Introduction

Lucia Moretti spent her entire life loving Matteo De Luca — the future Don of New York’s most powerful mafia family.

He was her first love, her greatest weakness, and the only man she ever trusted completely.

Until the night he chose power over her.

At a glamorous mafia gala, Lucia believes Matteo will finally claim her after years of secret love and stolen moments. Instead, he announces his engagement to Bianca Valenti, heiress to a rival mafia empire.

Humiliated and heartbroken, Lucia disappears to Chicago, determined to forget the man who shattered her heart.

But Matteo refuses to let her go.

When dangerous alliances begin collapsing and old enemies rise from the shadows, Lucia is dragged back into the brutal mafia world she tried to escape. And the closer Matteo gets, the harder it becomes to ignore the feelings still burning between them.

Because some loves never die.

They only turn into obsession.

A dark mafia romance filled with betrayal, revenge, emotional tension, obsession, and slow-burning passion.

Chapter 1

Rain had been falling over Manhattan since late afternoon, turning the city into a blur of silver lights, black pavement, and reflected gold. From the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Moretti estate, Lucia watched water slide down the glass while classical music drifted through the ballroom behind her. The annual charity gala had always been a performance: expensive dresses, expensive smiles, dangerous men pretending to be respectable businessmen.

Nothing in their world was ever truly innocent.

Lucia wrapped her fingers around the stem of her champagne glass and forced herself to breathe normally. The ballroom was crowded with politicians, investors, lawyers, judges, and men whose names never appeared in police reports despite deserving to. Everyone wore elegance like armor. Everyone laughed softly, drank slowly, and lied beautifully.

She had been born into this world. She knew its rules. She knew how to smile while listening, how to lower her voice when names became dangerous, how to recognize threats hidden behind compliments. Still, tonight felt different. Tonight, beneath the music and candlelight, Lucia carried a quiet, foolish hope she had not admitted to anyone.

Matteo had said he wanted to talk to her.

For three days, she had replayed his message in her head until it became something more than a message. Maybe tonight he would finally stop hiding what they were. Maybe after years of stolen kisses, late-night calls, and promises spoken in dark cars, he would choose her openly.

“Lucia.”

She turned at the sound of Sofia’s voice. Her cousin approached with two glasses of champagne, dark curls falling over one shoulder as she glanced toward the center of the ballroom.

“You’ve been staring at him for the last twenty minutes,” Sofia said quietly. “At least try to look less obvious.”

Lucia looked away immediately, heat rising to her cheeks. “I wasn’t staring.”

“You were practically writing poetry with your eyes.”

“That sounds like something you would do.”

“I have better taste than to look desperate in public.”

Lucia almost laughed, but the sound faded before it reached her mouth. Across the room, Matteo De Luca stood surrounded by several men from his father’s inner circle. He wore a black tailored suit with no tie, the first buttons of his shirt undone just enough to show the edge of the tattoo near his collarbone. Even in a crowded ballroom, attention moved toward him naturally. Power looked effortless on Matteo, and that was the problem.

He never needed to raise his voice to control a room. People listened when he spoke because they knew exactly who he was going to become someday: the next Don of the De Luca family. Lucia had watched him grow into that role year by year, losing pieces of the boy she loved until only glimpses remained. Yet those glimpses had always been enough to keep her hoping.

“He said he wanted to talk tonight,” Lucia murmured.

Sofia’s expression changed almost invisibly.

Just for a second.

But Lucia noticed.

“What?” she asked.

“Nothing.”

“Sofia.”

Her cousin hesitated, and that hesitation was enough to make Lucia’s stomach tighten.

The orchestra continued playing while guests laughed and clinked glasses around them. Everything looked normal, elegant, controlled. But suddenly Lucia felt as though she had missed something important, something everyone else already knew.

“You’re scaring me,” she said.

Sofia looked uncomfortable now, which almost never happened. “I thought he told you already.”

Lucia’s pulse slowed with dread. “Told me what?”

Before Sofia could answer, movement near the front of the ballroom caught everyone’s attention. One of the De Luca men stepped onto the small stage beside the orchestra. Conversations faded as people turned toward him with practiced curiosity.

Lucia’s fingers tightened around her glass.

Across the room, Matteo finally looked at her.

Their eyes met for one brief moment, and the fragile hope inside her chest went still. Normally, that look steadied her. Matteo had always looked at her as if an invisible thread connected them, no matter how crowded the room became.

Tonight, his expression gave nothing away.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the man on stage announced, “thank you all for attending tonight.”

Polite applause spread through the ballroom.

Lucia barely heard it. Her focus remained fixed on Matteo as he moved slightly aside. A woman approached him from the crowd, tall and elegant, beautiful in a way that seemed designed to intimidate.

Bianca Valenti.

Lucia had met her only twice, but everyone in New York knew her name. Daughter of Lorenzo Valenti. Heiress to one of the most powerful mafia families on the East Coast. Bianca moved beside Matteo with flawless confidence and slipped her hand through his arm as if she had every right to stand there.

And suddenly, horrifyingly, everything made sense.

The unanswered calls. The distance. The way Matteo had become colder these last few months.

“No,” Lucia whispered.

Sofia touched her arm. “Lucia…”

But Lucia could no longer hear anything clearly. The ballroom blurred around her as cameras flashed and whispers spread excitedly through the crowd.

The man on stage smiled wider. “Tonight marks the beginning of an extraordinary alliance between two great families.”

Applause erupted immediately.

Matteo did not look away from Lucia.

Not once.

And somehow that made it worse.

“Mr. Matteo De Luca and Miss Bianca Valenti are officially engaged to be married.”

The words struck Lucia with enough force to hollow out her chest. The room exploded with congratulations and raised champagne glasses, but all she could hear was the violent rushing inside her own head.

This couldn’t be happening.

Two weeks ago, Matteo had kissed her outside her apartment. Three nights ago, he had called at two in the morning just to ask if she was awake because he could not sleep. Last month, he had told her, “When everything settles down, I’m taking you away for a week.”

Lies.

Every single word.

Lucia stared at him, waiting for guilt to break through his calm expression. An apology. Regret. Anything. Instead, Matteo rested one hand lightly against Bianca’s waist while members of both families approached to congratulate them.

Like Lucia meant nothing.

Like seven years of loving him had never existed.

Humiliation burned hotter than heartbreak. People were already looking at her. Some with pity, some with curiosity, others with the quiet satisfaction people always felt when witnessing someone else’s public destruction. That was when Lucia understood the cruelest part.

She was the only one who hadn’t known.

She placed her untouched champagne glass onto a passing waiter’s tray before her shaking hand could betray her. Then she turned and walked away. Not too quickly. Never quickly enough to look emotional.

Years of growing up among mafia families had taught her one important rule.

Never bleed in front of predators.
