The Day He Asked for Divorce
Lyric Ross · Ongoing · 12.0k Words
Introduction
He thought he was setting himself free.
He did not know Eleanor Hayes had been waiting ten years for him to say the words.
By sunset, his new woman would be calling my mother cruel.
By winter, he would be standing on her porch with two suitcases and nowhere soft to land.
And my mother, who had spent nearly half a century opening doors for him, would finally learn how peaceful a locked door could sound.
Chapter 1
My father asked my mother for a divorce while she was slicing apples.
That was the part I remembered first, later, when everyone wanted the dramatic version. They expected tears, plates breaking, my mother dropping to a chair with one hand pressed to her heart.
There was none of that.
There was only the clean sound of a knife against a cutting board.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
My mother, Eleanor Hayes, stood at the kitchen island in her blue apron, cutting Honeycrisp apples into perfect crescent slices. She was sixty-nine years old, small-boned, silver-haired, and still capable of making a room feel orderly by entering it with a dish towel over one shoulder.
My father sat at the kitchen table as if he had called a school board meeting.
Richard Hayes had retired as superintendent three years earlier, but retirement had not softened the way he occupied chairs. Spine straight. Hands folded. Chin lifted just enough to suggest patience with lesser minds.
"Eleanor," he said, "I need to speak plainly."
My mother did not look up. "Then do."
I stood by the back door holding a bag of groceries I had brought after work. I remember the milk sweating cold against my wrist. I remember thinking Dad had that voice again, the one he used when he wanted selfishness to sound like principle.
He cleared his throat.
"I want a divorce."
The knife kept moving.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Outside, a lawn mower started somewhere down the block. Inside, my entire childhood tilted one inch to the left.
My father continued, encouraged by the silence.
"I'm seventy-two, Eleanor. I don't know how many good years I have left. I have spent most of my life doing what other people expected. Providing. Staying. Keeping up appearances."
My mother's hand paused on the apple.
Only for a second.
Then the knife came down again.
"Appearances," she repeated.
"Yes." He leaned forward. "I want peace now. Companionship. A woman who understands me as I am."
I looked at him.
He looked almost noble saying it.
That made me hate him a little.
"Her name is Marianne Cole," he said. "She's fifty-six. She teaches watercolor at the community center. She's gentle, cultured, thoughtful. She reads poetry. She makes salmon the way I like it."
My mother placed the knife flat on the cutting board.
The kitchen went very still.
For forty-seven years, she had cooked his salmon, his oatmeal, his low-salt soups after the blood pressure diagnosis he ignored whenever pie appeared. She had ironed his shirts before speeches, remembered his mother's prescriptions, hosted faculty dinners, raised two children, helped raise three grandchildren, and made every house they lived in look like stability had chosen them personally.
My father had just described another woman's salmon as if it were evidence of destiny.
The worst part was not even Marianne.
The worst part was the confidence. He delivered her name as if all of us should appreciate the refinement of his choice. Marianne was cultured. Marianne was gentle. Marianne made him feel seen. He seemed to believe those qualities explained the damage rather than decorated it.
My mother had spent a lifetime seeing him.
She had simply never charged admission for it.
I said, "Dad."
He held up a hand without looking at me. "Claire, this is between your mother and me."
My mother wiped her hands on her apron.
Then she picked up the plate of apple slices, carried it to the table, and set it in front of him.
"Fine," she said.
My father blinked.
"Fine?"
"Yes." She untied her apron. "When do you want to file?"
His mouth opened.
Closed.
It was the first time in my life I had seen Richard Hayes unprepared for a conversation he had started.
"I thought," he said slowly, "you might want to discuss it."
"You asked for a divorce. I said yes. That seems discussed."
"Eleanor, after forty-seven years—"
"Forty-eight in September," she said.
He flinched as if the correction embarrassed him.
My mother folded the apron once, then again, and laid it beside the sink.
"Tomorrow morning," she said. "County clerk opens at nine. Bring your identification."
I finally found my voice. "Mom."
She looked at me then.
Her face was calm.
Not numb.
Calm.
"Claire," she said, "put the milk in the fridge before it spoils."
My father stared at her.
"You aren't going to ask why?"
My mother smiled.
It was not a kind smile.
"Richard," she said, "I have known why for ten years."
The apple slices sat between them, pale and neat, while my father's face lost its color.
Then his phone lit up on the table.
Marianne.
No last name. No innocent contact label. Just the first name glowing between my parents like a witness that had finally been called to testify.
My father reached for it too quickly.
My mother placed one finger on top of the phone before he could turn it over.
The ringing stopped.
The screen went dark.
"Do not make her wait," my mother said. "You have made me do enough of that."

The Alpha's Stripper Mate
"What?" It was out of my mouth before I could stop it. I did not wait for him to answer me, I walked toward him.
"Dance on my lap."
My head screamed at me to turn around and run. But my whole body responded to his command.
"Yes, Alpha," I pulled my dress over my body, it dropped over my head and fell to the ground behind me. I was left in nothing but my matching bra and thong. My hands covered my chest on reflex.
"Let me see."
My hands dropped to my sides.
I lowered myself into his lap, facing him. His eyes peered into mine, and I could feel his hot breath fan my face. His dick responded to all my moves, hardening against my now-moist vagina. I swallowed hard, allowing my lips to part in a ragged breath. His hands trailed up to my waist.
"No touching."
