Introduction

Blurb

In Tumbleberry, honey is more than something sweet. It is a sign that the village is happy.

So when the magical Honeybells suddenly fall silent, Mabel Honeydew knows something is wrong.

Returning home after her grandmother’s death, Mabel inherits a crooked little cottage, a honey shop, and a garden full of tiny golden bees who seem determined to make her life difficult. Then she discovers a locked cellar, a backward-running clock, a forgotten greenhouse, and a letter from her grandmother with one peculiar instruction:

When the bells go quiet, listen to the people instead.

As Mabel follows a trail of small mysteries through Tumbleberry, she begins uncovering old secrets, unfinished conversations, and feelings the villagers have kept hidden for years. Along the way, a quiet clockmaker(gnome) becomes an unexpected companion, and Mabel begins to wonder if the greatest mystery is not why the Honeybells stopped ringing, but why her grandmother wanted her to come home.

Sometimes, finding home means learning where you have always belonged.

Chapter 1

First Person POV (Mabel)

The winding road between the seven green hills looked like a fairytale picture book brought to life. Wildflowers grew ridiculously tall beside the dirt path, their yellow petals brushing against low stone walls. On top of a fencepost, a fat bird chirped merrily, pecking a stray crumb off my sleeve before swooping into an elderberry bush.

I rested my heavy carpetbag against my knee and drew in a deep breath.

The air tasted sweet and rich. It smelled of warm bread straight from an oven, crushed lavender, tart blackberry jam, and a velvety trace of honey.

"If a village smells like bread and rain, darling, it is probably worth staying in," I whispered, echoing Marigold’s soft, chuckling voice in my head.

My grandmother had spent her whole life talking to the Honeybells. When she passed away two weeks ago, she left me her crooked cottage, her honey garden, and a letter with four simple words: Come home, the tea is getting cold.

I picked up my bag and walked into Tumbleberry. Children chased rolling hoops down the cobblestones, flower stalls bloomed with hydrangeas, and lavender smoke curled from stone chimneys. But beneath the warmth, a strange, prickling quiet settled over me.

Tumbleberry was alive, but its music was gone.

When I was small, the air was always full of chiming, hundreds of golden honeybells ringing like tiny silver bells in the grass.

Today, there was only the cold wind whipping through the valley. Not a single golden wing sang back.

I turned onto Berry Lane, my boots crunching on the gravel. Down the path, Mrs. Bramble stepped out of her bakery, wiping flour-dusted hands on her apron.

"Well, look what the rain dragged home!" she called out.

Before I could answer, she wrapped me in an enormous, warm hug that squeezed the wind right out of my lungs.

"Oh, Mabel, sweetheart," she said, her eyes twinkling. "Look at you! You’ve grown!"

"Everyone keeps saying that," I laughed, smoothing my skirt. "As though I was previously the size of a teapot."

Mrs. Bramble let out a rich laugh, but her gaze floated toward the hill past the lane. "Going straight to Honeybell Cottage, are you?"

"Yes," I said softly. "I need to unpack."

Her cheerful expression settled into something softer, almost guarded. "Your grandmother kept that place very well, Mabel. It was full of her." She quickly pushed two warm honeycakes wrapped in brown paper into my hands. "Take these. Go on now, before they get cold!"

Before I could ask what she was holding back, she gave a brisk wave and vanished back into her flour-scented shop.

Tucking the warm parcel into my pocket, I dragged my bag up the hill toward Honeybell Cottage. Standing at the wooden gate, my chest felt tight.

The cottage looked like it had been dropped into the flowers by accident. Its tiny windows sat at strange angles, the chimney leaned distinctly to the left, and wild honeysuckle squeezed the front door so tight it barely had room to breathe.

"Right," I whispered, turning the heavy iron key. "New start. Just take one step inside."

The door creaked open. The smell hit me instantly: chamomile, old paper, lavender, and sweet beeswax. Sunlight streamed through diamond-shaped glass, turning floating dust motes into golden stars over Marigold's velvet armchair.

On the hearth, an old copper kettle gave a sharp, sassy rattle, shaking its spout at me as if asking where I had been all this time.

"Oh, quiet down," I muttered. "It's only me."

At the foot of the stairs, I spotted Marigold's cedar chest on the top landing, a little honeybee carved right into the lid. Wanting to fetch it first, I grabbed the wooden railing and started up the steps.

CRACK.

The third step snapped completely. I yelped as my foot slipped through the fractured wood, sending the cedar chest tumbling over the splintered edge.

"Oh, no!"

Before the box could crash against the stone floor, a pair of quick hands caught it right out of the air.

I froze, dangling awkwardly on the broken stair with one shoe missing. Standing at the bottom was a young man with messy dark hair, sharp gnome ears poking through his curls, and a leather tool belt slung over his waist. His linen shirt was rolled to his elbows, and his apron smelled of brass buttons, linseed oil, and freshly turned soil.

He held the heavy chest as if it weighed nothing, looking up at me with calm, dark eyes. "You must be Mabel."

I cleared my throat, carefully pulling my foot out of the hole and stepping down. "I am. And you have very fast hands."

"Elias," he said softly, setting the chest on an oak bench without a sound. "I make clocks. Marigold asked me weeks ago to fix this stair before it gave out. I see I missed my chance."

"Only by a second," I said, my cheeks burning hot.

"Gnome hands are built for catching things," Elias replied, a faint, dry smile tugging at his lips. "Iron and stone always whisper right before they break. You just have to know how to listen."

He unclipped a brass hammer from his belt and knelt beside the step. Up close, I could hear a faint, rhythmic tick-tock vibrating beneath his skin, a cozy, grounding pulse. He pressed his thumb against the cracked wood and hummed a deep, low note. The splintered edges seemed to quiet down under his touch, settling into place.

"The oak is dry," Elias noted, rising. "I can brace it for tonight, but don't climb it until I bring my heavy tools in the morning."

"Sofa it is, then," I sighed.

Before I could say more, a loud, angry SCRITCH rattled from the dark chimney.

Crawling out of the soot was a bee, but it was the size of a summer peach, covered in thick golden fuzz with shiny black eyes and a furious scowl. It landed on the mantle with a heavy plop and glared at me.

"What is that?" I whispered, stepping back.

"That's Gregory," Elias said calmly. "He has a terrible temper. He ignored me for three months until I fixed his favorite brick in the fireplace."

Gregory buzzed loudly, flicking his head toward the wall. The big brass kitchen clock had stopped dead, its hands frozen right at five o'clock.

"I promised your grandmother I'd keep that clock running," Elias said, picking up his toolbox. "I'll be back tomorrow morning to fix it properly. And to rebuild your stairs."

"Thank you, Elias," I said softly.

He gave a small, polite nod and stepped out into the misty evening air, the soft tick-tock of his gnome magic fading into the night.

I was left alone in the dim, cozy room. Outside, rain began to patter against the crooked glass. Gregory let out one last grumble before curling into a fuzzy ball on the warm mantle.

I walked over to the back door, looking out into the dark, silent garden.

"I don't know how to do this, Marigold," I whispered into the quiet air.

And then, right through the sound of the falling rain, a sound floated up from the wet grass...

Ting.

I’ve had a gun to her head since I walked into her life.
She knows it.
And she still doesn’t run.
She just watches me back like she’s studying a problem she refuses to call impossible.
She’s the one variable I can’t control.

It gets lonely in a world you’ve already figured out.
So I dull myself down. Smoke the edges off. Pretend, badly, to be the kind of normal that lets people stay.
Then he walked in.
I knew what he was immediately. Dangerous. Intentional. Wrong in all the right ways.
I should be afraid of him.
I keep waiting for that to kick in.
Instead, I’m fascinated.
Because for the first time in my life… I’ve found something I can’t solve.
He is my deadly equation.
