Introduction

Laura Jean was never just a ballerina.
She was the paycheck. The perfect daughter. The girl whose bruised feet and forced smiles kept her family afloat… until one bad accident shattered everything.
Six months in a coma cost Laura more than her career. When she wakes up, her boyfriend has moved on with her best friend who stole her spotlight , and her own parents care more about the money she can no longer bring in than the daughter they almost lost.
Returning to Westbridge University was supposed to be her comeback.
Instead, it’s a battlefield. The Ballet Club no longer wants the broken prima ballerina, and no one is willing to partner with a girl they think is one bad fall away from quitting for good.
No one except Killian Vance. Hockey captain. Campus golden boy. Certified playboy.
The kind of guy who leaves destruction in his wake with a smile on his face.
Killian needs one thing to save his NCAA future: passing grades. Laura needs one thing to reclaim the stage: a partner.
So they make a deal. Three months of dance rehearsals. Three months of fake dating.
Three months of pretending not to want each other. But somewhere between late-night practices, jealous exes, and the pressure to prove everyone wrong, the line between fake and real starts to blur.
And for Laura, falling for Killian might be even more dangerous than the accident that nearly destroyed her.

Chapter 1

LAURA POV

I hate my life, not in the dramatic, throw-my-phone-across-the-room kind of way, but in a genuinely deep, soul-crushing way that makes me wonder how everything managed to fall apart so completely while I was unconscious.

Because apparently, waking up from a six-month coma isn’t the miracle everyone makes it out to be, especially when opening your eyes only means being forced to watch your entire life fall apart while realizing there is nothing you can do to stop it.

The beeping machines in the hospital were easier to survive than this because at least they were honest, unlike the betrayal I have had to witness these past few weeks.

My ex-boyfriend is currently dating my former best friend, the same girl who stole my spotlight while I was lying unconscious, while the Ballet Club replaced me without giving me a chance to recover, and my own parents look at my medical bills the same way people look at funeral costs, as if I am expensive, as if I am a burden they would rather not have to carry.

Listening to them argue has been worse than any nightmare, and honestly, I would rather be chased by a psychopath with a knife than stand in this house listening to my parents discuss my future as though I am not even standing here.

The worst part is that they don’t even say these things to my face, because that would require them to actually look at me.

Instead, they talk around me and over me, like I’m some cracked vase sitting in the corner of the room collecting dust, or some lifeless mannequin standing right in front of them.

“Her therapy alone costs thousands.”

My mother’s sharp voice slices through the kitchen walls while I stand frozen halfway down the staircase, my fingers tightening around the cup in my hands as she continues.

“She can barely get through one rehearsal without limping, Daniel.”

“We don’t know that yet,” my father mutters, but there is no confidence in his voice, and it doesn’t sound like he believes in me as much as it sounds like he is simply too tired to argue.

“You saw her last appointment,” Mom snaps. “The doctor practically said her career is hanging by a thread.”

A thread, that’s exactly what my life feels like now, thin and fragile, hanging by something so small that one wrong move could send everything I have left unraveling.

I should walk away, go upstairs, close my bedroom door, and pretend I didn’t hear this conversation for what feels like the hundredth time, but then my mother says the one thing that finally glues my feet to the floor.

“How are we supposed to maintain this lifestyle if she can’t dance anymore?”

My stomach twists so violently that I feel nauseous, because she doesn’t ask how Laura is coping, or whether her daughter is scared, or whether the accident still haunts me when I close my eyes, and she certainly doesn’t say thank God our daughter survived.

They never ask those things.

It is always about money.

Always.

Because ballet wasn’t just my dream; it was theirs too, a ticket to riches through sponsorships, investors, donations from alumni who loved parading around the university prodigy, private performances, and future contracts that apparently mattered more than the daughter who was lying unconscious in a hospital bed.

I wasn’t a daughter.

I was an investment they had birthed.

“She’ll recover,” Dad finally says weakly. “And we’ll have all that again.”

“And if she doesn’t?” Mom fires back instantly. “What then? We already drained our savings during the coma.”

My stomach tightens at the way she says the word coma, as if it personally inconvenienced her, as if I chose to spend six months unconscious just to ruin everything she had worked for.

“She lost the Juilliard opportunity, the sponsors pulled out, and even the academy board stopped calling,” my mother says, her voice shaking with frustration. “Everything we worked for is fucked.”

Everything we worked for.

Not everything I lost.

A bitter laugh almost escapes me, because apparently waking up was my biggest mistake.

The floor creaks beneath my foot, and both of them suddenly go silent.

For one horrible second, I think maybe they’ll look guilty, maybe ashamed that I heard everything they said, but instead my mother’s eyes flick toward me with irritation and something that looks dangerously close to disgust.

“Oh,” she says flatly. “You’re here.”

I stare at her, my chest hurting so badly that breathing suddenly feels like work, while my father refuses to meet my eyes.

“Laura…” he starts.

“Sorry to interrupt you,” I whisper, but my voice cracks immediately, betraying me in the worst possible way.

Pathetic.

Weak.

Broken.

Exactly what everyone thinks I am now.

“You know,” I say softly, forcing myself to hold her gaze, “most parents are happy when their kid survives a near-death experience.”

My mother folds her arms defensively. “Don’t start being dramatic.”

Dramatic.

I almost laugh because six months ago, she cried when I came second at nationals, but now she can barely pretend to care that I almost died.

“I’m being truthful,” she continues coldly. “Someone in this family has to be.”

Something inside me cracks quietly, the kind of crack you know you will never be able to put back together, and I tighten my grip around the ceramic cup until the heat burns against my palms because at least that pain reminds me that I am still capable of feeling something.

“I almost died,” I whisper.

Neither of them answers, and they simply stare at me as though I am the one being unreasonable.

My father finally sighs and rubs a hand down his face before saying, “Laura, your mother is just stressed.”

I blink at him slowly because stressed is the word he chooses, not heartbroken, not terrified, not grateful, just stressed, as though I decided to get into an accident that nearly took my life simply to make things difficult for them.

“You think this is hard for you?” my mother asks sharply. “Do you have any idea what we sacrificed for your career?”

My career.

It is always about my career and never about me, always about ballet and what I could give them, what I could earn, what I could accomplish, and what my success could provide.

I laugh, and the sound that comes out of me is broken and ugly because the answer is yes, I know exactly what they sacrificed.

Everything except their humanity.

“You know what’s funny?” I murmur. “When I woke up, I thought the worst thing I’d hear was that I might never dance the same again.”

My throat burns as I fight to keep my voice steady.

“But apparently, the real tragedy is that your retirement plan got hit by a car.”

“Laura!” Dad snaps.

Too late.

The tears are already coming, hot and humiliating, and I hate them for seeing me cry, but I hate myself even more for letting them see just how much their words hurt.

My mother’s expression hardens instead of softening, and the words that leave her mouth are the final confirmation that I have been desperately trying not to accept.

“Watch your tone.”

There it is, the final nail in the coffin.

Not are you okay, not we’re sorry, not we’re glad you’re alive.

Watch your tone.

I stare at the woman standing across from me and try, really try, to remember the mother who used to braid my hair before competitions, the woman who kissed my forehead and called me her star, the woman who used to tell me that there was nothing in the world she wouldn’t do for me.

I can’t find her anymore.

Maybe she stopped existing the moment I stopped being profitable.

“You wanna know the worst part?” I ask quietly.

Neither of them speaks.

“You didn’t even wait for me to heal before deciding I was worthless.”

Dad flinches, but Mom doesn’t even blink. “Don’t put words in our mouths,” she says coldly.

“Then what should I call this?” My voice rises for the first time as everything I have been holding inside finally begins spilling out. “Because from where I’m standing, it sounds a lot like you’re mourning my bank account more than the fact that I almost fucking died!”

The room falls silent, and my chest heaves violently as years of pressure finally crack open inside me.

“I gave you everything,” I whisper shakily. “Every recital, every competition, every injury, every panic attack before performances, and every time I wanted to quit but forced myself to keep going because you told me that sacrifice was necessary.”

A tear slides down my cheek, but I don’t bother wiping it away.

“I was sixteen, taking painkillers just to get through rehearsals.”

My father finally looks guilty, but my mother only looks angry that I have said it out loud.

“I danced until my toenails bled because you told me sacrifice was necessary,” I continue, my breathing becoming uneven as I stare at her. “And the second I couldn’t do it anymore…”

I swallow hard, feeling my throat tighten around the words I have been too afraid to say.

“You stopped loving me.”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” my mother says instantly, her voice defensive, as though even she cannot bear to hear the truth in my words.

I shake my head slowly, tears blurring my vision as I look at the woman who used to be my entire world.

“No,” I whisper. “What’s ridiculous is that I actually thought waking up meant I still had a family.”

I can’t stand being in this house another second, so I set the untouched cup down with shaking hands and turn toward the stairs.

“Laura…”

I stop when I hear my father’s voice, but I don’t look back because if I do, I might break completely, and I have a feeling nobody in this house would bother putting me back together
