Chapter 1
Charlotte
I almost never arrive this late. Usually, I don't. I strongly believe in the motto that if you're late, you're wasting everyone's time. My mother taught me much better than that, I swear. I pull the blond hair that I had tied earlier out of the chain strap of my purse while sitting on the subway. Of course, I decided to wear long hair and a chain strap purse on a windy day. I wanted to look good. I want to make a good first impression. It's been a long time since I’ve even gotten an interview, and I really need this one to be successful.
"Go to school," everyone said. "You’ll make a lot of money," everyone said. Nobody told me that I would graduate from fashion school with $130,000 in debt. And fashion school? It turns out that just because I moved across the country to study at a prestigious fashion school doesn't mean there are prestigious jobs in fashion. However, I once got to showcase some pieces in a fashion show. So, I do have industry experience.
I tap my foot impatiently, looking at the next stop sign. I know it's mine, and I know it's close, but it's taking too long! I stand up as the train stops, pulling my hair to the side to keep it away from the chain. The last thing I need is to have to untangle it during my interview. This isn't the most exciting opportunity I could have hoped for, but being a personal assistant seems much better than laying bricks, which is probably what I'll have to do if I don't get this job for being late to the interview.
I could have done anything. I could have been an accountant, probably. I could have pulled myself together and studied something people actually needed. People don't need fashion, but I think they need their coffee orders on time, and I think I'm the right woman for the job. My heels click on the sidewalk as I rush out of the train car and up the stairs to the street.
I've never been to this side of town before, even though, honestly, I don't live that far. Living near the business district is like living near an industrial area. Sure, I’d know there’s a slaughterhouse, but I don’t know the layout or what they’re doing in the building. Investments mean nothing to me. Sure, I have a savings account, with what I can only assume is the worst interest rate on the market, but I have nothing to invest at the moment; in fact, I'm very behind on my electric bill.
"Anderson Holdings..." I whisper to myself, looking at the large letters on the tower. It's strange to think I've never heard of this company before, but I'm not a fool, I did my research, and it seems they have a small stake in everything. Beauty products? Backed by Anderson Holdings. Snack foods? Backed by Anderson Holdings. Electronics? Backed by Anderson Holdings. It's like they're a silent partner in almost everything you use. They even invest in competing brands. "Fifty-seventh floor, ask for Richard," I read on the palm of my hand before looking again at the large, intimidating sign. This is the first interview I've had in a long time. I can't mess this up.
I enter the building and am immediately greeted by the cold air conditioning, which contrasts with the heat outside. I walk to the reception desk, where an elegant woman greets me with a professional smile.
"Hello, I have an interview scheduled with Mr. Richard on the fifty-seventh floor," I say, trying to hide my nervousness.
She hands me a visitor's badge and directs me to the elevators. I thank her and walk over, feeling my heart race with each step. The elevator is luxurious, with mirrors on the walls and soft music playing in the background. I press the button for the fifty-seventh floor and watch the numbers rise on the digital panel.
As the elevator climbs, I remember all the sleepless nights I spent studying for exams, working on fashion projects, and juggling part-time jobs to pay the bills. All that dedication had to pay off. I needed it to pay off.
When the elevator doors open, I'm greeted by an elegant and minimalist environment. The reception on the floor is impeccable, with modern furniture and well-maintained plants. I walk to the secretary, who looks at me with a friendly smile.
"Hello, I'm Charlotte, I have an interview scheduled with Mr. Richard."
"Of course, Charlotte. Mr. Richard is expecting you. Please follow me," she says, standing up and leading me down a corridor.
We arrive at a conference room with a long glass table and comfortable chairs. Richard, a tall and well-dressed man, is sitting at the head of the table. He stands up and greets me with a firm handshake.
"Charlotte, it's a pleasure to meet you. Please, have a seat," he says, indicating a nearby chair.
I thank him and sit down, trying to stay calm. Richard begins to talk about the company, its values, and the importance of the role I'm about to take on. He asks some questions about my experience and skills, and I try to answer as best as I can, highlighting my strengths and determination.
"So, Charlotte, we have some more specific questions about the personal assistant position," Richard says, looking at a sheet of paper in front of him. "How do you handle high-pressure situations?"
"I believe I am quite organized and able to stay calm under pressure. During my time in fashion school, we often had tight deadlines and stressful situations, and I always managed to complete my tasks efficiently," I respond, trying to sound confident.
He nods, satisfied with my answer, and continues with the questions. I feel more at ease as the interview progresses, and we begin to discuss more specific details of the job. I discover that the personal assistant position involves not only administrative tasks but also organizing events and travel, which excites me.
After about an hour of conversation, Richard smiles and leans forward.
"Charlotte, I think you would fit in perfectly here at Anderson Holdings. We'll continue with the process and get in touch with you soon," he says, extending his hand.
I shake his hand, relieved and happy.
"Thank you very much for the opportunity, Richard. I look forward to hearing from you," I reply, standing up.
He escorts me to the exit, and as I ride down the elevator, I feel a wave of hope. Maybe this is the chance I’ve been waiting for to finally get my life on track. I leave the building with a smile on my face, determined to give my best and prove that I am the right person for the job.
As I leave the building, I take a deep breath and look around. The city seems different somehow, brighter, fuller of possibilities. I walk to a nearby coffee shop to celebrate with an iced coffee, something I rarely allow myself due to my tight budget. I sit by the window, watching the hustle and bustle of people and reflecting on the interview.
I think about what it would be like to work at Anderson Holdings, all the opportunities that could arise from this position. Being Richard Anderson's personal assistant is not just a chance to pay off my debts but also a gateway to a business world I never imagined was accessible. Who knows where this could lead?
While sipping my coffee, I grab my phone and send a message to my mother, telling her about the interview and how confident I felt. She has always been my biggest support, and I know she'll be happy to hear that everything went well.
Hours later, when I get home, I feel exhausted but optimistic. The prospect of a new beginning fills my heart with hope. I take one last look at my phone before going to sleep, anxiously awaiting a positive response from Anderson Holdings.
The days pass slowly, each one more anxious than the last. I keep sending resumes to other openings, but none seem as promising as Anderson Holdings. Finally, after a week of waiting, I receive an email from the company. My heart races when I see the sender.
"Congratulations, Charlotte! We are pleased to inform you that you have been selected for the personal assistant position at Anderson Holdings. Please contact us to schedule your first day of work."
I read the message several times, barely believing what I see. I rush to tell my mother, and together we celebrate the good news. I feel relieved, grateful, and above all, ready to start this new chapter of my life.
The following week, I walk back to the Anderson Holdings building, this time with a permanent badge in hand. As I enter the elevator, I feel more confident, ready to face the challenges ahead. I know the road ahead won't be easy, but I'm determined to give my best and make the most of this opportunity.

He Never Loved Me, Until I Left
I put away the divorce agreement with a wry smile.
When he and my son completely disappeared, he finally panicked.
Three months later .
He knelt down on the streets of Chicago in despair, begging me to remarry him.
My six-year-old son looked coldly at his biological father and said, "Get lost, you bad uncle! You don't deserve to be my dad!"
He Thought I'd Never Leave
When he said he was being bullied, I believed him. When he kissed me on that rooftop, I thought he felt the same. When he asked me to transfer schools with him, I said yes without hesitation.
Then I heard him bragging to his friends: "She'd save her first time for me. Hell, she'd still be thinking of me on her wedding night."
The bullying was staged. The kiss meant nothing. He just wanted me gone—so his new girl could feel more comfortable.
He thought I'd beg. He thought I'd cry. He thought I'd never actually leave.
I left the country.
And ran straight into his stepbrother.
Bury Me in His Regret
The kidnapper pressed the gun to my temple and asked, "Choose your wife or your sister-in-law?"
Zachary didn't hesitate. "Let Valerie go," he said.
He actually chose to save his sister-in-law! In that moment, even the baby in my belly seemed to stop kicking.
Later, they locked me in the basement. Drugs to delay labor were pumped into my veins over and over. Zachary wanted to save the "firstborn son" status for his sister-in-law's child.
When warm blood finally soaked through my skirt, I dialed the number I knew by heart with shaking hands.
"Zachary," I whispered into the phone, "our child... can't wait any longer."
After the Affair: Falling into a Billionaire's Arms

On my birthday, he took her on vacation. On our anniversary, he brought her to our home and made love to her in our bed...
Heartbroken, I tricked him into signing divorce papers.
George remained unconcerned, convinced I would never leave him.
His deceptions continued until the day the divorce was finalized. I threw the papers in his face: "George Capulet, from this moment on, get out of my life!"
Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.
When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.
"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."

"Fuck no."
He turns—and runs.

"Maybe if you weren't such a desperate little—"
I fell. My head cracked against the corner.
Warmth trickled down my neck. Blood.
Their laughter turned to gasps.
