Introduction

Typically, brides swap bouquets for good luck when wedding motorcades cross paths.
But in Liam’s Southern hometown, they had a twisted tradition: they swapped brides.

When our limousines met bumper-to-bumper, Kinsley leaned right past me. She pressed a lingering kiss to my fiancé’s cheek.
"Hope you don't mind, Rachel," she purred with innocent malice. "I’m stealing your groom."
The groomsmen howled like it was a frat party.
"Might as well take his honeymoon suite key too!" one shouted. "Liam wouldn't survive the wedding night without his childhood sweetheart anyway!"
They roared with laughter.

I sat frozen, my gaze locked on Liam. Just tell them to stop, I prayed. Just choose me. Just this once.
Instead, Liam gave me that familiar, condescending smile and patted my trembling hand.
"Don't pout, Rachel. You're the mature one, remember?" he coaxed. "It's just a local tradition. We can't break customs today."
Something inside me finally snapped. There was no anger left—just a bone-deep exhaustion.
The old me would have screamed and demanded respect. But today, I simply slipped my hand out from under his.

Without a word, I stepped out of the car. Ignoring Liam's sudden look of confusion, I walked straight past the cheering groomsmen toward the other limo.
Kian Porter—Liam’s college roommate—leaned against the hood. I reached out and smoothly looped my arm through his.
The laughter choked to a dead halt. In the deafening silence, I looked up at Kian with a steady smile.
"Let's get out of here, fiancé."
If Liam wanted to play by their twisted traditions, fine. This time, I was giving him exactly what he asked for.

Chapter 1

Typically, brides swap bouquets for good luck when wedding motorcades cross paths.

But in Liam’s Southern hometown, they had a twisted tradition: they swapped brides.

When our limousines met bumper-to-bumper, Kinsley leaned right past me. She pressed a lingering kiss to my fiancé’s cheek.

"Hope you don't mind, Rach," she purred with innocent malice.

"Hold up a second."

Liam’s voice cut through the heavy silence of the limo.

I froze mid-movement, breath catching for a foolish split second. For one wild, stupid second, I thought he’d finally clued in—remembered that I was the one in the white dress, the one he was supposed to be marrying today.

Instead, he leaned across the leather seats, his arm brushing right past my shoulder. He wasn't reaching for me.

He was grabbing the spare white rose boutonnière resting on the center console.

“Kinsley’s missing hers.” He stepped back onto the curb and walked away, no glance over his shoulder, no second thought.

The intersection light flipped green, and our respective motorcades peeled away in opposite directions. I slumped against the window. That was when I noticed it.

Tucked into the cup holder beside me was a bottle of grape juice. There was no condensation on the plastic. It was room temperature—exactly how I liked it.

I stared at the purple liquid, something tight unraveling in my chest. Someone actually paid attention.

For three long years, Liam had practically force-fed me iced Americanos. I hated bitter coffee, and I despised cold drinks. I’d reminded him a hundred times. He’d always kiss my forehead, say "My bad, babe," and hand me another iced Americano the very next week.

My phone vibrated against my thigh.

Liam: Don't make this a whole thing, Rach. It’s just a stupid town tradition.

Liam: You know she’s just a friend. Nothing is going on.

A friend. Right. I stared at the glowing screen, suddenly transported back to our senior year of college. I had just landed a killer PR internship in Atlanta. Kinsley had casually sighed about how hard job hunting was, and overnight, Liam had handed my hard-earned referral over to her.

"She’s struggling right now, Rachel. You’ll bounce back, you always do."

That was his favorite excuse. It applied to my career, my time, and eventually, the diamond engagement ring sitting on my left hand—the exact cut Kinsley had tried on first and discarded as "too flashy."

Buzz. A new message, this time from Kinsley.

It was a selfie. She was in the back of Liam’s limo, the tulle of her gown spilling over his lap. Her head rested perfectly on his shoulder. He was looking down at her, smiling.

Kinsley: Just following the rules of the South! You don't mind sharing for a bit, do you? 😘

Strangely enough, seeing it didn't hurt. The fiery indignation I expected was replaced by a cool, hollow calm.

Before I could even formulate a reply, Liam’s name popped up again, firing off texts in rapid succession.

Liam: Kins is freaking out a bit. It’s her first time doing this bride thing. Cut her some slack.

Liam: When you get to the altar with Kian, just stand there. No vows, no ring exchange, and absolutely no kissing.

Liam: Actually, maybe just wait in the bridal suite until the reception starts.

I let out a dry, humorless laugh, my thumbs flying across the keyboard.

Rachel: And what are you going to do?

The typing bubbles appeared immediately.

Liam: The whole town is here. I can't leave her standing up there alone, she'd be mortified.

Liam: You’re the mature one, Rach. Be the bigger person today.

The mature one. The polite way of saying the doormat.

I locked my screen, entirely done with the conversation. But Kinsley’s notifications pushed through anyway, desperate for my attention.

Kinsley: Ugh, Liam almost tore my earlobe off fixing my veil.

Kinsley: He’s still got two left feet and clumsy hands, just like when we were kids!

She was so desperate to mark her territory. Terrified I might forget the twenty years of history I couldn't compete with.

With a flick of my thumb, I swiped left on her name and hit Block Caller.

Silence. Beautiful, absolute silence.

The limo crunched to a halt on the gravel driveway of the country club. Through the tinted glass, I spotted the massive floral welcome sign at the entrance.

Except, the couple smiling on the poster wasn't me and Liam. It was me and Kian.

A bitter smile touched my lips. When Liam's mother insisted on preparing for this ridiculous "bride swap" tradition, she had demanded we shoot a backup set of photos with Kian, just to "honor the town's customs." I had fought it bitterly, crying until I was hoarse. Liam had just called me dramatic.

Who knew the backup photos would be the ones greeting the guests?

I looked down at the hand-me-down diamond on my left hand. It was half a size too big. It had always been too big.

Slowly, I slid it off my finger and dropped it into my purse.

Pushing the heavy car door open, I stepped out into the humid Southern air. Kian was waiting at the end of the walkway. He didn't rush me. He didn't ask if I was okay, or if I wanted to turn back. He just held out his hand.

I placed my bare hand in his.

"Let's go inside."

"We shouldn't keep the guests waiting."

"Eyes up here," he said.

My gaze snapped to his. He was smiling, causing my heart to skip a painful beat. Before I could respond, the music began, and my body instinctively reacted to the sweet melody.

The crowd gasped as Lex pulled me into a more intimate position, his hands roaming over my body in a seductive manner.

I soon found myself lost in his arms.

When the music finally stopped, my arms were wrapped around his neck, his hands resting on my back, our noses almost touching. He gazed deeply into my eyes.

The ballroom fell silent.

Was he about to kiss me?
