Introduction

Fifty years ago, meteors rained down on Earth, bringing death and mysterious puzzle pieces that granted people animalistic powers. Those who found the pieces became known as Finders. Now the Hero Society rules the world, worshipped like gods. They protect humanity from the Toxins—a plague that turns people into monsters—and the Church sells holy water to keep the unholy safe.

Ren Sato grew up idolizing the Heroes. He dreamed of finding a puzzle piece and becoming powerful. He never questioned the system.

Then he watched his father get murdered by a Hero.

Now Ren is alone, grieving, and desperate for answers. When he discovers a puzzle piece hidden in his father's belongings, it bonds with him, giving him the power of a horse. But he's not the only one looking for answers. The Vendetta, the world's most feared terrorist group, claims the Hero Society is built on lies. They claim Ren's father was one of them.

Now Ren must choose: trust the system he was raised to believe in, or join the rebels who might just be the only ones fighting for the truth.

The truth they've been hiding.

Chapter 1

The boy pressed his face against the crack in the cabinet door, his small hands trembling against the wood. Through the narrow gap, he watched his father stand tall in the center of their living room, feet planted wide, fists raised in a Taekwondo stance he'd practiced a thousand times.

The three men who had broken into their home didn't seem impressed.

"Kenji Sato," the one in the middle said, his voice smooth and calm, like he was ordering coffee. "You made a mistake. A very, very big mistake."

Ren recognized that voice. He'd heard it on television just last week, during a press conference about the new anti-toxin initiative. Mark "Volt" Sterling. The Electric Eel. One of the most beloved Heroes in the city.

His father didn't respond. He just adjusted his stance, his eyes locked on the three men who had invaded their home.

"You should have stayed in your lane, Kenji," Volt continued, stepping forward. "You were a clerk. A nobody. Why couldn't you just do your job and go home like everyone else?"

"Because someone has to tell the truth," Kenji said. His voice was steady, but Ren could hear the fear underneath it. His father was afraid. His father was never afraid.

Volt sighed. He looked almost disappointed. "I was hoping you'd be reasonable. I really was."

Then he raised his hand.

Lightning arced between his fingers, crackling and popping like a thousand angry bees. The room filled with the smell of ozone and burning plastic. Ren's eyes went wide. He'd seen Heroes use their powers on television a hundred times. It always looked so clean. So heroic.

This wasn't clean. This was terrifying.

Kenji moved first. He was fast—his Taekwondo training made him faster than any ordinary man. He closed the distance in three quick steps, his leg whipping up in a roundhouse kick aimed at Volt's head.

But Volt wasn't ordinary. He was a Finder.

He caught Kenji's leg with one hand and released a pulse of electricity. Kenji screamed. His body convulsed. He dropped to the ground, twitching, his muscles spasming beyond his control.

"Please," Kenji gasped. "Please don't. My son—"

"We know about your son," Volt said. He looked toward the cabinet. Right at the crack where Ren was hiding. "He's in there, isn't he?"

Ren's heart stopped. His entire body went cold.

But Kenji was already moving again. He dragged himself to his feet, ignoring the burns on his hands, the smoke rising from his clothes. He charged at Volt, arms outstretched, trying to tackle him.

Volt stepped aside easily. He was faster. Stronger.

The two men behind him—the ones Ren hadn't recognized—stepped forward. One of them pulled out a gun. The other one smiled.

"Make it quick," Volt said. "We need to be out of here before the neighbors notice."

The man with the gun raised it. Kenji looked up at him, then at the cabinet where his son was hiding. His eyes met Ren's through the crack. He shook his head once. Don't move.

Then the man pulled the trigger.

-

Fifty years ago, the world almost experienced it's end.

It happened on a Tuesday. No warning. No signs. Just a sky full of fire and screaming. Meteors rained down on every continent, smashing into cities and towns, turning buildings to rubble and streets to craters.

The world experienced it's biggest Catastrophe.

When the dust settled, seven billion people had become four billion. The survivors crawled out of the wreckage, blinking in the ash-choked light, wondering what they had done to deserve this punishment from God.

But then the world found the rocks. The Fragments. Smooth and polished, like they'd been shaped by hands that didn't exist. They were scattered everywhere—buried in rubble, floating in rivers, resting in the hands of the dead. Each rock was shaped like a puzzle piece, as if they'd once been part of something larger.

The first person to touch one changed everything.

A farmer in what used to be Nebraska found a black rock in his destroyed field. He picked it up. It turned white. Symbols appeared on its surface—some kind of animal he didn't recognize.

The next day, he could lift his tractor with one hand. He could run faster than his horse. He could hear his neighbor's heartbeat from across the valley.

He was the first Finder.

Soon, others discovered they had powers too. A woman in Japan could breathe underwater. A man in Brazil could fly. A child in Africa could speak to birds. The rocks had chosen them, given them gifts from the animal kingdom.

But not everyone was happy about it. Some people used their powers for selfish reasons. Some used them for violence. Chaos spread across the world like a plague.

And then came the Toxins.

Nobody knew where it came from. Some said the meteors carried it. Some said it was God's punishment. Some said it was a sickness of the soul. But everyone agreed on one thing—it was terrifying.

People infected with the Toxins lost their minds completely. Their eyes went white. They screamed and attacked anyone nearby, and they didn't stop until they were killed. But the worst part was the strength. An infected person, no matter how small or weak they were before, became ten times stronger than a normal human being. A grandmother could punch through a brick wall. A child could throw a car.

The world was already broken. The Toxins threatened to finish the job.

That's when the governments of the world created the Hero Society.

The Hero Society had one purpose—to protect ordinary people from the Toxins and from those who would abuse their powers. They recruited Finders from every corner of the globe, the strongest and most heroic people they could find. These Heroes patrolled the cities, fought the infected, and kept the peace.

They became symbols of hope. People looked at them and saw salvation.

But the Hero Society couldn't do it alone. They needed the people's help. They needed everyone to stay vigilant. So they partnered with the churches to spread a message—a message that gave people comfort in a terrifying world.

The Church said the Toxins were a spiritual sickness. They said it only infected those who were filthy and unholy. They said that if you prayed enough, if you were pure of heart, you would be safe. And if you wanted extra protection, you could buy holy water—a blessed elixir that would keep the Toxins away.

People believed it. They had to believe it. The alternative was too horrible to consider.

So they went to church. They prayed. They spent their hard-earned money on holy water. And when someone got infected anyway, they whispered that the person must have been sinful. That they deserved what happened to them.

It was easier to blame the victim than to admit the truth—that nobody knew how the Toxins worked. That it could happen to anyone.

The poor suffered the most. They couldn't afford the holy water. They couldn't afford the protection. They were the ones who got sick. They were the ones who turned into monsters.

And the Heroes? They were there to stop them.

-

Ren Sato didn't know any of this when he was growing up. He knew the basics—the Catastrophe, the Fragments, the Toxins—but he didn't understand the politics. He didn't understand the fear. He was just a kid.

He had posters of Heroes on his wall. He watched their battles on television and cheered when they won. He dreamed of finding a Fragment someday—of becoming one of the chosen, one of the powerful, one of the people who could make a difference.

His father, Kenji, worked for the Hero Society. He was a clerk. He filed paperwork. He organized schedules. It wasn't glamorous, but it paid the bills.

But Kenji had been something else before the Catastrophe. He'd been a Taekwondo instructor. He'd owned a dojo where he taught children how to kick and punch and protect themselves. He'd loved his students. He'd loved his work.

Then the economy collapsed. The money dried up. The dojo closed. Kenji took the only job he could find—a desk job at the Society. It wasn't what he wanted, but it was what his family needed.

He never stopped training, though. Every morning, he woke up with his son at 5 AM and practiced his forms in the backyard. Ren would watch from the window, his eyes wide with admiration. His father was so strong. So graceful. So heroic.

But now it's all a memory.

-

The gunshot echoed through the living room.

Ren watched his father fall. Watched the blood spread across the floor like a dark flower blooming. Watched the life drain out of the eyes that had always looked at him with so much love.

He wanted to scream. He wanted to run out of the cabinet and fight those men, even though he was just a seventeen-year-old kid with no powers and no hope.

But his father's last words echoed in his head. Don't make a sound. Don't come out.

So he didn't. He pressed his hand against his mouth to muffle his sobs. He watched. He remembered.

Volt looked down at Kenji's body. There was no emotion on his face. No regret. No remorse. It was like he'd just stepped on an ant.

"Make sure he's dead," Volt said.

The man with the gun fired twice more. Kenji's body jerked with each impact. More blood spread across the floor. The couch was splattered with it. The wall behind him was painted red.

Ren felt something inside him break. Something that could never be fixed.

"Clean this up," Volt said. "I don't want any evidence left behind."

The other two men nodded. They dragged Kenji's body toward the back door, leaving a trail of blood behind them. Volt followed, stepping carefully over the mess on the floor.

Just before he walked out, he paused. He looked back at the cabinet where Ren was hiding. His eyes locked onto the crack in the door.

For a moment, Ren thought he was going to open it. He thought he was going to die.

Then Volt turned away and walked out.

The door clicked shut.

Ren waited. He counted to sixty. Then he counted again. He listened for footsteps, for voices, for anything that might mean they were coming back.

Nothing.

He opened the cabinet door and crawled out. His legs were shaking. His hands were shaking. Everything was shaking.

He walked to where his father had fallen. The blood was still wet. It was everywhere. On the floor, on the wall, on the furniture.

Ren dropped to his knees. He touched the blood. It was warm.

His father was gone. The man who had raised him. The man who had loved him. The man who had protected him. Gone.

Ren opened his mouth to scream, but nothing came out. The sound was trapped in his chest, clawing at his throat, suffocating him.

He cried instead. Silent tears streaming down his face. His body trembled. His heart pounded. His mind couldn't process what he'd just seen.

He sat there for hours. Maybe longer. He lost track of time.

At some point, he stood up. He walked to the cabinet where he'd been hiding. He remembered the box his father had shoved into his hands—the small wooden box with the strange symbol carved into the lid.

He opened it.

Inside was a black rock. Smooth. Polished. Shaped like a puzzle piece. It was the blackest thing Ren had ever seen—like staring into a void, a hole in the universe.

It radiated cold. Not temperature cold. Soul cold.

Ren held it in his hands. The blackness seemed to pulse, like a heartbeat. It felt alive. Waiting.

He knew what it was. But he didn't know what it meant.

But his father had given it to him. His father had said it was important. His father had said Ren would be the one to expose the truth.

Ren clutched the box to his chest and cried until he couldn't cry anymore.

-

The days after the murder were a blur.

Ren barely ate. He barely slept. He just sat in his room, staring at the wall, reliving that moment over and over again. The sound of the gunshot. The sight of his father falling. The blood.

He'd been so helpless. So useless.

But then he remembered his father's words. "One day, you'll be the one to expose the truth."

What truth? What was his father talking about?

Ren got up. He walked to the cabinet where he'd hid. He opened the box.

The black rock was still there, waiting for him.

He picked it up. It was heavier than it looked. Cold. Smooth. Like holding a piece of frozen night.

He held the rock in both hands. He clutched it to his chest. And he cried.

Then something happened.

The rock in his hands grew warm. Then hot. Then burning.

Ren tried to drop it, but he couldn't. His fingers were locked around it like it was part of him. Black light exploded from his hands, swallowing his arms, his chest, his entire body. The darkness consumed him completely.

Ren screamed.
