Introduction

Evelyn was a local gangster, living her life on her own terms with what she believed to be her perfect boyfriend until he stabbed her in the back.
They had successfully completed a dangerous mission: stealing from the Madison event, hosted by the most feared mafia family in the city. However, during the mission, her boyfriend abandoned her, leaving her to face the consequences alone. She was captured by the infamous Arthur Madison, a ruthless and emotionless mafia lord.
Now, Evelyn must find a way to save her life. What will happen when she discovers that Arthur is obsessed with her without her knowledge? What dark secrets will she uncover about him? Will Evelyn manage to survive, or will Arthur lead her to an early grave? And what could be his true motives for being so fixated on her?

Chapter 1

Evelyn's Point of View

“Shit...” I cursed, glancing behind me; four men were running after me, the gunshots echoing inside the quiet parking lot. My team was supposed to be here at this moment. If they don't arrive in the next few minutes, I am totally done for. Stealing at Arthur Madison’s event was like applying for a date of death, and I can't afford to get caught. He'd kill me and feed my head to the lions.

I shifted my weight and peeked at the guys coming at me with their guns in hand, firing bullets at me. I squeezed the trigger, unleashing a barrage of bullets at them from both of my guns, and two of them fell to the ground.

I rested my head against the wall, trying to calm my ragged breath. Today, I was either going to die or survive.

A sigh of relief escaped my lips as Jax pulled the car a few steps away from me. Just when I thought I was going to lose my life, he arrived.

I rushed over to the car, grasped the door handle, and pulled, but it wouldn't open.

“Jax, open this damn door,” I said, my jaws clenched. The windows rolled down, revealing Jax and Amanda sitting on the other seat.

“What makes you think I'd open the door for you?” Jax's words made my eyebrows pull together. What the heck did he mean? My life was in danger, and he thought this was the best time to ask me this messed up question.

“What the fuck do you mean, Jax?” I questioned, my nostrils flaring. “Just unlock this damn door.”

“Avelyn, it's over between us, and I'm not going anywhere with you!! Amanda is now my new girlfriend, and you are going to be left here to die,” Jax said, causing me to laugh at his words. He must be joking. He can't be serious at this moment.

“You must be joking, right?” A lump formed in my throat. He can't just break up with me, especially right now. We just accomplished a very dangerous mission, and we succeeded. He can't turn his back on me when he has all the cars that we've stolen. He can't ditch me now. He can't leave me for my best friend.

“Evelyn, stop acting dumb, okay?” Amanda's voice dripped with sarcasm. “Jax and I have been dating for months, and I'm expecting his child. He was only with you so we could finish this heist, get the money, and finally leave you. We are going to start our life afresh far from here.”

My eyes widened, my stomach churning as Amanda's words sank in. She was supposed to be my best friend. She can't do this to me, especially when we succeeded in this dangerous mission. This was supposed to be our last mission, and we'd become the richest people in this city. That was our plan, and Jax and I have been dating for two years. He can't turn his back on me now.

“Jax, you can't do this to me!” My voice trembled, a sharp pang cutting through my chest. I loved him, I planned a future with him. He can't leave me now, please. “We've been through a lot together. You can't leave me now, please.” I couldn't believe that I was begging him right now, but I loved him. I don't care about money as long as he chooses me.

“Stop embarrassing yourself, Evelyn. I never loved you. I was just with you because I wanted money, and now that I have it, I don't need you anymore,” Jax's words were like a sharp dagger in my chest. I swallowed painfully hard.

“Anyways, who would want to be with an outdated woman like you? You didn't even allow me to taste this little pussy of yours, but now I'd fuck anytime I want. Amanda doesn't wait for marriage.” Hot tears streamed down my face as his words sank in. He can't be doing this to me after everything I've done for him.

Amanda waved at me, a smirk stretching on her lips, and just like that, Jax drove away in the car, leaving me frozen on the ground, hot tears streaming down my face.

The guns I held in my hands fell to the ground with a loud thud.

I bit my lips, trying hard to stifle my sobs, but I couldn't control the hollow ache spreading through my chest.

It'd be nice if someone would come here and tell me that this was a joke, the most cruel joke. Jax can't betray me like this and leave me in such hot water all alone. He must have turned everyone against me, and at this point, I had no way to run. I was as good as dead.

Why did I trust him so much? I was such a fool. I shouldn't have trusted him at all, and now I was left all alone.

I won't let them get away with this. They've messed with the wrong person. I'd turn their life into a living hell. They can't be happily together after ruining my life and leaving me in such a tight spot.

I had to get away from this place as soon as possible. I can't get caught.

I darted around the parking lot, now empty with no cars, leaving only the walls and the deafening silence.

Before I could even make my escape plan, black cars swarmed the parking area. There was no escape for me, but the brave side of me didn't want to lose without a fight.

My eyes scanned the area, searching for a way to escape. Without a second thought, I sprinted between the cars, making my way out of the parking lot without turning back. As foolish as that decision was, I just had to try. It was better to try than to fail without even trying.

I halted in my steps as the sound of the gun echoed in the quiet area, a sharp pain cutting through my leg as the bullet pierced my skin. I let out a scream as I collapsed on the ground, blood dripping out.

"Get downstairs and apologize to your sister. If you can't, pack your things and get out."

Even Allen, who'd always been cold to me, held my hand gently and said, "The surgery's safe. You're so healthy, nothing will go wrong. When you recover, I'll take you to Hawaii."

But they don't know that no matter how the surgery goes, I won't be around to celebrate.

Because I just got my own test results—I have terminal brain cancer. I'm going to die anyway.

"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"

George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"

"I'm afraid that's impossible."

Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."
