Chapter 1
After five years, she could finally see!
Catherine Spencer removed the gauze from her eyes, and the entire psychiatric hospital came into view.
Richard Rivers had been away on business for two months and was coming back to see her today.
She had to tell him this wonderful surprise.
He'd said that once her eyes got better, she could move back home and see her own child!
Catherine was about to walk out of the psychiatric hospital to look at the street scene.
But suddenly she heard a woman's seductive moaning. Following the sound, she saw a Porsche by the roadside, shaking.
"Slow down, someone might see us!"
A woman's foot in red high heels stuck out of the car window, and she could see a man's large hand gripping the woman's thigh hard.
"You're the one who seduced me here. Isn't this exactly what you wanted - to be seen?"
People were actually having sex in broad daylight at the entrance of a psychiatric hospital.
Catherine felt embarrassed, but the man's voice sounded somewhat familiar. She couldn't help but take a few more looks.
She could only make out the man's suit and his body moving up and down. Just from the car's shaking, you could tell how wild it was inside.
The two people seemed to keep changing positions, and the woman appeared to be wearing lingerie that had already been torn to shreds.
Catherine was shocked. This was daytime and in a car - were they really that desperate?
And it was so intense, like the whole car was about to break apart.
If she still couldn't see like before, she might have thought this was some porn shoot.
She just didn't know why, but the voices inside seemed strangely familiar.
She felt too awkward to keep listening at the entrance, so she went into the psychiatric hospital and sat on a bench under a tree.
Every time Richard came, they would sit here together.
Before long, Richard rushed over.
He spoke gently, "Catherine, have you been waiting long? Sorry, the company's been really busy lately."
Catherine shook her head obediently. "I understand."
After she spoke, she suddenly noticed the wrinkles on Richard's clothes.
After years of marriage, she knew he had serious OCD about cleanliness.
And this outfit - why did it look so much like what the man in the car was wearing?
Catherine's heart instinctively tightened.
Her expression didn't escape Richard's eyes. Richard tensed up for a moment too, but then relaxed, remembering Catherine's eyes.
What could a blind woman see?
Catherine probed, "I think I smell perfume on you, a really sweet scent."
Obviously it was women's perfume.
Richard brushed it off casually. "I just met with a client on the way here to discuss a deal. He brought his wife."
Catherine's heart relaxed slightly. Maybe she was overthinking it. Maybe it was just a coincidence.
She unconsciously gripped the corner of her clothes and spoke again, "The doctor says I'm recovering well. Once my eyes can see, I can leave here, right? I don't want to live here anymore."
Richard's brow furrowed, but his voice remained gentle and reassuring. "Yes, once your eyes are better, our family of three can be reunited."
Catherine's lips curved into a smile. "Can you bring Ethan to see me? I miss him so much."
Richard's expression stiffened, and he made up an excuse. "Ethan's been taking classes lately. I'll bring him when he has time."
Catherine's grip tightened.
This was the who-knows-how-many-th time she'd asked to see her son, but every time Richard put her off with various excuses.
Before, when she couldn't see, she could only guess from his tone, but now she could clearly see the annoyance in Richard's eyes.
She remembered when she was first sent to the psychiatric hospital, Richard came to see her every day, holding her, feeling sorry that she had to stay here.
After all, the Smith family matter hadn't been completely resolved. If she left here, she'd be prosecuted for intentional harm and sent to prison.
Catherine asked, "When will you come see me next?"
Richard made up an excuse casually. "Depends on work. I'll come whenever I'm free."
Catherine didn't respond.
She'd actually been keeping track of Richard's visits - from coming every day at first, feeling sorry for her in the psychiatric hospital, to every few days, to now once every two months.
She negotiated carefully, "Can I live at the villa? I promise I won't go out, nobody outside will see me."
Richard's brow immediately furrowed. "Catherine, I went through so much trouble to get you into the psychiatric hospital to avoid prison time. Do you have to make trouble for me at this critical moment? If something goes wrong, can you handle the consequences?"
Catherine bit her lower lip. "But..."
But when Richard sent her to the psychiatric hospital, he used the exact reason that she wouldn't be discovered.
If she lived at the villa and didn't go out, wouldn't that achieve the same result? Why wouldn't he agree?
"There's no 'but.' My current arrangement for you is the best."
Richard's voice carried impatience. "Back then you intentionally hurt someone and caused such serious public opinion. If you're not punished, the Smith family won't let it go. Do you want to see the Harrison family and the Rivers family go bankrupt?"
The light in Catherine's eyes dimmed inch by inch. "I understand."
Seeing that he'd dismissed Catherine's idea, Richard breathed a slight sigh of relief.
If Catherine really went to the villa, he'd have no reason to keep her from seeing their son.
Catherine lowered her head, her lashes hiding the emotion in her eyes.
She wasn't stupid. She could feel the change in Richard's attitude.
He came less and less frequently, stayed shorter and shorter, and got more and more messages on his phone.
Each time this happened, she would obediently let Richard go take care of work matters first.
She had no one bothering her in the psychiatric hospital. Although she couldn't see, many people took care of her.
The only thing she longed for was her son, but Richard kept refusing to let her see him.
Catherine thought back on these details, her heart growing colder and colder.
But just then, Richard suddenly hugged her and said tenderly, "Honey, just give me a little more time. We'll be reunited soon."
Catherine was about to nod when Richard's phone got a new message.
He looked down to unlock it, and Catherine saw the message screen too.
It was a very explicit photo of a woman in lingerie taking a mirror selfie.
And she recognized that person.
Her half-sister, and Richard's childhood friend, Juniper Spencer!
Juniper: [My performance in the car wasn't great. Want to try again tonight? I've prepared lots of new tricks.]
Catherine's blood seemed to freeze, her heart full of shock.
Her husband was sleeping with her sister?
She couldn't believe it.
Just minutes before coming to the psychiatric hospital, her beloved husband had been having sex with Juniper in the car, then came to visit her pretending nothing happened.
In that instant, Catherine felt unspeakable sadness and disgust rise in her heart.
No wonder he came less and less often, with longer and longer gaps - turns out during these years while she was in the psychiatric hospital, he'd been hooking up with another woman.
This sudden betrayal made Catherine feel like she'd fallen into an ice pit, trembling uncontrollably.

Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.
When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.
"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."

The Human Among Wolves
My stomach twisted, but he wasn’t finished.
"You're just a pathetic little human," Zayn said, his words deliberate, each one hitting like a slap. "Spreading your legs for the first guy who bothers to notice you."
Heat rushed to my face, burning with humiliation. My chest ached — not from his words alone, but from the sick realization that I had trusted him. That I had let myself believe he was different.
I was so, so stupid.
