Marsh Media · Ongoing · 31.5k Words
Introduction
It was a lie.
Ten years later, sent to infiltrate the very pack she was taught to destroy, Kate comes face to face with its Alpha, Jesse Calloway — and recognizes the scar on his collarbone as the twin of her own. He's not the monster who killed her family. He's the boy who pulled her out of the fire the Guild set to start a war.
Now Kate has six days to choose between the only family she has left — a grandmother held hostage by the man who orchestrated it all — and the man whose trust she has to betray to save her. Fire and wolves, the two of them. It's only a matter of time before the truth burns down everything either of them has left to lose.
Chapter 1
KATE POV
The last time I stood this close to a Calloway wolf, I was seven years old and screaming into my mother's collarbone while our house folded into embers behind us.
I don't remember his face. I remember his hands. Too big for a kid's, dragging me over a windowsill that was already starting to smoke, shoving me toward the tree line and shouting one word — run — before the night swallowed him whole.
I've spent ten years being told that boy didn't exist. That there was no rescue in Millhaven. Only wolves.
Tonight I'm standing in the Calloway compound's great hall wearing a borrowed dress and someone else's name, and I am here to prove the Guild right.
"You're new." A woman with silver rings on every finger passes me a glass of something dark and unlabeled. Around us, the hall is full — humans in their good coats, wolves in their skin, the annual truce gathering doing what it always does, letting both sides pretend for one night that ten years ago never happened. "Millhaven family?"
"Distant cousin," I say. The lie comes easy. Lying always comes easy now. "Just visiting."
She nods like that explains anything and drifts back into the crowd, and I let my eyes do what they came to do — count exits, count guards, count the narrow hallway behind the dais where the pack keeps its records, sealed since the massacre, sealed since before I was old enough to ask why nobody would tell me what really happened that night.
Director Holt's voice is still in my ear from three hours ago, flat and certain the way it always is. Get the archive. Get proof the attack was ordered, not rogue. Get out clean. He didn't ask if I could do it. He never asks. He just reminds me, every single time, what happens to people who fail him, and lets me fill in whose face goes in that blank.
I set my glass down. I don't finish it. I never finish anything here.
The hallway behind the dais is unguarded for exactly as long as it takes the pack's beta to finish his toast to ten years of peace, and I use every second of it. The archive door isn't locked — wolves don't expect their own house to be robbed — and inside, the air smells like old paper and something colder underneath, something like grief that's been sealed in a room too long to air out.
I find the box marked MILLHAVEN in under a minute.
I don't get to open it.
"You're standing in a room that isn't yours." The voice comes from the doorway, low, unhurried, the voice of someone who already knows how this ends and isn't in a rush to get there. "That's usually the last mistake people make in this house."
I turn with my hand already curling toward the blade strapped under my skirt, and then I stop, because the man in the doorway isn't a guard.
He's the Alpha.
I've seen photographs — grainy, taken at a distance by hunters who didn't get close enough twice — but photographs didn't prepare me for the way he fills a doorway like it was built around him, dark hair, a jaw that could cut glass, and eyes that go through me instead of at me, cataloguing every lie I'm wearing in under three seconds.
"Jesse Calloway," he says, like I need the introduction. Like I don't already know exactly whose family tree ends in a name I was trained to hate. "And you're not anyone's cousin."
"I don't know what you mean."
"You do." He steps in. The door swings shut behind him with a click that sounds worse than a gunshot. "You've been counting my guards since you walked in. You held that glass for forty minutes and never drank from it. And you're standing in front of a box that's been locked since before you could vote."
My hand finds the blade. His eyes drop to it, unbothered, like he's already decided I won't use it, and worse — like he's right.
"Who sent you?"
"Nobody sent me."
"Try again."
"I don't answer to you."
"No." Something moves behind his eyes, quick and sharp. "But you'll answer to me before you leave this room, one way or another, so we can do this slow, or we can do this the way I'd rather not."
He's close enough now that I can see the collar of his shirt has come loose at the throat, the top button undone from a night of forced smiling at people who hate him, and there, low on his collarbone, half in shadow — a scar. Raised, pale, shaped like a hook.
I've seen that scar before.
I have the twin of it. Right wrist, same shape, same angle, the mark a falling beam left on me the night my house came down. I've stared at it in mirrors for ten years and never once let myself wonder why it looked less like an accident and more like it had been made to match something.
"Where did you get that," I say, and my voice comes out wrong, comes out young, comes out like the seven-year-old screaming into her mother's collarbone.
He goes still. "Get what."
"That scar." I'm moving before I decide to, reaching for his collar, and he lets me, which is its own kind of answer, because a man who could break my wrist without trying doesn't let a stranger touch him unless something in him already knows why. My fingers find the raised edge of it and his breath catches — actually catches, actually cracks the composed thing he's been wearing since he walked in — and I feel it happen in my own chest at the same time, a door I didn't know was locked swinging open on ten years of hinges.
Run. A boy's voice, too big hands, a windowsill already smoking.
"You pulled me through a window," I say. It isn't a question anymore. "Ten years ago. Millhaven. There was a fire, and you pulled me through a window and told me to run, and I never saw your face because I was too busy running like you told me to."
Jesse Calloway, Alpha of the pack I was trained from birth to help destroy, looks at me the way a man looks at a ghost he buried himself.
"That's not possible," he says, and his voice has lost every bit of the calm it walked in with. "The girl I pulled out that night died with the rest of her family. Everyone died. That's what the fire took."
"I didn't die."
"Then who told you a pack burned your house down?"
I open my mouth to answer, and the answer that's been true my whole life — the Guild, the wolves, the story I was raised on like scripture — turns to ash on my tongue, because if he was in that fire, if he was pulling children out of windows instead of burning them, then the monster I was sent here to destroy isn't standing in front of me.
He's somewhere else entirely. And I think I might work for him.

"Put her down," I try to command, panic threading through my thoughts. "You’ll hurt her."
"She’s ours," the beast insists, possessive and fierce. "Our snowflake."

But a human cannot survive the brutal political landscape of the North, and Rowan openly rejects the bond, dragging her onto a warship bound for a kingdom that views her as a fragile liability. Biting his lip, he stalks toward me, his hand going to the seam of his pants and the thickening bulge there.
"Are you sure you don't want me to touch you?" He whispers, untying the knot and slipping a hand inside. "Because I swear to God, that is all I have been wanting to do. Every single day from the moment you stepped in our bar and I smelled your perfect flavor from across the room."
