Introduction

When her twin brother elopes, Elysia Sterling disguises herself as him to save her noble family from ruin and delay her forced marriage to the arrogant Prince Aleander. She infiltrates the brutal, all-male Drakonys Academy, a prestigious crucible for warrior dragon tamers. Unlike her peers who use raw force, Elysia possesses a rare, innate empathy that allows her to bond with the most dangerous, broken dragons. Her natural talent immediately draws the suspicion of Aidan Gideon, the ruthless academy Valedictorian and her assigned Senior Mentor. As Aidan pushes her to her physical limits, an intense, confusing attraction grows between them, threatening her disguise. The stakes skyrocket during the end-of-semester exam when Elysia touches the legendary Matriarch's Orb. Recognizing her pure potential, the ancient artifact seals itself inside her, granting her the forbidden power to shift into the Mother Dragon and absorb other beasts into pocket orbs to protect them. Navigating deadly political conspiracies, lethal training, and a burning, forbidden romance with Aidan, Elysia must protect the dragon race before her true identity is exposed to the entire kingdom.

Chapter 1

The melted crimson wax of the royal seal looked like a fresh bloodstain on the pale marble of my vanity.

I stared at the wedding invitation, my fingers hovering just over the heavy, cream-colored parchment without actually touching it. The gold crest of Prince Aleander gleamed under the flickering candlelight—a soaring dragon wrapping around a crown. It was a beautiful symbol, but to me, it was a brand. A life sentence. For as long as I could remember, Aleander had viewed me as nothing more than a glittering ornament to append to his future court. He didn't know my mind, my strength, or the raw, untamed empathy I kept hidden beneath my silk gowns. He only knew my lineage.

Shifting my gaze away from the suffocating piece of paper, I looked toward my twin brother’s unmade bed across the room. The heavy velvet sheets were violently rumpled, abandoned in desperate haste during the dead silence of the night. My heart squeezed painfully as I stepped closer, the soft fabric of my nightgown trailing against the stone floor.

On Desi's pillow lay a single piece of parchment. The ink was slightly smudged, written in my twin's characteristically erratic handwriting.

“Forgive me, El. I love her. Her father plans to send her away across the Eastern Sea by fortnight's end. I cannot let Lyra be sold to another man, and I cannot stay here to become the unfeeling monster the Academy wants me to be. I am not like our brothers, El. I don't have the stomach for the blood they require. Look after Mother's memory for me. I am so sorry.”

He was gone. Desi had fled into the dark night with Lyra, the diplomat’s daughter—my own childhood best friend. They had chosen exile over the separate prisons the kingdom had built for them. Lyra had been my sole confidante in a fortress dominated by the crushing weight of masculine ambition, where strict adherence to military excellence dictated every single breath.

A violent crash of heavy, iron-toed boots echoed down the long stone corridor outside, instantly shattering the morning silence. The glass panes of the East wing rattled in their iron frames.

My heart skipped a beat, then began to hammer furiously against my ribs.

My father. Lord Corin Sterling, the Imperial Advisor.

If he walked into this room right now and discovered that his youngest son—the prodigal twin who was supposed to enter the Drakonys Military Academy this very morning—had deserted his duty, the consequences would be catastrophic. The King would strip us of our noble titles, seize our sprawling ancestral lands, and demand reparations for the perceived insult. Worse still, my father would immediately offer me to Prince Aleander to salvage the family's standing, dragging me to the royal altar before the week was out.

“Desi!” a booming voice roared from behind the thick oak door, followed by a heavy, impatient fist pounding against the wood. “The vanguard's war dragons are already touching down in the lower courtyard! Move your lazy blood, boy! Your eldest brother is leading the convoy, and he will not wait another minute for a slow cadet!”

I didn't think. There was no time for logic, no time to weigh the sheer madness of what I was about to do. Instinct—the wild, untamed whisper that had guided my secret interactions with the estate's wild drakes since I was a child—took absolute control of my mind.

I threw myself across the room, dropping to my knees before the heavy iron-bound trunk at the foot of Desi's bed. With a harsh jerk, I threw open the lid. Inside lay my brother's freshly forged armor. It was crafted from dark, boiled leather and interlocking plates of blackened steel, meticulously tailored to fit his slender frame. Because we were twins, we shared the exact same height, the exact same sharp, elegant features inherited from our late mother, and the same striking, icy blue eyes.

My fingers trembled violently as I tore off my fine silk gown, leaving myself exposed to the freezing morning air filtering through the window. I grabbed the long, thick strips of linen bandages resting on Desi’s nightstand. Standing before the mirror, I began wrapping the fabric tightly around my chest. I pulled with all my strength, binding the knots so fiercely that air became a scarce commodity in my lungs. I watched in grim satisfaction as the tight bindings crushed my feminine curves, smoothing out my silhouette until I possessed the flat, lean torso of a young man.

Next came the clothes. I slipped into the coarse wool tunic, buckled the heavy leather greaves over my calves, and lifted the steel breastplate. The cold metal bit through my clothes, its sheer weight pressing down hard upon my shoulders, but it was nothing compared to the monumental weight of the lie I was about to live.

I fastened the leather pauldrons, hooked Desi’s personalized ceremonial dagger to my utility belt, and gathered my long, dark brown hair. With practiced efficiency, I twisted the locks tight, tucking them entirely beneath the heavy iron chainmail coif before sliding the dark leather helmet over my head. The cheekguards came forward, shadowing the softest parts of my face.

When I finally turned to look at the full-length mirror, Elysia Sterling no longer existed.

It was Desi staring back at me. A slightly paler, more ethereal version of my brother, perhaps, but the soft, yielding girl who had been groomed for a royal marriage had vanished. In her place stood a cadet whose icy blue eyes burned with a fierce, terrifying determination.

I wasn't just doing this to save my family from ruin, or to buy my brother time to escape across the border. I was going to prove something to this rigid world of men. My six older brothers were celebrated elites, scattered across the realm as legendary commanders and master tamers. They had always looked down on me, treating me like fragile porcelain. Even Prince Aleander spoke to me as if I lacked a spine. I was going to prove that a woman could understand the ancient, volatile souls of dragons better than any brute wielding a whip. I had exactly one semester—six grueling months—to survive the training grounds, reach the End-of-Term Orb Test, and secure a place of power before the Crown discovered my true identity.

The heavy door flew open with a loud bang. Lord Corin Sterling stood on the threshold, his towering frame silhouetted against the dim torchlight of the corridor. His stern face was deeply lined by years of political warfare and unyielding ambition. His sharp eyes scanned the room, missing the chaotic state of Desi's bed, before locking squarely onto my armored figure.

“Finally,” my father grunted, his voice devoid of any warmth. “Do not dare disgrace our lineage today, boy. The Commandant's eldest son, Aidan Gideon, is already the valedictorian of the upper classes. He expects absolute perfection from the new intake. If you let him or anyone else outpace you, I will personally break your spirit before the academy can. Move out.”

I lowered my chin, deliberately altering the resonance of my vocal cords, channeling the deeper, slightly detached cadence my brother used when he was trying to sound brave.

“I won't let them outpace me, Father,” I said, my voice smooth and steady.

I strode past him without another word, my boots clicking loudly against the stone. My heart hammered violently against my bound ribs, but I didn't falter. Stepping out into the rain-slicked courtyard, the deafening roars of the waiting war dragons washed over me. The deadly game had officially begun.
