily! Oh my god, are you okay?" Ava finally reached her, her face pale. "That was Ethan Blake. Do you know what he does to people who get on his bad side? Last year, a guy accidentally scratched his bike and he didn't show up to school for a week."
Lily didn't answer. She was looking at her hands, which were still stained with the remains of her coffee. Her heart was finally slowing down, but a new, cold realization was setting in.
She had spent three years trying to be invisible. She had spent three years being the responsible one, the girl who never caused trouble, the girl with the plan. And in thirty seconds of clumsiness, she had managed to tie her fate to the most dangerous boy in school.
The first bell rang, a shrill, jarring sound that signaled the official start of the year. Lily took a deep breath, wiped her hands on her jeans, and started walking toward AP Biology.
She told herself it would be fine. She told herself that Ethan Blake would forget all about a coffee-stained jacket by tomorrow. But as she walked, she couldn't shake the feeling of those piercing dark eyes on her back, or the way he had said her name—like a promise he intended to keep.
Senior year h
ad just begun, and for the first time in her life, Lily Carter’s plan was in pieces.
