Introduction
Chapter 1
Emily
I looked out the window of Alexander Hayes's apartment, trying to absorb the stunning view that so often made me forget reality. The city lights sparkled like stars, but tonight, their glow seemed dull, lifeless. Perhaps it was a reflection of how I felt inside. In my hands, Alexander's note burned like a cruel reminder that everything I thought I had built with him was nothing more than an illusion.
"This needs to end."
Three cold, dry, and definitive words. No explanations, no goodbyes. It was typical of Alexander. He had always been in control, and this time was no different. Five years. Five years of my life dedicated to a man who never saw me beyond what I could offer within the walls of that luxurious apartment. I thought that being the perfect, obedient, and submissive woman would be enough to make him love me. But I was wrong, and now, I finally had to face that truth.
I took a deep breath, trying to push away the knot forming in my throat. There would be no tears, not this time. I walked through the living room, my fingers sliding over the glass table where so many intimate dinners and whispered conversations had taken place. The apartment was full of memories, but today it felt empty, cold, just like I did.
I grabbed my purse and headed for the door. I didn't look back. Alexander didn't deserve to see my pain, and I refused to give him that power. He had always controlled everything, but now, walking out the door would be my choice. As the elevator descended slowly, I felt the weight of all my decisions. I wasn't the same woman who had entered that building years ago, full of dreams and hopes that I could be more than just the secret lover of a powerful CEO.
I walked out of the building with firm steps, trying to ignore the gaping hole opening in my chest. The cold night air wrapped around me, bringing a feeling of freedom mixed with uncertainty. I didn't know what I would do next, but for the first time, I was willing to find out.
Months went by, and over time, I began to rebuild myself. I switched my monotonous job for a new position at a tech startup that challenged me every day. I rediscovered a confidence I had forgotten I possessed. It was during this time that I met Michael Reed, a kind architect who treated me with the care I had always dreamed of. He was the opposite of Alexander, a secure, stable man who made me feel seen and loved.
Michael was easy to love. His warm smile, his hands that held me gently, and his words that made me believe I deserved more than what I had lived through with Alexander. When he asked me to marry him, I didn’t hesitate. It was the fresh start I needed.
We were at a dinner with friends celebrating our engagement. It was a light evening, full of laughter and toasts. As I watched Michael, I felt a peace I hadn’t experienced in a long time. Finally, my life was on track, and the past was just that—a distant memory.
I got up to go to the bathroom, wanting a moment to take a deep breath and soak in the happiness of the moment. But when I stepped out, my world stopped. In the hallway, leaning against the wall like he owned the place, was Alexander Hayes. He looked even more imposing, his dark eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made my heart race. He was the last ghost I wanted to see that night.
“Emily.” He said my name like a prayer, and each syllable reverberated through me in a way I didn’t want to admit. I was frozen, caught between the urge to run and the anger of seeing him there in a moment that should have been mine alone.
“I have nothing to say to you,” I replied, trying to keep my voice steady, even though inside, I was a mess.
He stepped forward, closing the distance between us, and suddenly the air felt heavy, charged with everything we had never said. “I made a mistake. I shouldn’t have let you go.”
My body reacted before my mind could process. I felt his hands pull me with force, my body pressed against the cold wall. His touch, his scent, everything was familiar and devastatingly tempting. Alexander kissed me with a fury that mixed regret and desire. It was as if he were trying to erase all the months we had spent apart, as if he wanted to mark me again, to make it clear that I would never be free of him.
I pushed him away hard, my eyes full of tears that I refused to let fall. “You can’t do this. You can’t just show up and expect me to forget everything.”
“Emily, please,” he pleaded, his eyes imploring in a way I had never seen before. Alexander Hayes, the man who never bowed to anyone, was there, vulnerable. But I couldn’t afford to believe his words of regret.
“I’m engaged, Alexander. I’ve moved on.” Those words came out of my mouth more as a reminder to myself than to him.
He ran his hands through his hair, visibly frustrated. “I can’t lose you again. I know I was an idiot, but I love you. I always have.”
The shock of his words was a direct hit, but I couldn’t give in. Not anymore. I took a step back, moving away from him and the past he represented. “You lost your chance to love me, Alexander. Now it’s my turn to decide.”
I left him there, with his late promises and regret. I returned to the dining room where Michael was waiting for me, smiling as if I were the most incredible woman in the world. And maybe, for the first time, I began to believe that I really was.

Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.
When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.
"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."

"Your Majesty... I beg—" He shoved me onto the bed. Silk tore with a sharp rip, cold air rushing over my exposed body.
"Scared?" He smirked, palm sliding down my waist, fingers tracing slow, burning circles. "Yet you shiver... not from cold."
I lunged for the candlestick, but he caught my wrist, pinning it overhead. His knee forced my legs apart.
"When your father gave you to me," his lips brushed my ear, voice a dark rumble, "you were already mine."

The CEO's Unspoken Love
Before I could answer, he moved closer, suddenly looming over me, his face inches from mine. I felt my breath caught, my lips parting in surprise.
"Then this is the price for speaking ill of me to others," he murmured, nipping my lower lip before claiming my mouth in a real kiss. It began as punishment but quickly transformed into something else entirely as I responded, my initial rigidity melting into compliance, then active participation.
My breathing accelerated, small sounds escaping my throat as he explored my body. His touches were both punishment and pleasure, drawing shudders from me that I thought he felt reverberating through his own body.
My nightgown had ridden up, his hands discovering more of mine with each caress. We were both lost in sensation, rational thought receding with each passing second...
