Introduction

"I'm giving you one month," he said. "To get used to this. To me. After that, I won't be asking."

I'm Eleanor Fitzgerald — or I was. The daughter they raised by accident, switched at birth, and erased the day the real one came home. For six years I've made myself small in my own house, and my violin is the only thing that was ever truly mine.
Then my father sold me. To Victor Sterling — the most feared man in Arcadia. A king of the underworld who put his own uncle in federal prison and built an empire on everyone who crossed him. The contract gives him my name for two years and ten million dollars. In return, I owe him everything a wife owes her husband — he made that clear before I signed. I was too shy, too reluctant, too proud to argue.
I braced myself for him to take what the contract says is his.
But he hasn't. He shows up when the room turns against me, and the room falls silent. He knows I can't eat tree nuts. He leaves his white shirt on my bed and tells me I'm Sterling now. And one night, with his mouth at my ear, he stops asking: I have one month to get used to him. After that, he won't ask again.
I told myself this was a transaction. Two years, a wire transfer, a clean exit. But nothing prepared me for the way he looks at me — or for the way my heart stops when he does.
One month. When it's over, will I still be his contract wife... or his?

Chapter 1

Eleanor

The family portrait had been moved sometime last month — from the main landing to the far end of the east corridor, wedged between a coat closet and a window that never got opened. I was fifteen in it, standing between Robert and Margaret with a Guarneri del Gesù tucked under my chin, grinning like I meant it. The new centerpiece in the foyer, the one everyone saw when they walked through the front door, was a three-person portrait: Robert, Margaret, Isabella.

I kept walking.

The music room smelled like coffee before I even touched the door handle. Dark roast, no sugar — Isabella's order, every morning. I noted it, went in anyway, set my case on the bench, and started rosining the bow. The Tchaikovsky score was already on the stand where I'd left it. Third movement. Eight days until the Royal Arcadia Hall performance, and Sebastian had pulled me aside after our last session to tell me the opening still wasn't landing. I positioned the violin and started from the top.

I was four bars in when the door opened.

Isabella didn't knock. She came in with her coffee in one hand and her phone in the other, wearing the silk robe she'd charged to Margaret's account the week she arrived. She moved toward the music stand the way she moved toward most things in this house — like the question of ownership had already been settled. She wasn't looking at the score. She was looking at me, with that sideways expression she got when she'd already worked something out and was waiting to see if you'd caught up.

Then the coffee cup tilted, and the whole thing went across the score in a wide dark arc.

I grabbed for the pages. Too late. The ink had already bled through to the second sheet — three years of margin notes, bow pressure markings, the fingering shift in the development section I'd been arguing with myself about since January, all of it going gray at the edges under my thumb.

"God, I'm so clumsy —" Isabella was already reaching past me for the cloth on the piano bench, pressing it into the wet pages with the careful attention of someone who had just had a genuine accident. "I'm so sorry, Ellie, I didn't even see the stand —"

"It's fine," I said.

Margaret appeared in the doorway. She came straight to Isabella, blotting the hem of the silk robe, turning the girl's free hand over to check her fingers for burns. Isabella let her, standing still with her coffee cup held out to the side, not pulling away, not saying anything.

"You're all right?" Margaret said.

"I'm fine, Mom."

I set the ruined score face-down on the piano lid.

"Eleanor." Margaret's voice dropped into that particular register she used when she needed something from me. "You should let Isabella have the room in the mornings. You can practice later."

"The performance is in eight days," I said.

"I know that. But she's family. You can be a little flexible."

Isabella had already drifted to the window, phone raised, looking out at the garden like none of this had anything to do with her. I picked up my case, folded the score as carefully as I could, and left.

Robert was coming out of the study when I hit the main hall. He covered his phone with one hand when he saw me. "Tonight. Black dress. The Aldrich dinner is at eight. Don't embarrass us."

"I have an evening session —"

"Cancel it." He was already back on the phone, moving toward the stairs.

I stood there with my case in one hand and the wet score in the other. Above the console table, the new portrait looked back at me — Robert, Margaret, Isabella at the Aldrich Foundation fundraiser, all three of them in formal black. The frame was the one that used to hold the photo of me at the lake house. The summer Robert bought the island up north and named it after me. Eleanor Island. I was eleven. He'd said it like it was going to mean something for a long time.

I went upstairs and started writing out the ruined notes from memory.

I'd been at Rosewood for twenty-three years. For the first seventeen, I was the only child in the house. Robert flew me to Vienna for my conservatory audition. Margaret sat with me in the waiting room with both hands wrapped around mine, telling me I was the best one there. That was enough, back then.

Then, six years ago, Isabella came home.

She was the real Fitzgerald daughter — switched at birth, raised in a group home in the Eastside flats while I lived in her room, practiced on her violin, answered to her family name. The DNA results took three weeks to come back. I still remember the afternoon Robert and Margaret sat me down in the study: Robert keeping his eyes on the desk the whole time he talked, Margaret crying and then apologizing for crying. Isabella showed up two months later, seventeen years old, with a duffel bag and a look in her eyes like she was already measuring every doorway, every face.

Within a week, the house had rearranged itself around her. Margaret, who had held my hands in Vienna, now held hers. Robert, who had named an island after me, now introduced her first at every dinner. I was still Eleanor Fitzgerald on paper, but the modifier had changed. The adopted one. The other daughter. The one they'd raised by accident.

They had promised, in those first weeks after the DNA results, to help me find my own parents. Margaret had held my hand and told me this was still my home. The searches went nowhere. After a while, nobody brought it up anymore, and I stayed — because leaving felt like walking out on the only mother I'd ever had.

I tried to make it work, at first. I gave up practice slots, moved sessions around, showed Isabella through the conservatory when she asked. Three days later my bow went missing for a week. After that came the rosin — glass powder in the tin on a Tuesday, right before a rehearsal. I told Sebastian I'd spilled it, bought a new tin, said nothing at home. The rumors at the Royal Arcadia started around the same time. Fitzgerald's adopted one. Not actually trained, she just has the connections. I didn't respond. I had the position because I'd earned it, and the people who mattered knew that.

Six years of it, and I'd gotten good at telling myself things were fine.

I found Isabella in the upstairs corridor that afternoon. She was leaning against the wall with a glass of champagne — four in the afternoon — and she straightened when she heard me coming, her face settling into the arrangement it made when she had something she'd been holding onto.

"Daddy talked to me this morning," she said. "After you left."

I waited.

"About the arrangement." She let the word sit there for a second. "Victor Sterling, Eleanor." She watched my face when she said it — the way you watch someone's face when you want to catch the exact moment something lands. "I almost feel sorry for you."

I kept my expression where it was. "When did he decide this?"

"It's already decided. He's been talking to the Sterling family office for weeks." She sipped the champagne. "I just thought you should know."

She pushed off the wall and went to her room. I stood in the corridor and listened to her door close.

The first thing I felt wasn't fear. It was disbelief. Robert and Margaret had raised me for twenty-three years. They'd flown me to Vienna, sat with me through every fever, shown up to every recital. People didn't do all of that and then hand you to a man like Victor Sterling. Not unless somewhere along the way they'd stopped thinking of you as theirs. I told myself Isabella was lying, or exaggerating, or just liked the sound of bad news too much to be careful with it. People said things in hallways. That didn't make them true.

Victor Sterling. I knew the name the way everyone in Arcadia knew it — from the financial columns, from the way a room went quiet when someone said it out loud. Twenty-two when he put his own uncle in federal prison. Twenty-five when the last inheritance challenger disappeared from the picture. Twenty-nine now, running the kind of operation that made other operations look like they were still waiting for permission. The Times had called him a butcher in a bespoke suit once. They'd meant it as a compliment.

I told myself it wasn't true. Isabella liked having information other people didn't. She liked watching you take it in. Half the things she said in hallways were designed for exactly that — the reaction, the flinch, the moment your face did something you hadn't meant it to do. This was probably that. Robert was difficult, and the house had changed, but this was a different order of thing entirely. This was not something he would do.

Then I thought about her face in the corridor. That particular stillness she had when she wasn't performing concern or surprise — when she was just watching, the way she'd watched me in the music room this morning before the coffee went over. There was no performance in it this time. No pleasure, even. Just the flat, patient look of someone who already knew how the next part went.

I pressed harder into the callus and stared at the ceiling.

Maybe she'd made it up. Maybe she hadn't.

I didn't know which one I was more afraid of.
