Introduction

"Sign the Brooklyn house over to Isla. I'll cover your tuition next semester."

Gabriel didn't look up. Just sat there in his leather chair like he was doing me a favor.

My mother grabbed my sleeve. "She has depression, Rachel. She just needs a studio. Why are you making this so hard?"

I looked at her, then at him. That house was the only thing my father left me when he died. The only thing. And my stepbrother was sitting in his leather chair, offering me a trade like it was nothing.

"That house is the only thing my father left me," I said. "You know that."

Gabriel finally looked up. "I know. Sign anyway."

My mother tightened her grip on my sleeve. I shook her off.

"Give me the pen."

I signed. Grabbed my suitcase — packed for three days — and walked out.

I had nowhere to go. I didn't care.

Chapter 1

Rachel's POV

I looked at the property transfer agreement on the desk and almost laughed.

My father's house. The only thing he ever left me. And here we were.

"Rachel, can you just not be difficult right now?" My mother Eleanor crossed toward me.

She was fifty, still beautiful, and she wore it like armor. That was what ten years of marrying into the Pierce family had bought her.

"Isla's show is next month. She needs a studio. Your father's place in Brooklyn — the light, the brick walls — it's perfect for her."

She reached for my hand. I stepped back.

She dropped her arm and kept going.

"You're in architecture. You're on job sites every day. What do you even need that house for? Richard would be so pleased — you'd finally be giving something to this family instead of taking. It would make things so much easier for me." She paused. "Can't you just do this one thing?"

One thing.

I gave up my guaranteed university spot for Isla. Eleanor made me change my application.

I took the blame when Isla smashed one of Richard's antique vases. Eleanor made me apologize to his face.

Every time, the same word. Consider others. Be the bigger person.

"That house is the only thing my father left me," I said. "You know that."

"Enough." Gabriel set down his glass.

Gabriel Pierce. Heir to the Pierce fortune. My stepbrother. He sat in the armchair with his legs crossed, gray-blue eyes flat as he looked at me.

I used to think those eyes meant something.

Once, when kids at school called me a freeloader, he'd handed me a handkerchief without a word. I spent years thinking that meant he was different.

He wasn't.

The second I touched anything that belonged to Isla — his precious little sister — he made sure I knew exactly where I stood.

"It's just a house," he said. "The Pierce family isn't going to shortchange you." He stood and walked over. He was a full head taller than me and he used it. "Isla's been under pressure with the show. Her doctor mentioned depression. She wants the house. So you're giving it to her."

"And if I don't?"

"Then we stop paying your tuition. Columbia, living expenses, all of it." No heat in his voice. Just facts. "And I'll personally make sure no firm in New York will take you as an intern."

He paused.

"Rachel — you and your mother have been living on Pierce money for ten years. Act like you know that."

"Gabriel—" Eleanor's face went pale. But she didn't push back.

She turned to me instead, voice sharp. "Rachel, are you really going to blow up our lives over a house? Sign the papers. Right now. If you don't, I don't have a daughter anymore."

I looked at her.

I looked at Gabriel.

Twenty years of making myself invisible. Twenty years of crying into a pillow and getting up the next morning and trying again.

Twenty years of thinking that if I was just patient enough, good enough, small enough, this family might finally feel like mine.

It didn't feel like anything anymore.

Something went quiet inside me. Not sad. Just — done.

"Fine," I said. "Give me the pen."

Eleanor blinked. Gabriel's eyes narrowed.

I walked to the desk. Turned to the last page. Signed.

The pen scratch was loud in the quiet room.

I pushed the agreement toward Gabriel. "The house is Isla's. Don't worry about Columbia — I'll figure it out myself."

I turned for the door.

"Rachel." Eleanor's voice cracked. "Where are you going?"

"My room. To get my bag."

"What bag—"

I stopped. Didn't turn around.

"You said you don't have a daughter anymore." My voice came out flat. "I'm just making it official. Stay here, Eleanor. Keep your life, keep your apartment, keep Richard happy. You don't have to be embarrassed by me anymore."

"You think you can survive out there on your own?" Gabriel's voice was sharper. "You walk out that door, don't come back."

I turned around.

I looked at him — this man I had built quiet teenage fantasies around, whose handkerchief I had kept in a drawer for three years like it meant something.

I felt nothing at all.

"I'd rather sleep on the street," I said, "than spend one more night here."

Fifteen minutes later I walked out with my suitcase.

Freezing rain. November. The kind of cold that gets into your collar and doesn't leave.

I stood on the curb and let it hit me.

Then I took out my phone and started blocking. Gabriel. Isla. Eleanor. Richard. Every Pierce contact, one by one, until the list was empty.

I hailed a cab. Threw my bag in the trunk.

"Where to?" the driver asked.

I looked up at the building one last time. Twenty floors of warm light. All of it conditional. All of it never really mine.

"Just go," I said. "Anywhere that isn't here."
