The Lottery I Hid From My Husband's Family
Joy Brown · Completed · 11.4k Words
Introduction
What the Whitfields never once thought to wonder was that the quiet daughter-in-law they'd spent four years bleeding had almost three million dollars they couldn't see.
She'd hidden it for one reason: to keep the only good man in that family from being turned into their wallet.
Now they wanted his signature. His house. His name on their debt.
They had spent a lifetime underestimating the quiet one.
They were about to learn what that costs.
Chapter 1
The folder sat in the middle of Donna Whitfield's kitchen table, and every face in the room was turned to Cole.
"Sign here," Brittany said. "Family helps family. It's just a signature."
Hannah's phone buzzed in her bag. A bank alert. She killed the screen through the canvas before the number could light the lining. Two-point-nine million dollars. Not one person at this table knew it existed.
Cole had walked in thinking they were here for dinner. There was no dinner. There was a folder.
Brittany sat at the head of the table like she'd been crowned there. New blazer. New bag. Everything she owned was new and borrowed against a future that never showed. Across from her, Derek bounced his knee hard enough to rattle the salt. Beside Hannah sat Cole — the only good one in the room — and his hands had already started to open. Palms up. Reaching for a pen no one had handed him.
"It's forty thousand," Brittany said. "Derek hit a rough patch. The bank just wants another name on the paper. It doesn't cost anybody anything."
"It costs whoever signs it everything they own," Hannah said. "If Derek doesn't pay, they come for the house."
"Nobody's not paying," Derek muttered to his hands.
Donna folded hers on the placemat. She didn't look at Hannah when it mattered. She looked at Cole. "Your brother's drowning, sweetheart. You've got a good job. A house. You're the steady one. The steady one helps. That's all your father ever did, and nobody loved him less for it."
There it was. The dead father. Refusal turned into betrayal in one sentence.
Hannah had watched this family run that play for four years. The car, two Christmases back. The down payment on the house Brittany was sitting in right now. The loan no one ever mentioned again. They never asked for money. They asked for love, and then they cashed it. Last winter Cole drove ninety minutes in the snow to fix Brittany's furnace on Christmas Eve. She posted a photo of her warm living room and tagged the brand of the thermostat. Not him.
"It's nine days, Cole." Derek finally looked up. "The deal funds Friday. I lose the lease, the equipment, all of it, if the bank doesn't see another name by then. You want to be the reason your brother goes under?"
"He doesn't want that," Brittany said, smooth. "Cole's not like that. Are you, Cole."
Cole's jaw worked. Guilt went in through his shoulders and came out his hands, and his hands were open.
"How much do they actually need," he said.
Quiet. Already halfway to yes. That was the danger — not the number. The number Hannah could have wired before Brittany refilled her wine and never felt it leave. She had the phone in her bag. Ten seconds, and Derek's whole problem was gone.
She didn't move. The second this table learned she could, it would never stop eating.
And it ate. It had been eating Cole for years. He handed over piece after piece and called it family and got nothing back but the next ask. The truck. The weekends. The co-signed car that Derek totaled and never replaced.
"It's just a signature." Brittany slid the folder six inches toward him. "It's not like we're asking you for money."
Hannah put her hand flat on it before it reached him.
The table went still. Brittany's eyes came up and sharpened, the way a cat's do when something small moves wrong.
"What are you doing," Brittany said.
"Reading it." Hannah pulled the folder the rest of the way across, turned it to face her, and opened the cover. "Before anyone signs anything, we read it. All of it."
Donna's mouth thinned. Derek's knee finally stopped.
Derek's eyes flicked to the folder, then away. Fast. Hannah caught it — the look of a man who knew exactly what was on the second page and had been counting on no one turning to it.
"It's standard," Brittany said. Her voice had a new edge.
Hannah turned to the second page. "Then you won't mind if I check."
Brittany reached for the folder. Hannah didn't lift her hand.
"Sit down, Brittany," Hannah said, pleasant. "It'll take two minutes."
Cole opened his mouth. Hannah knew the word that was coming. Okay. He said it to his family the way other people breathed.
"We'll look at the paper," she said, before he could. "Tonight. Then we'll talk."
Donna's voice softened, which was worse than sharp. "Hannah. We're trying to keep this family together. You're making it a transaction."
"It's already a transaction," Hannah said. "It's got a signature line."
"There's nothing to look at," Brittany said. "It's a formality."
"Then it'll survive being read."

Nine months later, Lara breaks free from a concrete dungeon, only to find herself stranded in the lawless, rogue-infested wilds of Avers Land alongside four captured werewolf girls. Seeking refuge in the neighboring territory of Illyen, she expects to find a way back to her human life. Instead, she is brought face-to-face with Alpha Rowan, the terrifying, ruthless ruler of the frozen North.
One look into Lara’s eyes, and the Alpha’s world shatters. His eyes turn an absolute shade of black. The bond is undeniable. She is his fated mate.
But a human cannot survive the brutal political landscape of the North, and Rowan openly rejects the bond, dragging her onto a warship bound for a kingdom that views her as a fragile liability. Trapped between a mate who refuses to love her and a court of monsters waiting for her to break, Lara must use every hunter's instinct she possesses. After One Night with the Alpha
I thought I was waiting for love. Instead, I got fucked by a beast.
My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.
But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.
In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.
"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.
"Who the fuck is Jason?"
My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.
I ran away for my life!
But weeks later, I woke up pregnant with his heir!
They say my heterochromatic eyes mark me as a rare true mate. But I’m no wolf. I’m just Elle, a nobody from the human district, now trapped in Brad's world.
Brad’s cold gaze pins me: “You carry my blood. You’re mine.”
There is no other choice for me but to chose this cage. My body also betrays me, craving the beast who ruined me.

Well… Sometimes you just might turn out to be right.
It turns out, the fae stole my little brother. In his place? A pixie with boundary issues and a talent for home repairs.
I’ve spent my life taking care of everyone else. So when my baby brother is taken, I don’t hesitate. I walk straight into a faerie mansion and make a bargain with its infuriatingly charming master.
Kie is everything you’d expect from a dangerous fae, beautiful, political, and entirely too amused by me. Power wrapped in a smirk. Sensual, mischievous, and far too aware of the effect he has on people. He agrees to help me find my brother.
For a price.
Now I’m bound by a faerie bargain and navigating a world of glamour, manipulation, and ancient rules I definitely should have learned sooner, enchanted forests, political games, magical contracts, and a fae lord who treats seduction like a perfectly reasonable negotiation tactic.
Iron is how I keep people out.
Glamour is how he draws them in.
And apparently, they just don’t mix.
Oops. My Boss Was Seventeen
The Execution: Perfect. I brought him coffee, cheered at his games, and basically operated as his unpaid teenage executive assistant. He’s totally buying it.
The Problem: I was trying to network my way into the C-suite. I think I just networked my way into his bed.
