What the Heart Wants

Introduction
Not loving him will cost more.
Derek has one goal: survive high school without drawing too much attention or pissing off his pack’s alpha.
As the youngest son of the alpha, his life is governed by lycan hierarchy, tradition, and politics. With no signs of awakening a lycan spirit, his only value is what he can do for the pack’s image. He knows he’s only ever one misstep away from exile… or worse.
Then, he finds a boy trapped in a locker on orientation day, and everything changes.
Derek shouldn’t want Nikolias. He’s off-limits. A risk Derek can’t afford.
So why does it feel like he’s the only thing worth fighting for?
Nikolias has just lost everything: his parents, his home, and any sense of peace. Sent back to the town his family left years ago to live with his prejudiced and controlling uncle, who wants nothing to do with anything—or anyone—not human, he’s trying to do everything in his power to get out quickly.
But then he meets Derek again, and all of his plans vanish in the soft, yearning flecks of gold in Derek’s green-hazel eyes. He’s drawn to Derek in a way that’s impossible to deny, and he thinks Derek feels the same way, despite the danger their relationship holds for him.
As Moonshadow's politics turn deadly, Derek and Nikolai are caught in the crossfire of a war that had started long before they were born, and their bond becomes a threat and a lifeline that neither can afford to sever.
Because the heart wants what it wants….
And it never asks permission.

Chapter 1
“Stop being a child, Kore!”
“What’s childish about going to work?”
Someone in the room groaned, probably one of his uncles who knew that was the last thing their sister wanted to hear from her youngest daughter.
Derek sighed and stopped three steps from the open doorway. He was ready to go, on time as ordered, but it seemed like they wouldn’t be leaving on time.
He straightened his spine, affecting a better posture to avoid the lecture about it, and took the final three steps into the formal dining room where most of the pack was still loitering after breakfast.
Kore was seated at the table, not even pretending to be affected by their mother’s screaming. She was only a year older than Derek, but she carried herself like she was at least twice that age, and often infuriated their parents just by refusing to fall into what they called the Moonshadow way.
She had a towel around her shoulders, her short hair curling from the dampness, and her eyes as bright and sharp as always. There were circles under her eyes from lack of sleep, but she looked happy enough, which meant that she and their mother had been at it for a while.
And likely would be for a while yet.
His mother, Sorelia, stood tall, tense, and dressed for the day in a cream blouse that likely cost the same as someone’s monthly rent; her skirt was pressed and equally expensive. His mother had always been impeccably dressed in the finest Moonshadow Pack money could afford.
She required that of her children, too, so Kore’s transgression of buying a pair of sneakers that were on sale at the beginning of the summer had started a three-month battle of wills.. Kore had gone on strike after the knock-down, drag-out screaming match back in May. Committing to paying back what she’s spent on the shoes to her allowance account and not accepting another cent from their parents, other than what was required by Council law: food, shelter, and basic clothing.
The pack had started a secret betting pool. The odds were stacked against Kore, given that she was a beta and their mother was the alpha of the Fey Shores branch of the Moonshadow Pack. But Derek had allocated exactly fifty-three dollars from random birthday gifts and payments for odd jobs to place his bet on Kore because she had inherited all of their mother’s stubbornness and none of her emotional volatility. His aunt would be collecting it on his behalf, as she had started to do after the last time his brothers found out he had some money.
“Good morning,” Derek greeted softly, not expecting an answer.
Sorelia didn’t even glance at him.
Kore turned to him, beaming. “Morning, Der’! How is my favorite little brother today?”
He smiled a little. Kore was the only one who called him that. He liked it more than his full name, even though their parents hated it. It made him feel closer to her.
“I’m your only little brother, Kore.”
She shrugged. “Tomato Tomato. Today’s the day! Excited?”
Derek held back a grimace. “Prepared.”
She chuckled wryly. “Fair enough.”
Kore stood and stretched with a sigh. “I’m glad I got to see you before I had to get going. It’s pouring out there, so don’t forget your umbrella.”
She rose from her seat, but their mother blocked her path, looming over Kore’s much smaller frame.
Kore didn’t even flinch.
She checked her watch and looked back at their mother. “Something to say, Alpha Sorelia?”
Their mother bristled at the address. The fury, frustration, and begrudging respect bloomed in bright red spots on her cheeks. Derek edged around the room, waiting for the blowup. Their mother always said she wanted a close relationship with her children, but she was more likely to shout them down for a differing opinion than support them.
Kore was the only one with an outwardly differing opinion, and Derek toed the line given that his mother could snap his neck with a flick of her wrist. She had never outright said she would, but she’d raised her hand enough to others that he had no doubts that she would if pushed enough.
His survival was more important to him than his pride or dignity.
“Derek is starting mandatory. It isn’t feasible for you to all ride with David.”
Kore snorted. “Who said anything about riding with David?”
Sorelia huffed, holding out Kore’s keys and her allowance card. “You are not allowed to walk to school.”
Kore glanced at the keys. “My legs work just fine. I like it. Makes my soccer training easier.”
She growled. “You are a Moonshadow. We don’t walk to school.”
“When I can afford a car, I’ll buy one.”
Sorelia slammed the keys down on the table. “I’ve had enough of your attitude. You will take these keys and behave, or so help me…”
“Are you putting me out?” Kore asked, her smile serene and a little mocking. “Or… sending me to New York, where I’ll gleefully take public transportation?”
Sorelia’s nostrils flared. “You’re going to drive your car.”
“I don’t own a car,” she said, narrowing her eyes. “You paid for it. You own it, right?”
“Take the keys, Kore.”
“No.”
They stared at each other. The air practically sparked between them. Sorelia’s eyes flashed. Her jaw trembled. Derek braced himself. The whole room held its breath, waiting for the moment Sorelia decided to compel Kore. As much as she said she didn’t want to be that kind of parent, she used her alpha compulsion against Kore more often than not. It made Derek sick every time..
Sorelia huffed. “I can see I can’t reason with you. Fine. Buy your cheap nonsense, but do not further embarrass me by walking to school.”
Kore cocked an eyebrow. “And what's the catch?”
“There is no catch,” Sorelia said. “You’ve proven your point.”
Kore scoffed and plucked the keys from the table. “I meant what I said. When I can afford it without your help, I will buy my own car and insurance.” She tilted her head to the allowance card. “That, you can keep. No need to leave the door open for another one of these friendly chats.”
Sorelia snarled, but Kore turned and walked towards the stairs, winking at him as she passed, leaving Sorelia shaking with impotent anger. She whirled on Derek. Derek went absolutely still. His heart raced, pumping adrenaline through him. She looked him over, searching for something she didn’t like about the outfit.
Sorelia had put it together and made him try it on all together in the store before she bought it, from the plain brown belt at his waist to the shiny, leather brown dress shoes.
He hated every piece of it. She set her jaw, clearly more frustrated that there was nothing out of place to yell about. He’d even slicked his curls the way she liked, yet there was still that barely restrained disappointment in her eyes.
She grabbed her purse. He slid aside as she headed toward the garage and followed, maintaining perfect posture and absolute silence.
At least he won the bet.

When I Disappeared, He Regretted It
The moment the screen lit up, my entire world came crashing down.
The woman on the bed was Calista - that girl who grew up with us since we were kids. And that hand caressing her skin was wearing the wedding ring I had personally put on Matteo's finger.
"I've missed you so much..."
"You drive me crazy, baby..."
Those sweet words I knew so well completely destroyed me.
Everyone said we were the perfect couple, but who knew this marriage was built on nothing but lies?
Since he's so good at acting, I guess it's time I gave him a show of my own. I'm going to make sure everyone sees what this "perfect husband" really is...
He Thought I'd Never Leave
When he said he was being bullied, I believed him. When he kissed me on that rooftop, I thought he felt the same. When he asked me to transfer schools with him, I said yes without hesitation.
Then I heard him bragging to his friends: "She'd save her first time for me. Hell, she'd still be thinking of me on her wedding night."
The bullying was staged. The kiss meant nothing. He just wanted me gone—so his new girl could feel more comfortable.
He thought I'd beg. He thought I'd cry. He thought I'd never actually leave.
I left the country.
And ran straight into his stepbrother.
I Died While They Threw Her a Party
Their real daughter came home. She'd only been back two years. That's all it took to erase twenty-four.
When kidnappers grabbed us, I used my body as a shield. They beat me until something inside me ruptured. I was dying from internal bleeding, but no one could tell.
My parents wouldn't even look at me. "This is your fault! None of this would've happened if it weren't for you!"
"Get downstairs and apologize to your sister. If you can't, pack your things and get out."
They threw her a party at a downtown hotel while I died alone in my room.
I thought they'd be relieved. Maybe even glad. I thought they'd just move on like I never existed.
But when they finally learned the truth, they fell apart.
Bury Me in His Regret
The kidnapper pressed the gun to my temple and asked, "Choose your wife or your sister-in-law?"
Zachary didn't hesitate. "Let Valerie go," he said.
He actually chose to save his sister-in-law! In that moment, even the baby in my belly seemed to stop kicking.
Later, they locked me in the basement. Drugs to delay labor were pumped into my veins over and over. Zachary wanted to save the "firstborn son" status for his sister-in-law's child.
When warm blood finally soaked through my skirt, I dialed the number I knew by heart with shaking hands.
"Zachary," I whispered into the phone, "our child... can't wait any longer."
The Kidney That Killed Me
A few months ago, my sister was hospitalized with kidney failure. The doctor said she needed a transplant. My family's first thought was me—the backup daughter they'd kept around all these years.
When my husband Allen took my hand with tears in his eyes and said, "Only you can save her," I agreed without hesitation.
When the doctor explained the surgical risks and potential complications, I smiled and nodded my understanding.
My parents said I'd finally learned what sisterly love meant.
Even Allen, who'd always been cold to me, held my hand gently and said, "The surgery's safe. You're so healthy, nothing will go wrong. When you recover, I'll take you to Hawaii."
But they don't know that no matter how the surgery goes, I won't be around to celebrate.
Because I just got my own test results—I have terminal brain cancer. I'm going to die anyway.
After the Affair: Falling into a Billionaire's Arms
From first crush to wedding vows, George Capulet and I had been inseparable. But in our seventh year of marriage, he began an affair with his secretary.
On my birthday, he took her on vacation. On our anniversary, he brought her to our home and made love to her in our bed...
Heartbroken, I tricked him into signing divorce papers.
George remained unconcerned, convinced I would never leave him.
His deceptions continued until the day the divorce was finalized. I threw the papers in his face: "George Capulet, from this moment on, get out of my life!"
Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.
When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.
"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."
Alpha Nicholas's Little Mate
What? No—wait… oh Moon Goddess, no.
Please tell me you're joking, Lex.
But she's not. I can feel her excitement bubbling under my skin, while all I feel is dread.
We turn the corner, and the scent hits me like a punch to the chest—cinnamon and something impossibly warm. My eyes scan the room until they land on him. Tall. Commanding. Beautiful.
And then, just as quickly… he sees me.
His expression twists.
"Fuck no."
He turns—and runs.
My mate sees me and runs.

The Human Among Wolves
My stomach twisted, but he wasn’t finished.
"You're just a pathetic little human," Zayn said, his words deliberate, each one hitting like a slap. "Spreading your legs for the first guy who bothers to notice you."
Heat rushed to my face, burning with humiliation. My chest ached — not from his words alone, but from the sick realization that I had trusted him. That I had let myself believe he was different.
I was so, so stupid.

Oops, Wrong Girl to Bully
My back hit the desk. Pain exploded through my skull.
"Girls like you don't get to dream about guys like Kai." Bella's breath was hot on my face. "You don't get to write pathetic love letters."
She shoved me again. Harder.
"Maybe if you weren't such a desperate little—"
I fell. My head cracked against the corner.
Warmth trickled down my neck. Blood.
Their laughter turned to gasps.
The door slammed.
I tried to stand. Couldn't. The room was spinning, fading to black.
Someone... please...
