Chapter 1
He hung up on me while the killer's knife plunged into my body.
Seventeen seconds. That was our final call after seven years of marriage.
He was at the hospital with my "depressed" stepsister, convinced I was just being dramatic again. He didn't even let me finish.
I died that rainy night, taking a secret with me he'll never know.
Three days later, my husband—the city's chief medical examiner—caught a brutal case: female victim, face destroyed by acid.
He worked the autopsy with his usual precision. Methodical. Clinical. Until the facial reconstruction software completed its rendering.
When he recognized my face on that screen, blood exploded from his mouth.
He hit the floor hard.
Vivian's POV
My husband was performing an autopsy on my corpse.
My soul hovered near the ceiling of the autopsy suite, watching coldly as Arthur snapped on his rubber gloves and bent over what was left of my mutilated body.
Sulfuric acid had burned my face into charred craters, bone showing through blackened flesh. My entire body was covered in bruises from blunt force trauma and lacerations from a blade—the deepest one ran from my collarbone all the way down to my abdomen. Five stabs. The killer had taken his time.
"Jesus..." Jack, his assistant, inhaled sharply. "Who DID this?"
"High-concentration sulfuric acid to the face, multiple fractures, hemorrhagic shock." Arthur's voice was flat, his eyes focused and unreadable. "Whoever did this knew how to make her suffer."
Bitterness rose in me.
He hadn't noticed that strand of ash-blonde hair. We'd gotten it dyed together last Saturday—he'd held my hand and told me the color made me look like autumn sunlight.
That strand of hair lay right in front of him. He didn't even glance at it.
"Think we can get a facial reconstruction?" Jack suggested.
"Get the tech unit on it. Flag it urgent." Arthur nodded, his tone clipped.
Urgent.
How ironic. Three days ago, when I'd screamed for help on the phone, what he'd said was—"Vivian, ENOUGH. You're doing this AGAIN?"
The memory of that rainy night hit me all over again, raw and jagged.
I'd been dragged from the parking garage into a van. A masked man pressed a knife to my throat. The interior reeked of bleach and blood. With the last strength I had, I dialed Arthur's number.
"Arthur! Help me! Someone's trying to kill me!"
Music and laughter bled through the phone.
"Vivian, ENOUGH." His voice was ice. "You want this to END? Go apologize to Chloe. You OWE her that."
"I'm NOT making this up! Someone's really—"
Click.
He hung up on me.
The masked man lunged forward with a snarl, the blade drawing across my throat. Warm blood poured out. As darkness closed in, I had only one last thought:
Arthur... one day you'll regret this... regret not saving US...
"Dr. Harrison," Jack's voice pulled me back. "You think this could be connected to last month's serial case?"
"Same MO. High probability." Arthur examined my wounds with forceps. "But this one's worse."
Worse.
Because this time, the victim is your wife, Arthur.
You just don't know it yet.
I wanted so badly to see the look on that perpetually composed face of yours the moment you found out.
Night had fallen, and Arthur was still working late in the autopsy suite. He peeled off his blood-stained surgical gown and pressed his fingers against his temples.
Jack was cleaning up the instruments, glancing at the wall clock. "Dr. Harrison, it's after eight. Want me to grab you something?"
"Don't bother." Arthur's eyes dropped to his phone screen. "I'll wait."
Jack hesitated. "Are you waiting for Mrs. Harrison? She hasn't shown up in four days."
Arthur paused. He didn't answer.
"She used to come no matter what," Jack said quietly. "I remember last winter during that blizzard—the whole city shut down, and she still made it in with hot soup for you."
My chest tightened.
That day I'd driven two hours through the snow, slid into a ditch and dragged myself back out. By the time I reached the autopsy suite, I was soaked through, hands shaking so badly I could barely hold the thermos. Arthur had pulled me into his arms and said, "You idiot. It wasn't worth the risk."
Back then, I thought I was the most important person in his world. I would have driven through any storm if he needed me.
I never knew everything I'd given him meant nothing compared to one call from Chloe.
"We had a fight," Arthur finally said. "We're not exactly speaking right now."
"Oh..." Jack trailed off.
"Just say it," Arthur looked up. "The whole hospital already knows, don't they?"
"No, no," Jack waved both hands, then after a beat, couldn't hold it back. "It's just... maybe you could reach out first. Mrs. Harrison is really good to you. I've been here three years, seen a lot of doctors' spouses—none of them come close to what she does for you."
Arthur let out a short, humorless laugh. "You have no idea what she's really like."
My soul went very still.
No idea what she's really like? Arthur, when Chloe called you crying in the middle of the night, you walked out the door without a word. When I stopped you and asked why, you said I lacked compassion. When I found out you two texted more than we ever talked as husband and wife, you said I was paranoid. When I broke down asking where exactly I stood in your life, you said I was playing the victim.
Seven years. Was that really your takeaway from SEVEN years?
The autopsy suite went quiet. Just the clock on the wall, ticking.
Five minutes later, the door eased open.
"Arthur. You're skipping dinner again, aren't you?"
Chloe Miller—my half-sister—stepped inside carrying an insulated bag, her smile soft as a spring morning.
Arthur looked up. Something in his exhausted expression loosened. "Chloe, it's raining out. You didn't have to come."
Jack slipped out without a word.
"Vivian's been MIA for four days." Chloe set the bag on the counter and opened it. The smell of pasta filled the room. "Made it with the meat sauce you like."
"You're always so thoughtful." Arthur took the fork she offered, exhaling slowly. "Not like Vivian, always making everything about HER feelings."
Chloe paused. Something unreadable crossed her face—there and gone in an instant—before settling into a look of concern.
"Is Vivian... still upset?"

My breathing accelerated, small sounds escaping my throat as he explored my body. His touches were both punishment and pleasure, drawing shudders from me that I thought he felt reverberating through his own body.

“There are no limits between us,” he chuckled, the mirth sparkling in his gorgeous eyes. “And all of this stems from the night you gave me both pain and pleasure. I’m simply returning the favor.”
He took two steps forward, and I stepped back. “But…” The memory of what I had done filled me with fear, and I knew I had to get out of there. “I…”
“No, Firecat.” He placed an index finger on my lips. “This will take your mind off that son of a bitch.” His strong hands pulled me by the waist until I felt his hard manhood.

"Scared?" He smirked, palm sliding down my waist, fingers tracing slow, burning circles. "Yet you shiver... not from cold."
I lunged for the candlestick, but he caught my wrist, pinning it overhead. His knee forced my legs apart.
"When your father gave you to me," his lips brushed my ear, voice a dark rumble, "you were already mine."

On that island I learned the darkest edges of humanity and how to bury terror in bone. Countless times I wanted to surrender—dive into the waves and never surface—but the accusing faces that haunted my dreams pushed me back toward something colder than survival: revenge. I escaped, and for three years I hid among humans, collecting secrets, learning to move like a shadow, sharpening patience into precision—becoming a blade.
Then, under a full moon, I touched a bleeding stranger—and my wolf returned with a violence that made me whole. Who was he? Why could he wake what I'd thought dead?
One thing I know: now is the time.
I have waited three years for this. I will make everyone who destroyed me pay—and take back everything that was stolen from me.
