Introduction

I loved him for ten years. I was his wife for three.
He knew every sound I made in his bed. He never knew why I flinched at the smell of almonds.
He relied on the life I built around him. He never knew I spent six years teaching orphaned kids to bake. I never told him—because he never asked.
I left quietly. No cheating. No screaming. Just three years of him not loving me.
Now I'm running my own bakery in Brooklyn. And he's found me—with his money, his power, his everything except the one thing I ever wanted.
He only started looking when I was already gone.
And I'm tired of loving a man who needed me to leave before he could see me.

Chapter 1

Nora POV

My name is Nora Bennett. I'm twenty-six years old, and in thirty days, I'm going to stop being someone's wife.

The someone is Adrian Cross. If you move in certain circles in this city, you already know the name — Cross Capital, Manhattan Financial District, thirty-second floor with a view that makes people forget what they came to say.

If you don't move in those circles, the short version is this: he's twenty-nine, he runs a mid-market acquisition fund that his grandfather started and he rebuilt from scratch at twenty-four, and he is, by every visible measure, exactly the kind of man you'd expect a woman to spend three years trying to hold on to.

I'm not trying to hold on to him. That's the part that takes some explaining.

The marriage was Margaret's idea — Margaret Cross, Adrian's grandmother, the woman who took me in when I was eleven years old and my parents were gone and there was no one else. She didn't adopt me.

She arranged for a guardianship, set me up in the guest cottage on the Connecticut estate, and made sure I had Elena, and school, and enough distance from the main house to understand exactly where I stood. I was grateful.

I still am. Gratitude and belonging are not the same thing, and I learned that early enough that it didn't surprise me when, at twenty-three, Margaret called me into the sitting room and told me she was dying and that she had one last arrangement she wanted to make.

A three-year contract marriage between me and Adrian. Enough time, she said, for the Cross family trust to satisfy its succession terms, for Adrian to establish credibility with the more conservative institutional investors who still cared about that kind of thing, and — though she didn't say this part out loud — enough time for two people she loved to find their way to each other.

I said yes. I said yes because I had loved Adrian since I was sixteen years old and too young to know that loving someone quietly, from the wrong side of a guest cottage door, does not make you visible to them.

I said yes because Margaret was dying and I couldn't refuse her. I said yes because I told myself that three years was long enough for something real to happen, and I was twenty-three, and I still believed that if you were patient enough and present enough and careful enough not to ask for too much, people eventually turned around and saw you standing there.

Three years later, I know better.

It wasn't that the marriage was miserable. That would have been easier, in some ways — a clean injury, something you could point to.

Adrian was never cruel. He was never unfaithful. He came home.

He remembered my preferences without being asked. He kept every term of the agreement. In bed, he wanted me — genuinely, consistently, with the kind of physical attention that used to make me lie awake afterward and tell myself it meant something.

I wanted him too. I still do, if I'm honest, which is its own particular humiliation: to love someone with your whole body and understand, finally, that what they feel for you lives only there.

The morning I understood this clearly — not as a fear, not as a suspicion, but as a fact I was done arguing with — was three weeks ago.

Adrian reached for me in the half-dark before his alarm, the way he always did, unhurried and certain of his welcome, and I moved away. Not dramatically. I just shifted to my side of the bed and said I was tired.

He let me go. He didn't ask why.

And that was the thing. After three years, he didn't ask why. He went to shower, and I lay there listening to the water run, and I thought: he's not confused. He's not worried. He's not even particularly disappointed.

He's fine. He has always been fine.

I was the one who had been building something out of proximity and patience and the way he looked at me sometimes across a room, and I was the only one who knew it.

I stopped making his coffee the next morning. I stopped leaving the light on in the front hall when he worked late.

Small things — the kind of things you don't notice you've been doing until you stop, and then the absence sits in the room like a piece of furniture someone moved two inches to the left. I don't think he's connected it yet.

I don't think he knows what I've been quietly dismantling.

Thirty days from now, he'll have the whole picture.

The leasing agent called me Mrs. Cross three times before I asked her to stop.

She didn't mean anything by it. She'd pulled the name from the background check paperwork — the same stack of documents that had spent the last two weeks confirming that I was creditworthy enough to lease eight hundred square feet of commercial kitchen space in Cobble Hill without a co-signer.

The name on those documents was Nora Cross, and it was technically still correct, and it would be for another thirty days, and I was so tired of it I could feel the tiredness behind my back teeth.

"There's a small correction," I said, when she slid the final lease across the desk. "The name. It should be Nora Bennett."

She blinked, recovered. "Of course. Is that a doing-business-as, or—"

"It's my name," I said. "My name before I was married."

She nodded and asked, with the careful tone of someone who has learned to make every question sound routine, whether I'd like to add my husband or Cross Capital as a guarantor, since my personal financials were substantially lower than the household income reflected in the background materials.

It was a reasonable question. It was also the question I'd been rehearsing an answer to for six weeks, since Rosa and I had first walked through this space on a Tuesday afternoon in January, and I'd stood in the empty kitchen breathing in cold cement and the ghost of someone else's grease, and felt something settle in my chest that I hadn't felt in a long time.

Certainty. Not the borrowed kind, not the kind that comes from standing next to someone powerful and letting their confidence pass through you like a current. The kind that comes from looking at a thing and knowing you can build it.

"No guarantor," I said. "The loan is mine. The lease is mine."

She smiled — politely, with a small amount of concern underneath it — and excused herself to have the contract reprinted. I walked to the window.

The street below was doing what Brooklyn streets do on a gray Wednesday in late February: moving, unhurried, indifferent to being watched. A woman pushed a stroller one-handed and held a coffee cup with the other. Two men in paint-spattered work pants stood outside the hardware store arguing about something that made one of them laugh.

The building across the street had a hand-lettered sign in the window: CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS — BACK IN SPRING. I stood there longer than I needed to, hoping, with an intensity that surprised me, that they would make it.

My phone buzzed. Rosa.

"Tell me you didn't let them put the Cross name on the guarantor line," she said, no greeting.

"I didn't."

"Good." I heard her exhale slowly.

Her particular silence — the one she uses when she thinks I'm making the harder choice on purpose and has decided to respect it anyway. "Are you sure about this?"

"I need to know I can keep the lights on after I stop being his wife," I said. "If his name is on this lease, I'll never know if I could have done it without him."

A beat. Then: "Okay. Call me when you have the keys."

The agent came back with the reprinted contract. I sat down, uncapped the pen, and signed Nora Bennett in full — slower than my usual signature, each letter deliberate, like something I was relearning after a long time away from it. The ring caught slightly against the paper as I finished. I looked at it for a second: still on my finger, still where it was supposed to be, for twenty-nine more days.

I put the pen down and took the copy the agent offered.

"Congratulations," she said warmly. "This is a wonderful space for a fresh start."

"Thank you," I said, because she meant it kindly, and kindness deserves acknowledgment even when it lands a little sideways.

She handed me the key in a small envelope. Plain commercial key, nothing remarkable — the kind that comes in sets of three from a hardware store.

I put it in the interior pocket of my bag, the one I use for things I can't afford to lose, and I thought about the brass key rack by the front door of the penthouse — the long one I'd chosen and installed myself, where Adrian's keys and my keys and the dry cleaning tags all hung together in an arrangement that had looked, to anyone who came through that door, like an ordinary shared life.

This key was not going on that rack.

On the elevator down, I opened my calendar and added a new entry for today's date: Second Rise — keys received. Below it, already there and unmovable, was the entry I'd added six months ago when the lawyers confirmed the timeline: Final signing — 10:00 a.m. Thirty days out.

I looked at both entries on the same screen. The first one new, the second one inevitable, and both of them mine.

The elevator doors opened onto the street, and I stepped out into the cold, and for the first time in a long time, the cold felt like something I had chosen.

He grabbed my hair and dragged me downstairs. His grip on my hands and feet ached terribly. I sobbed and wept, silent tears streaming down my face. I was powerless to break free, my left hand clutching my broken right wrist.

He was a beast inhabiting this mansion, inflicting inhuman torture on my poor soul. He had created a living hell for me, this pitiful girl, within his castle.

On this cold winter night, he threw my wounded body into the icy pool, arrogantly enjoying it all, drinking and smoking expensive cigars. A satisfied, cold smile played on his lips as he reveled in my pain. His face was filled with the darkness of sin.

“How...more...am I…still…standing?” I stammered, my lips trembling.

Zain paused, thinking. Then, turning away from her, he replied:

“Until you die!”

With that, he left. As he wished. At that moment, my wish came true; I died.

But not in a frozen pool; I was struck in the head by a bullet from afar, blood splattering everywhere—that was far more gruesome.

My consciousness began to fade, but suddenly, I opened my eyes again and found myself mopping the floor in an ordinary restaurant.

I was startled: What happened? I was reborn? This is unbelievable!

My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.

But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.

In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.

"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.

"Who the fuck is Jason?"

My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.

I ran away for my life!

But weeks later, I woke up pregnant with his heir!

They say my heterochromatic eyes mark me as a rare true mate. But I’m no wolf. I’m just Elle, a nobody from the human district, now trapped in Brad's world.
