Introduction

Twelve months of internship, top of my class in every evaluation. I showed up at Vanguard Systems to finalize my hire, and Ryan Caldwell blocked the door.
"The Aegis research position and security clearance nomination went to Madison. Five hundred thousand. Sign the NDA and walk away."
Madison Cole stood beside him. She knew her scores didn't come close to mine, yet a federal project access badge already hung around her neck.
"You understand what happens when you issue that credential improperly?"
Ryan laughed.
"My family owns this company. I decide who stays."
I didn't argue. I pulled out my phone and dialed the Federal Contract Oversight Office tip line.
The operator ran through standard intake questions until I gave her the security contact code my father left behind:
"Sentinel 257."

Chapter 1

"Emma, your internship ends today." HR director Mary slid the final decision across the desk. "Return your badge and equipment by three this afternoon."

I didn't touch the notice.

My final evaluation report sat on the desk beside it. Across the top, in red: [Application Declined.]

"My score last Friday was the highest in the group." I looked at Mary. "There was one opening in core research. And you're telling me I didn't get it?"

Mary avoided my eyes. "The company re-evaluated the overall value of all candidates—"

"Who got the position?"

The door swung open. Ryan walked in wearing a tailored charcoal suit, folder in hand.

Madison followed close behind. Not only had she traded up to a full employee badge, but a red temporary access card for classified areas now hung beside it.

"Madison got the position." Ryan slid an NDA across the desk, his tone casual.

I looked at Madison.

We'd been classmates in the same engineering program. After graduation, we both started at Vanguard Systems together.

Twelve months, and every one of my performance reviews landed at the top. She never cracked the top three.

Now she'd walked away with the one research position and was wearing a badge that required rigorous federal vetting.

"What was Madison's final score?" I asked.

Ryan's brow tightened. "That's not relevant."

"She didn't even hit the minimum threshold."

Madison's expression flickered.

Ryan smiled. "Emma, did you really think this company just needs someone who's technically competent?"

"This position should require at least that much."

"Technical competence is a dime a dozen." Ryan walked over and rested a hand on Madison's shoulder. "The Cole family brings Vanguard rare materials, funding, and Washington connections. Madison on the core team is worth far more than a scorecard number."

Madison leaned against the desk, her expression carefully arranged into regret.

"Emma, I know this is hard. But this is a partnership between two companies. I don't want to watch you torch your career over it."

"The person who took my position is worried about my career?"

"I didn't take anything." Something flickered across Madison's face—hurt, or a good imitation. "This is strategic. The Aegis project needs the Cole family's supply chain. If you push this and the investment falls through, how many jobs are on the line?"

She sighed softly. "I get that this stings. But try to see the bigger picture."

I scoffed. I had no interest in her version of the bigger picture.

"If it's about the bigger picture, why did you email the evaluation committee last night begging them to recalculate your score?"

I looked her in the eye. "That email proves you know exactly what your real score is."

Madison's composure cracked instantly. The color drained from her face.

"Enough." Ryan's voice cut through the room.

I ignored him. My eyes stayed on the red badge on Madison's chest.

"For project interests, you gave someone who doesn't meet the baseline an improperly issued classified access badge? Who authorized that?"

"I did." Ryan's admission was immediate. "I'm VP of Strategic Projects. Temporary access falls under me."

"You can decide internal positions. Bypassing federal security protocol yourself is a felony."

"Say what you want." Ryan tapped the NDA. "The records are updated. It's done. Deal with it."

I pulled a document from my bag and set it on top of the NDA.

"Original score: 94.7." My voice went flat. "Last night at eleven, while you were altering the database, I exported the operation logs in real time. Digitally signed and time-stamped."

Mary's face went white. She grabbed Ryan's sleeve. "Ryan, this will trigger a federal audit—"

"Not now, Mary."

Ryan's composure evaporated. His eyes locked on the evidence, jaw tight, face darkening.

He shoved the NDA back across the desk.

"Five hundred thousand dollars."

I glanced down. Beyond the confidentiality clause, the agreement required me to waive my eligibility for hire, my clearance nomination, and any right to dispute the results.

"Five hundred thousand?" I looked at him and laughed.

"Standard severance for an intern tops out at twenty grand. So the other four-eighty—is that to bury a felony for falsifying federal records, or keep me quiet when this hits Congress?"

Ryan slammed both hands on the desk and leaned in.

"It's to keep you quiet in this industry. Permanently."

His voice dropped, the professional veneer gone. "Sign it. Take the money and disappear."

"Refuse, and one call from me ends you. No defense contractor will touch you after that. The Caldwell name still means something. What makes you think you can fight that?"

I didn't answer. I grabbed the evidence and turned to leave.

"Walk out and this offer's gone!" Ryan's voice followed me, sharp.

I didn't look back.

Outside Vanguard Systems, I called the Department of Energy's Office of Inspector General.

"I need to report falsified federal project data and improperly issued classified credentials."

The operator walked me through standard intake, her tone routine, until I gave her the code my father left behind:

"Sentinel 257."

Silence on the other end.

When she spoke again, her voice had changed completely. "Ms. Reed, stay where you are. Investigators from the Inspector General's office are on their way."

Ten minutes later, a black government vehicle pulled up.

The lead investigator flashed his credentials. "Emma Reed? We've got it from here."

I nodded, my eyes drifting to the second-floor window.

Ryan thought the Caldwell name decided who stayed and who left.

Now I wanted to see if he still believed that with federal investigators standing in front of him.

He grabbed my hair and dragged me downstairs. His grip on my hands and feet ached terribly. I sobbed and wept, silent tears streaming down my face. I was powerless to break free, my left hand clutching my broken right wrist.

He was a beast inhabiting this mansion, inflicting inhuman torture on my poor soul. He had created a living hell for me, this pitiful girl, within his castle.

On this cold winter night, he threw my wounded body into the icy pool, arrogantly enjoying it all, drinking and smoking expensive cigars. A satisfied, cold smile played on his lips as he reveled in my pain. His face was filled with the darkness of sin.

“How...more...am I…still…standing?” I stammered, my lips trembling.

Zain paused, thinking. Then, turning away from her, he replied:

“Until you die!”

With that, he left. As he wished. At that moment, my wish came true; I died.

But not in a frozen pool; I was struck in the head by a bullet from afar, blood splattering everywhere—that was far more gruesome.

My consciousness began to fade, but suddenly, I opened my eyes again and found myself mopping the floor in an ordinary restaurant.

I was startled: What happened? I was reborn? This is unbelievable!
