"Brian, look again. Really look." Emma’s voice trembled as she shoved the broken piece of wood into his chest. Her hands were shaking—knuckles scraped raw, eyes burning with a grief too deep to contain. “Whose name do you see on that grave?”
Brian kicked over the rusted chair beside him, his movements sharp, unhinged. His bloodshot eyes flared with irritation.
“Jesus, Emma! Are we still on this? You’re acting like some twisted ghost hunter. Can’t you just let it go? She was just a girl—eighteen, for God’s sake!”
A bitter laugh slipped from her lips, hollow and soaked in pain. Her voice cracked as she took a slow, deliberate step toward him.
“She wasn’t just a girl.” She stared him down, tears spilling over as her chest rose and fell with every breath of fury. “She was our daughter. And you—” her voice broke into a whisper, “you let her die like trash. You threw Elara away like she meant nothing.”
